Violent clashes broke out Sunday afternoon at a protest in Berkeley’s Martin Luther King Jr. Civic Center Park. The “Rally Against Hate” began with a few thousand protesters marching peacefully, but the calm was quickly derailed when about 100 self-proclaimed anarchists carrying shields and covering their faces with bandanas attacked pro-Trump demonstrators who’d been in the area for a separate event. Pro-Trump groups were there to attend a “No to Marxism” rally, but it was canceled over safety concerns. Officials said at least five people described as pro-Trump demonstrators were attacked by the anarchist groups, who were reportedly seen ganging up on them and smacking some of them to the ground with shields and sticks. At least 14 people were arrested.
