Frances Fox Piven, a 78-year-old professor at the City University of New York, has been receiving death threats from Glenn Beck followers after the Fox News pundit crusaded against her on his television show and on his conservative news site, The Blaze. Beck viewers emailed Piven saying "die you c---" and saying they hoped she gets cancer. "One shot, one kill!" one wrote on a forum on Beck's website. Beck has singled out Piven as an enemy of the U.S. because of her involvement in the "Cloward-Piven strategy," which Piven co-authored with her husband in a 1966 article in The Nation. Beck has called the article, which prescribed a mass movement by the unemployed to demand a guaranteed national income, a strategy to "intentionally collapse our economic system." He is now haranguing Piven for a more recent piece in The Nation calling for mass demonstrations by the unemployed. Piven says she has notified law enforcement about the threats. "I don’t want to give anybody the satisfaction of thinking they’ve got me trembling," she said.
