U.S. Millions Incite Tomorrow's Suicide Bombers
Disturbing new videos show that Fatah, the Palestinian Authority, supposedly committed to peace, uses aid from the U.S. and Europe to teach children that Israel is irredeemably evil and terrorism is heroic.
Incoming Secretary of State Hillary Clinton faces an alarming threat to any hope of a brokered Middle East peace. Some of the $40 million already committed to “moderate” Fatah president, Mahmoud Abbas, is feeding children a steady drumbeat of indoctrination to kill Israelis, with idealized images of virgins who await suicide bombers. Whistleblower has secured advanced copies of inflammatory videos collected from the West Bank by the private organization Palestinian Media Watch. They show what children in the schools are currently being taught in lessons and through T.V. shows. This brainwashing from “moderate” Fatah is little different from the propaganda put out by Hamas, which was condemned as a terrorist organization by the United States in 1995 and by the European Union in 2003.
In these videos, young children are taught to regard martyrdom in suicide bombing as a glorious aim.
The most upsetting 2008 clip might be that of uniformed elementary school children, enthusiastically reciting a poem for Palestinian Independence Day that ends: “I have let my land drink my blood, and I have loved the way of the shahada (martyrdom for Allah).”
In these videos, a 13-year-old child calls in and recited a poem praising Dalal Mughrabi, a terrorist who killed 12 children and 25 adults in a brutal 1978 bus hijacking. “We come to finish your journey,” the child says.

I'm sorry but this article has very a very anti-islamic sentiment.I myself a Christian feel this article not giving the full truth, especially since the videos seem to be cut. Another sentiment I want to express is that the Islamic faith has been fighting the same kind of atrocities brought on to them by the Western world as the Jews have brought on to them by Nazi's. I do not blame them for distrusting us, our interest is not in preserving their culture but rather destabilizing their governments and rounding "suspected" terrorists.
Right on, Posner. Glad I get to leave the first comment, that way it looks like I can read the future: I see the following comments: it's Israel's fault, it's the U.S. fault; if we give the Palestinians a homeland these problems will go away, if they don't go away it's the U.S. fault, and on and on. HEY, IT'S NOT OUR FAULT!
You bet somebody will defend this vile "education" .If the new adminmistration has any guts it will tell the PA no talks, nothing and not a cent more until you sack your Goebbels.
They're no more indoctrinated than us here in America. The only difference is that in the US we're brainwashed to sell our soul to capitalism and buy buy buy instead of kill kill kill
So does this suggest we should abandon the peace process? Or should we start supporting Hamas instead? The really disturbing thing is that we give money without trying to build legitimacy in the region. In fact we are currently spending billions in Iraq to undermine our legitimacy in Palestine. Hopefully our foreign policy will begin to be more far sighted and acknowledge that supporting the general welfare of humanity is the greatest weapon against tyranny. You can either respond to vile actions with a Treaty of Versailles or with a Marshal Plan. I prefer the consequences of the latter.

And the beat goes on ................
I can't believe anyone could form any sort of educated opinion from these tiny sound bites, easy to be taken out of context possibly for someone else's agenda.
The most "shocking" thing about it is that it is even given this biased coverage. The kids don't look so enthusiastic and it does not show them being "taught" this by their teacher.
Study of Hitler is covered in American schools - but does not make the children Nazis. It may even be an example of if we don't learn from the past we are doomed to repeat it. Who knows? Speculation can go on and on and on... News? This is certainly not.
Western money has been funding this and a variety of other terrorist activities for a couple of decades via oil payments. If we really want to make these videos irrelevant we need to do what tb1010 says and at the same time become independent of foreign oil (actually become independent of oil in general, China needs it all anyway) and replace our military bases with peace corp style installations to show our American face not our neocon face to the world.
Bush in defending his attack on an Arab nation said he was answering "to a higher father."
Elsewhere on this blog this week, a columnist praised Democratic politicians for blurring the lines between church and state
When you are doing that, you have no authority to tell people of a different religion in a different country that they may not use religious argumentation towards early military training.
These indoctrination videos, obviously, are despicable, and show a violation of the children's human rights. But the U.S. at this moment lacks credible authority for effectively demanding an end to them.

And we have Jesus Camp. We are on our way to making our very own soldiers of God. The religious, born-again, Jesus Taliban here are preparing for the final battle. See, we are not so different than the Islamic extremists after all. The single biggest threat on this planet is religion, period.
Great article Posner. Now... Let's see an article about religion in general and how it is destroying us from the inside out.
Good grief! Is anyone surprised that US dollars are not used the way the US was promised? The problem with foreign aid to foreign governments is that the US actually has no control over how those dollars are spent. I hope the Obama team makes some effort to direct foreign aid more towards those persons who will benefit most, namely the facelss, nameless masses of people all over the world who just want to make a good life for themselves and their families, but whose governments strangle every opportunity these people might have to do just that.
Written in the impeccable Posner style, the article causes me great despair that the human race is not evolving properly. To poison the minds of children with hatred and false history is such a crime against humanity. Wonder what Mohammed, Jesus or Buddhas would say.
Could everybody stop comparing the Palestinian sufferings to those of the Jews during the Holocaust!
I am completely in favor of a Palestinian homeland!
I think that they suffer incredibly, not only under Israel, but also in the hands of all the political manipulators that have (since the 6 days war) use them and abuse them for their own agenda.
BUT nothing that has happen to them or since to others can compare to the "Factories of Dead". Thousands lost their life during "a day" because of these factories efficiency.
So don't trivialize the Holocaust.
Try to learn about it, before you compare anything to it.
The shocking images of small children educated to hate should be more than bring cold to your spine. They will learn how to hate to such level that they will lose their humanity. I feel sorry for them! Again the Palestinians are been manipulated by others ambitions.
Sad very sad!
ONLY PEACE will make a difference into these people's life!
Lets try to work for it!
But these video should shame all of us, no matter what religion we believe or the color of our skin!
Context please? Are we really supposed to accept this as evidence of anything? You can go to a baseball game anywhere in the U.S. this summer and get footage of thousands of Americans singing reverently about "the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air", and then attach it to an article claiming that the people of the U.S. want to blow up the planet. And you'd probably scare a lot of people that were already scared to begin with. But that wouldn't make your story accurate or informative.
This is not only JOURNALISTICALLY UNETHICAL and UNSOUND, but also DANGEROUS.
Where is a shred of context-- or a thread of evidence?
By cutting and pasting random clips with an accompanying diatribe, you have merely substantiated presupposed oversimplifications and stereotypes on an issue that is already the single worst understood issue in this country.
Do better-- for the sake of everyone, those kids included.
I don't know if I find the article particularly biased against all muslims...because it's not about all muslims. It's about an issue going on within a relatively small group of people. Though many Americans don't understand that it is hard for the governments in these countries to crack down on these groups when they don't have the economic or military resources available. Hopefully the Obama administration can handle these issues more maturely and effectively than the Bush admin has, and try to influence people like those children in a positive way instead of reinforcing their hatred with war or an occupation.
I fear none but the true believer. Only the true believer will pull the pin, press the button or pull the trigger. And it doesn't really matter what their belief is, just that they believe that their way is the one and only way.
Straight up yellow. I've been reading The Daily Beast everyday and if you continue down this path will stop. Please don't turn this ridiculous.
Come on DB, you're never going to beat Slate if you publish stuff like this. Flat, one-sided and nothing new.
Gerald Posner's column is more than an eye opener. Some of the other poster's comments are so spot on. Simply, this should be ominous to anyone looking at it. Religion is used as a weapon to effect a terrorist act to effect some sort of an alleged political solution. Two wrongs do not make a right. How in the name of any god is something like this ever justifiable? It is clear that there is more love of death then of life. Obviously just giving U.S. monetary aid is not the way to go as this brainwashing has continued. It is unclear how old these vids are, so I assume they are relatively new. Conditions to the aid such must be clearly established such as stop producing these videos! President elect Obama and Secretary designate Clinton certainly have their work cut out for them. There needs to be a completely fresh approach to dealing with this.
incitement of "children" is to be expected. it recalls to mind "bugs bunny Vs. Japs". who will fight-man this "war" if not the children? "Brokered M-E peace" means nothing while gun barrels are pointed either way. Which, the kingdom? which, the serfdom? pick sides and somebodies dying. Israeli prop-ups cannot make up the bulwark of Us-mid east "intersubjectivity" or machinations? can it? this article is nothing if not a fact of perpetual war-time politics.
Not sure if it is a typo or what, but shahada does not mean "martyrdom for Allah." Not even close. Posner is thinking of the word (transliterated) shaheed.
