Hats Off

From over-the-top otherworldly chapeaux to hippie-approved headdresses, headgear in all shapes and styles is this summer’s must-have accessory.

“A very, very good idea, hats—especially for queens,” Diana Vreeland, the iconic fashion editor wrote in her namesake biography, DV. Royalty aside, it seems one of this spring’s dominating sartorial trends is that of donning hats. In February, headgear was ever-present on Fashion Week runways (from neon fur concoctions at Michael Kors, to the return of the Prada-approved turban at Marc Jacobs); and perhaps it’s no coincidence that an epic exhibition honoring the accessory—the Stephen Jones-curated Hats: An Anthology, at which more than 400 examples are on view—comes to a close at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum at the end of this month.

From Aretha’s unforgettable custom-made inauguration cloche, to Lady Gaga’s intergalactic helmet, which the pop star recently wore during an appearance on Ellen, headgear is seemingly everywhere you turn. And, while a Chanel couture chapeau crafted from office paper might be beyond your budget (or your sartorial prowess), there are plenty of styles to choose from.
