Right-Wing Becklash

"We’re not even three months into Obama’s term and already he’s screaming on air," Allahpundit wrote in one recent post. "How’s he going to deal with another three-plus years?"

Commenting on Beck's manic transitions between light comedy and frothing-at-the-mouth rage, Allahpundit added: "Either he’s acting or his mind is … highly nuanced."

"What the hell is going on at Fox News?" wrote David Frum, the former Bush official and conservative writer, in a recent column. He added, "There’s always been a market for this junk of course. Once that market was reached via mimeographed newsletters. Now it’s being tapped by Fox News."

Even Fox's own Shepard Smith seems to be uncomfortable with the new trend, frequently mocking Beck on live TV and referring to his show as a "fear chamber."

While not as specific in their targets, there have been some other eyebrow-raising commentaries from the right recently, calling for a more fair-minded approach. Few would ever accuse David Horowitz, author of books like Unholy Alliance: Radical Islam and the American Left, of shying away from strong language, but even he took up the cause of civility recently, penning a widely distributed column this month accusing conservatives of falling prey to "Obama derangement syndrome."

"Neither our support nor our opposition should be based on hysterical responses to policies that we just don't like," Horowtiz wrote. "Let’s leave that kind of behavior to the liberals who invented it."

Horowitz added that Obama should be given credit for pursuing policies in Afghanistan and Iraq largely supported by mainstream conservatives. His criticism that Obama can't catch a break from the right seemed to resonate with Fox News regular Bernard Goldberg, who recently got into a surprise tussle with Sean Hannity over whether Obama deserved praise for the Navy SEALs successful rescue operation in Somalia.

"If something bad happened here... I'll tell you who would have been leading the crusade against him—you," Goldberg told Hannity.

Politically, the right has always featured an uneasy alliance between social conservatives, cultural conservatives, national-security conservatives, and fiscal conservatives. Whether these rumblings of dissent about the state of the right-wing media are passing noise or a harbinger of a greater split, it's clear that Fox's latest gambit is not without its detractors.

"I just wish everyone would take a step back from this extremist brink," Johnson said. "It can't lead anywhere good. At best, it will bring the right-wing blogosphere into disrepute, and at the worst it could lead to violence if you encourage these real nuts out there."

Fox "News" has really gone loco recently with Beck and a general anything goes approach. I wonder if Homeland Security will infiltrate the mobs they want to provoke. And maybe fox News itself. One can hope.

A terrorist does not have to do bodily harm. They spew hate and divisive talk. Fox News needs to be entitled Foxs Opinion Network. I know of local fights over listening to Beck and Hannity. Do these terrorists realize the damage they do OR is it all about the monney?

Brahahaha what are you brain-dead? I guess only leftists like you and Cede Pink and Acorn are allowed to voice there opinions right? If we working people take time off to voice our opinions we are nuts right? Notice I said time off as we work for a living we don't just sit around like your protestors living off government grants waiting for a bus and marching orders form George Soros.

I don't recall ACORN getting any "mocking" from news media. In fact, it was Andrew Cuomo that called up and PAID ACORN cronies to protest in front of AIG execs. It was ACORN cronies that jammed a Chicago radio station so a conservative guest wouldn't go on air.

ACORN cronies are paid, they are there to intimidate - as they did w bankers to loan unqualified borrowers. Hence, why Freddie and Fannie got us into this mess.

Gee, Harley... remember Oklahoma City? Remember that nutjob in Pittsburgh last week? That's what I mean when I say I pray they don't harm anyone. Whenever you go stoking irrational fears and conspiracy theories, you run the risk of stirring up people who AREN'T particularly sane or safe.

I've got no problem with people organizing, protesting, and disagreeing all they want... it's the nature of democracy. The problem is when instead of protesting we get nutjobs talking about armed insurrection against a democratically elected government.

I am a hard working American and I am a free thinker.. does that make me a communist or a socialist?? because I educate myself and dont just take what is fed to me by mainstream media as fact??
so i guess anyone who doesn't agree with neo-con right wing agenda is a jobless tree hugging welfare taking communist..

o and it wasn't the loans that sank the economy, it was the packaging and selling and reselling and insuring them as low risk investments for YOUR pensions that sank it..

THEY (the government (big business and unions)) do not care about us hard working folks.. we are just resources.

Stop crying over spilled tea because your liar didn't win the election and a different liar did.. The money would be spent either way.. don't you kid yourself.

Last I heard, Code Pink and Acorn were not hardcore gun enthusiasts whose answer to everything is more guns and less civility. You may not like hippy leftists, but you don't need to worry about them pulling a gun on you or blowing up buildings. The right really needs to take a look at themselves. Religious extremism, militancy, nationalism, weapon fetishism; sounds a lot like the nuts that they are so afraid of in other countries. You fools won't be happy until the US looks like the Middle East.
And don't give me the Weather Underground of any of that sixties leftism shit, those guys have migrated to the right (ala David Horowitz), where extremist nuts are currently held in high esteem.

I'ts nice to see there still are some "true conservatives" out there. Since when did this "attack all critics at all costs and by any means possible" crowd get in charge of the GOP, out with them and in with the true conservatives (like the ones the greatest generation tell me about ;) "you know there was a time when the conservatives were the level headed adults in the room" some tell me.

Book burning, the guys with the guns make the rules and people who respond to "We are not supposed to torture people." by calling the guy stupid and ignorant are not true conservatives. Not by my grandparents standards.

I remember that time, ElLamer. I'm a Democrat, but back in the day, we could have good, honest discussions -- left and right together because what we all shared (and knew it) was love of country.

I can't get my mind around what has happened to the GOP, but it appears the "base" is getting ready to create another Timothy McVeigh, or a Timothy McVeigh group. They've been whipped up and enraged to the point of becoming irrational.

If anyone has been watching the National News these last two week, you sow our tragedy in Pittsburgh when three policemen were killed and two more were injured after responding to a domestic situation between a twentysomething son and him Mom over of all things the dog peeing in the house! How does this relate to this article? The guy was armed to the teeth and he believed in Conspiracy theories and that the government was taking his right to own guns away. Seeing the funeral for these upstanding officers and their families mourn makes it clear to me that these outrageous theatrical antics on Beck, Limbaugh etc. should be scrutinized and held responsible for the wake they leave in our society.

The left needs to marginalize the right in order to maintain Obama's lease on power. This translates into attacking every prominent figure who rises in opposition. You saw it with Palin, Limbaugh and now Beck. Unable to match their arguments, the left tries to delegitimize them by viciously ascribing to them the qualities sane people associate with the useful idiots on the left: hate, paranoia and plain weirdness. At the sane time they try to refloat such old shipwrecks as McCain, a tame RINO they like as long as he's not running for president. When he did, same old story. McCain was old, cranky, about to get cancer and die.

I'm on the left. I don't want to kill anything to do with traditional values, but I do want to kill the idea that anyone who doesn't kowtow to the religious right is somehow immoral or "bad".

However, the uproar over Obama wanting taxes on the very rich to return to the level they were at under Nixon is a lot of sound and fury and signifying nothing. The Glenn Becks of the world are swooning and fainting and having dizzy spells simply because they *lost* and no longer get their own way on every piece of legislation.

It's pathetic, and more than a little ridiculous.

America elected Obama, Venus. Deal with it. I know it's not pleasant... trust me, I wasn't terribly happy after America elected Bush in 2004. When you're on the losing side, the government is going to do things you... DUH, disagree with. That's the way it works. Ya have a problem, you make a better argument, you convince people, and you try again.

The second Obama wants to do away with elections, seize all private property, or eliminate all independent media, I'll be right there in the trenches with you... but if I can deal with (what I believed) were the gross injustices and violations of American values in the Reagan and Bush administrations, I'm sure you're mature enough to handle Obama's policies in a mature fashion. Or is that hoping for too much?

Beck is popular, gets good ratings, and actually says some pretty wise things-most of which come directly from the words of America's Founding Fathers. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, he's well studied, too! Nevertheless, liberals (and supposedly now Republicans) bash him like there's no tomorrow. Where was the outrage when he was on CNN? The "irresponsibility" I see doesn't emanate from the people who support and watch him (and they're not loonies, by the way, no matter how hard the liberal press tries to smear them), but the people who will do anything to solidify their own political agendas, especially those terrified that Beck may actually be echoing the things many Americans who haven't been brainwashed-and who may or may not have voted for Obama--are thinking. And perhaps Beck and the people who watch him do, indeed, have something to fear after reading the recent Department of Homeland Security "warning" to law enforcement officials about a rise in "rightwing extremist activity" which, of course, is meant to target conservatives and includes many who might disagree with the present administration and who support following the Constitution and responsible taxation (oh my God, now that's loony!). In fact the "report" even named "disgruntled war veterans" as a segment of the population who may go bonkers at any moment. And might I mention the government of Missouri who recently warned their state police that Christians, "sovereign citizens", those opposed to abortion, tax revisionists, and anti-illegal immigrant advocates are potential would-be terrorists. And thrown in with that lot are people with third party bumper stickers that mention candidates like Ron Paul. Now if that's not something to fear, I don't know what is-and it should terrify EVERY American, no matter whom they voted for.

Beck is insane. He is, in Bill O'Reilly's words, a "loon." I saw him a few times on CNN. I was outraged. I sent him at least 2 emails, while he was on CNN, expressing my outrage over his fringe point of view and his antics. It should be noted that Beck was actually on Headline News, and, if I'm not mistaken, on at an odd hour.
Further, Beck's antics are becoming more odd and wacky as time goes on. That's a big reason for the outrage now, compared to when he was on Headline News.
I saw Beck defending himself the other day by claiming that he spoke out against Bush and his deficit spending. I have to ask, did Beck call Bush a "socialist," a "marxist," a "communist," or a "fascist" as he is now calling Obama? Did Beck show Nazi imagery when he spoke about Bush? Last week, I heard Beck say that we have been marching towards fascism ever since Teddy Roosevelt. If Beck believes this, surely he would have been pulling these stunts when Bush was president.
I voted for Obama; I am still very glad that I did. However, I do not agree with everything he says or does. And, yes, I am concerned about the huge deficits being run up. At the same time, I don't really think anyone really knows how to fix the economic mess we are in, caused by the previous administration.
Even if I agreed 100% with Beck's message, I would not watch him; I would be outraged with him because he is, once again, a loon of the highest order. He is frankly one of the most embarrassing creeps you will ever see in the media.

OK. I read the report. I assume written by the same DHS employees who worked there before Obama.
The report states that right-wing extremist groups might try to recruit returned soldiers for their military skills. Not exactly targeting vets. Also the evidence for a rise in "rightwing extremist activity" is fairly substantial. If nothing else look to the run on guns and ammunition, and Chuck Norris' call for a "violent revolt".
ALSO there is a similar report on LEFT-WING Extremist activity. Only with the left-wingers the gov. is more concerned they will hack into the govt. computers and disrupt the system, not blow up a Federal building (Tim McVeigh anyone?)
And of course this should terrify everyone. But where was the fear and indignation when the govt. was doing it to the left for the last half decade (and longer, some would argue). Google Nicole Salazar arrest.
Gotta wonder just how sincere your statement really is.

So you are basically saying that the cops are changing their profiling to include some of the crazy white suburbanites??

I know it feels a little weird being on the other side of the fence, but you'll get used to it.. being a little tense and nervous when a cop pulls up next to you even though you've done nothing wrong, wondering if you should nod at him or if that will piss him off, wondering if you should just keep looking straight or will that make him think you are up to something. Should I keep my hands at 10 and 2 or 9 and 3?.. ok leave em both up there so he see's both hands.. don't make him nervous, or will he think I've something to hide with both hands on the wheel?? oh what to do what to do.. ok he's gone.. don't turn around and make sure.. he might be still be watching..

drfadhel -- maybe you should heed your own suggestions. Liberals should show confidence over bashing those you believe don't fit your liberal opinions, big government.

The bashing of opposition isn't necessary. Bring someone better to the dance next time.

Venus

Why do you assume that if someone thinks beck is a moron that he must be watching msnbc and he must be a liberal..
o
wait
that's what you've been programmed to believe.. and then once you've been programed, you gotta call everyone else brainwashed.

You are a victim of mind control

I really wish I could have a nice thought provoking conversation with some of my "conservative" coworkers.. but I can't, because they are all programed with the same line of bs. I say 'conservative" because most of them are blue collar "joe six-packs" that have no idea what they are actually supporting.. and that MY FRIEND is exactly why we have these shows.. because as the greedy get greedier, they thin the heard, so they have to resort to mind control to get votes. DO SOME RESEARCH.. LEARN SOME STUFF!

Wait a minute. Isn't this article about the RIGHT wing media criticizing Beck? I'd like to know what some of the more conservative readers think of that. I think it is interesting. I miss civil discourse between right and left that are based on educated, well-thought out opinions rather than knee-jerk reactions. Seems like some of the folks on the right are recognizing that. I believe that there are a lot of the people in the middle who are tired of the hysterics on both sides and would like to get back to a place where we can have a reasonable discussion of the issues. The U.S.A. has a lot on its plate right now and I think it is going to take the best and brightest brainpower of both the left and the right to get us out of this mess!

Thank you indeed, Itty.

I won't watch anyone who looks as if they are going to have a heart attack or can only yell as if that makes their point of view have more meaning.

I'm so sick of people labelling one party as intrinsically "evil" or "daft". The full range of the political spectrum is required for a functional democracy. One of the ways I avoid being a puppet for either party is to get my information from many sources both American and foreign.

Beck is very difficult to excuse. His antics aren't those of a journalist. They aren't those of a professional pundit. They don't foster civil discourse. In troubled times those are truly important things....

Scared of Gelnn Beck? LOL Really? Not in this lifetime and the majority of people look at him and laugh but hey go ahead and try to pass off your right nut jobbers as normal respeced people. People with guns and an inability to accept a black man watch Glenn Beck.....not the majority of people in this country who put Obama in office. Wait til the 2010 elections and see who the big losers are when people like Beck are their cheerleaders. LOLOLOL Afraid of a nut job? Really LOLL change parties man and earn some respect for your craft.

Benjamin, you might want to watch a few episodes of Glenn Beck. I thought "journalism" meant you reported the truth and it's intended message, not taking out of context.

You missed the point here: " Glenn Beck. Just this week, Johnson went after Beck for using violent imagery and rhetoric in a segment where he pretended to douse a guest with gasoline then threatened to set them on fire.."

It was water dude.

Um, you DO know the definition of "pretend," right? Actually, having read some of your posts, I'm not sure you're too solid on any "reality/fantasy" distinctions...

Tina Brown! enough botox...your eyebrows are crazy and you're writers are even crazier. I'm what some people would call a classic liberal...alas, they exist no more. Who are these new, angry voices? Such hypocrisy as well. I have watched Glenn Beck on CNN and I've seen him on Fox....he's still the same man....I don't think he's crazy, why is everyone saying that? He has passion and believes a certain way. Let's not shut down our rights to free speech people! The "right" is made up of really great hard working Americans as is the "left"....lets not let the fringe ruin it for everyone. And Tina? lay off the botox and rid the site of hard leaning leftist dribble....it's not doing anyone any good.

Beck is an irresponsible 'ranter', not a news person (as FOX purports) nor a journalist. He uses inflammatory rhetoric that incites irresponsible conduct, as demonstrated in the recent Bingham, NY "going postal" tragedy, in which Beck was named in the suicide note.

Is this REALLY who we want on the airwaves? Beck is part of the anti-intellectual movement that Palin stirred up last year and that Fox is fanning with its overt support of "tea parties".

Is Beck representative of who we have become or does he have air time on TV to attract the fringe? Regardless, I fear that we will not understand the incendiary impact of his ranting until we have more tragedies to which he is linked. THEN WHAT?

Well said. Glenn Beck offers his interesting take. It's wild anyone would want to bash Free Speech.

If the liberals don't like the views of Beck, they can turn the channel!

Equally, I don't like the rants of MSNBC'S Olberman - so I don't watch him. And he doesn't get under my skin!!

The majority who watches / listens to Glen Beck ( Limbaugh, Anne Coulter, Michael Savage, etc ).

1). WHITE.
2). Racists.
3). Conspiracy theorists.
4). Angry.
5). NRA Members.
6). Evangelicals.
7). Rural.
8). Homophobic.

I would bet that those who watch the Daily Show have a higher level of education than those who watch Glen Beck. I would bet that the information you get from Comedy Central is more informative than you get from FOX Noise......

Where were the "Tea Parties" when Bush was in office?.

I would agree with angry...but most of the conservatives I know personally are primarily terrified that a Dem president will raise their taxes.
They really just care about one thing...Tax cuts...

Other than their terror of Obama (or any Dem) they are loving people who want a better world...they just Believe the "right hype":
make the rich richer and that's how you'll be OK, even if you Actually get poorer!!!!

these people All make under $250,000/ year )...they're the working poor who are totally shafted by our current tax system (W2 forms making them little more than serfs)
but they believe if the "RICH" are taxed it somehow means them????

they are exactly the people who will benefit the most from Obama's administration....hopefully with time they'll realize that..I think that's exactly why the "right" has become so venomous

Again. Glenn Beck and his ilk (which includes Limbaugh, Malkin, and a majority of the Republican Party) are not conservatives. Conservatives believe in reigning in public spending, are against nation building and pre-emptive wars and support personal freedom through small government.

The Republican Party now is diametrically opposed to Conservative values, during the Bush years Republicans supported massive war spending, increasing Presidential power at the expense of personal liberty and became a cheerleader for regime change and pre-emptive war.

If anyone here Listen to Beck, Malkin, Coulter, Bolton, Limbaugh..................you are NOT conservative.

What happened to the old Republican Party? I miss some of those values (and I'm not talking about the family ones). How in the world did they become the party that restricted personal freedom? Hopefully some changes will be made. I am a Democrat, but have voted Republican in the past (a LONG time ago before the religious nuts high-jacked the party). We need two strong parties in this country.>

I voted Republican for years. It wasn't until Bush that I saw a major (a truly major) swing in the party that I could not support any longer. (And I had a gut feeling Bush was going to be bad... very bad.) I agree with many of the tenets of the Republican party. I just haven't witnessed them in use in decades.

The only real difference in spending between the parties is Republicans/bombs... Democrats/social spending.

To all you people who criticize the content of what he says...you really haven't listened to him. Beck is one of the most honest patriots we have. He has America and its' constitution first in his heart. He genuinely cares about your freedom and one day you will wake up to that fact.

It isn't the he doesn't bring up certain good things. The point is he goes too FAR. His rants about the state of this nation are beyond reality (not always, but often) and do more harm then good. (Both to the nation and to the GOP) And frankly not everyone wants the GOP to go down that road.
