So this does not sound like Sunday Funday for Joe Biden. The vice president will be headlining a fundraiser for Iowa Democrat Tom Harkin among a crowd of anti-war Democrats—and in everyone’s favorite first caucus state, Iowa, to boot. “That’s going to be a little sensitive,” said eastern Iowa Democrat Richard Machacek, who was a delegate for President Obama in 2008. In case you forgot (and who wouldn’t, 2008 was eons ago in the political world), Obama campaigned heavily in Iowa—and won—on an anti-war platform in Iowa, giving him early momentum. Longtime Democratic activist Paulee Lipsman insisted “people will be polite” during the steak picnic, but Harkin’s strong anti-war base will likely make things awkward, even if Syria never comes up.
