What Hillary Can Teach Sarah Palin
A scene at the State Department Friday afternoon is one that the Alaska governor should watch on videotape.
As Sarah Palin’s furious claims of being victimized by David Letterman once again became catnip for cable hosts, a more elevated female narrative was being played out in Washington’s Foggy Bottom. On Friday afternoon, Melanne Verveer, Hillary Clinton’s former East Wing chief of staff and founder of the Vital Voices democracy initiative, was sworn in as ambassador at large for global women's issues by her friend of 25 years, the secretary of State.
Standing in the grand Benjamin Franklin Rooms amidst a sea of some 400 animated guests—most of them unostentatious women of stature and purpose, and many of them mentored at some time or other by Verveer or Hillary—I felt someone should pluck the combustible Alaskan away from whatever rancid talk show she was headed for and make her watch a vignette of what real female power looks like.
Is the secretary of State lugging around a Palin-size grudge about having to play a subservient role to the man who humbled her at the polls?
The scene was a great snapshot of two battle-tested empty nesters, both handsome blown-out blondes in their early 60s, both wearing consummately safe alpha-female pantsuits (Hillary in self-possessed powder blue, her new ambassador in respectful grey), both dedicated policy wonks who worked on behalf of oppressed women in unpronounceable places long before it was fashionable, both mothers (a grandmother in Verveer’s case) with hunky husbands (anchorman-handsome Philip Verveer is a powerful communications lawyer in Washington and soon to be the State Department’s U.S. coordinator for international communications with the rank of ambassador himself). When Melanne raised her hand to take the oath of office, the two women exchanged glances of veiled jubilance.
“There’s so much work to do!” Hillary exclaimed to me in the receiving line, her eyes sparkling at the thought of the impending avalanche of briefing papers heading her way from her new global women’s issues czarina.
Here’s one thing Sarah could learn from Hillary: Cheerfulness is more impressive than resentment. Is the secretary of State lugging around a Palin-size grudge about having to play a subservient role to the man who humbled her at the polls? Doesn’t Clinton have a better reason to resent Obama than Palin has to bang on about Letterman? I mean, if it weren’t for Barack, Hillary would now be president of the United States. How’s that for “hurtful?” Yet the president and his highest-ranking Cabinet officer seem to be getting along like Nick and Nora Charles. Or that‘s how Hillary’s playing it anyhow.
Here’s something Palin could learn from Letterman: Leave the jokes to the comedians. Does anyone believe that Palin really, truly thought Letterman’s sexual joke was about her 14-year-old daughter, Willow, not her 18-year-old, Bristol—who, after all, actually did get knocked up? My reading is she didn't believe it, but she was happy to have you believe it. Happy to have people—too many of them, unfortunately, who only pay attention with one ear—be her target audience.
The governor of Alaska doesn’t object to every wisecrack that relies for its punchline on a mental picture of a Palin daughter having sexual intercourse with an older man, even when the daughter is the one who’s still a minor. Here’s the statement Palin spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton issued after Dave invited the governor and her husband to come on the air with him: “The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.” Just to ensure that her youngest daughter wouldn't enjoy a weekend without embarrassment, Sarah Palin launched into a fresh tirade to CNN's Wolf Blitzer about Letterman's "crude, sexist, perverted joke about a 14-year-old being 'knocked up' by Alex Rodriguez."
Letterman’s joke may not have been his finest hour, but at least he swiftly apologized. Meanwhile, the nation’s hockey mom scores another goal for intellectual dishonesty.
Finally, here’s a second thing Sarah could learn from Hillary: It’s the substance that sustains, not the exposure. In terms of raw talent on the hustings, Sarah Palin is far more of a political natural than Hillary Clinton. She might get somewhere in the long run if she would just go away in the short run and read some books. Her problem is that she thinks the popular culture is the culture. She has no context, no knowledge of the world to offset her obsessive Nixonian flailings about how everyone is belittling her stature as the hardworking governor of Alaska. Her answers on CNN about Pentagon cuts in missile defense that affect her state were as halting and glassy-eyed as a novice U.N. translator's attempt to grapple with Uzbek in his earphones.
Yet if Palin added some depth to her knowledge, she has so much she could offer. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is a mother of five who translated what she wanted for her kids into fighting for affordable health care and clean air. Palin has a disabled child, one of a sadly ignored subset of Americans whose chances to live a better life desperately need her celebrity spotlight. Teenage mothers could use a leg up from Palin, too, but she’s too busy ginning up celebrity feuds.
Take a leaf out of Hillary’s book, Sarah. (Or from Condi Rice, for that matter. Clinton's predecessor in the job likewise knows how to disappear herself for a bit while she recoups and rebrands.) Bide your time, don’t waste it. Study up—and shut up. If you were a real power woman, we wouldn’t be hearing from you right now, so soon after your vice presidential flameout. You’d be too busy preparing yourself for the day when you have something to say worth hearing.

What you, Tina and many others here are saying is that if you disagree with a woman's politics, it is best to personally attack her and her family, including her kids. Why do you think that is helpful? My guess is that you know that it does not help, but that it feels good to personally attack those you hate. I wonder if you would be comfortable with a conservative making similar jokes about Obama's daughter if she went through a personal crisis like Palin's daughter. I know as a conservative that my strategy would be to attack his policies and ideas, not his kids.
Many on the left need to decide whether division and hate is better than discussing ideas and solutions. Does not look like there is much interest in that though. It's a sad state of affairs imo.
MWaterman
I agree. Hillary Clinton would likely not have reacted to Letterman's poor joke by milking it for all the publicity she could possibly wring out of it - as did Governor Palin.

Are you kidding? She would have gone on Meredith Viera's show and bloviated about the vast right-wing conspiracy Letterman belongs to. One thing that any Clinton lover or hater has to admit is that the Clintons both seemed like good parents. She would NOT have let this go unchallenged.

Actually we already know how Hillary Clinton would have handled a situation where someone insulted herself and her daughter in front of a national audience. Google for John McCain's joke about Chelsea Clinton being the daughter of Janet Reno. Clinton did not respond by milking the situation for the sake of publicity.
BernieO
I disagree. The media is treating Palin the way it did Hillary and Bill in the 90's - like dishonest, cartoonish rubes. Hillary fought back at times, not that the media gave her protests any credence. The media either ignored the attacks on the Clintons (charges from people like Rush, Bob Novak and even some Congressmen that they murdered their friend Vince Foster for one) or joined in and promoted the smears (Whitewater was completely fabricated and sold to the media by right wing Clinton haters).
The media conveniently forgets its own part in the attempted destruction of all things Clinton, although it was again evident for anyone who paid attention during the primaries. Chris Matthews and Tucker Carlson both talked explicitly about Hillary as being castrating, for example with no push back from their peers.
I do not fault any parent for angrily defending their child against smarmy attacks. Letterman would do the same for his child. Unfortunately our media always defends its own unless they make racist remarks a la Imus. (Sexism is perfectly acceptable.) It is time the public stop being taken in by this a starts holding the media to the same standard they use for the rest of us. It is fine to criticize Palin on her policy positions, but she also deserves credit for what she has done right (the crucial trans Canadian gas pipeline agreement for one) and should not be held up to ridicule just because she does not come from a cool place.
Ritarita
Bernie-
Just the opposite.
I think Sarah Palin does come
From a cool place.
It's the Trans-Canadian pipeline deal
That I think is a mess.
possumdearie
If we get the astrpturfers arguing policy -- like the pipeline deal -- then we've got them right where we want them. Gov. Palin is smart to allow healthy free market competition determine the outcome of this project. Under AGIA, five companies were allowed to bid and only Trans-Canada qualified. Under law, TransCanada is entitled to the state's exclusive endorsement, plus up to $500 million in state subsidies and regulatory preference and streamlining, in exchange for adhering to a series of state commitments.
The deal announced this weekend with Exxon signing on is a significant development. Another company formed by BP and ConocoPhillips is also pursuing a separate deal outside AGIA. The White House wants a piece of the action. All of this dismisses the claims of opponents to this project, competing Alaskan Republicans who still voted for this legislation, that the market is not there for natural gas. If that were the case, there wouldn't be such a clamoring from so many parties to secure a deal.

All you guys have it wrong. It was the "slutty flight attendent" comment that got under her skin. Remember, she was a beauty queen!

Tina is a brilliant writer and I love her appearing on Morning Joe, but unfortunately she has become one of the "Manhatten Social Elites " and cannot fathom sitting across a table at lunch and having a relaxed conversation with someone like Governor Palin. Tina's talent, unfortunately is getting buried with the ruins of what was once a great city, until all the crazies took over. I do wish Tina would again write "out of the box, not within the Manhatten club fantasies".

The reason Tina could not sit down over lunch with Palin is that Palin is not
serious...she really doesn't offer anything to the conversation but her angry
right wing platitudes...no new thoughts..and quite honestly, she's just not interesting...Hillary is a serious person, whether you agree with her politics or not. This country has made a decision that it is ready for big thinkers...who have intentions of improving this country both at home and abroad....and if you ask me after such a brief interlude of a new administration, it is not perfect,( but who is?) but their intellectual capacities are being put to their very highest and best use. I am thankful. I think Tina is being kind and giving Palin more credit than she deserves (just in case)...I don't think, no matter how hard she cracks the books, or takes elocution lessons, (although both would help her cause alot) that she will ever ever be up to the task she aspires to.
p4poetic
Are you serious? That is completely irrelevant. If being concerned with more important issues instead of relaxed conversations and dining with a politician that we don't know personally makes someone an 'elitist', than so be it. They are elected government officials, not potential blind dates.
boyter
Tina's talent was in looking very good. Regrettably when she opened her mouth she sounded like a beauty pageant contestant. Chelsea Clinton was attacked and belittled in the press, Amy Carter was belittled in the press, and Gerald Ford's kids weren't treated too kindly either, Neither were Nixon's or Johnson's. The last kids not to have a rough time belonged to Kennedy.

Hillary is in a very important position and so far North Korea and Iran look worse than ever, so I wouldn't be giving so many kudos to Hillary just yet. Sarah Palin is a governor and that's commendable. The fact that Sarah stood up for herself and her family against Letterman and stands for decency is commendable too.
motrbotr
"If it were not for Obama, Hillary would have won." Really, and how do you know this??? Stick to facts please. There is so much more wrong with this piece but as usual I cant make it past the first few paragraphs. I do try tho.
xlntcat
I, too, do not think that anyone can assume that Hillary would have won. I have never been Clinton supporters, but two things impressed me during the campaign. Clinton exhibited an impressive body of knowledge, and I had to grudgingly admire her tenacity at the end of the race. Her change of tone since becoming Secretary of State is also a pleasant surprise. Unlike Ferrero or Palin, she has proved to be a woman of cognitive substance and political acumen.
Dreamer4Ever
She WOULD have won.
Sorry, say what you will about the lady's policies, but they don't make 'em much tougher. The Clinton Machine is formidable.
And after Bush, no Republican was going to win, not up against a Democrat even half-alive.
If Obama were anything less then the best campaigner this generation has yet produced, we'd have our first woman president right now. It's not a stretch.
p4poetic
I have to disagree. A democrat was going to win regardless who it was.
And its kind of a given that had Hillary been the nominee, McCain would of never chosen Palin to begin with. So that gives us the scenario, how would his campaign turn out had he had, say, Mitt Romney, for a vice president? Much different.

LOOK HOW SHE HAD ALL OF YOU GOING WITH JOE THE PLUMBER. A GOVERNOR RUNNING FOR THE HIGHEST OFFICE SPENT HER CAMPAIGN QUOTING THE WORDS OF A MAN WHO HAD COLLECTION NOTICES, 3 YEARS BACK TAXES AND WAS NEVER A PLUMBER. She did not back down or politely laugh it off.
She maintained that this type of joke about any young woman is unacceptable and contributes to why I worry about creepy guys that look normal going after my little girl or discriminating against her in the future.

Governor Sarah Palin had ample material for publicity, both in her various events in Auburn, New York, and in her vist to Texas to move forward the agreement between Exxon Mobile and TransCanada to build the biggest infrastructure in North American history. Does anyone in their sane senses really believe that she need a spat about her daughters with the likes of David Letterman. As for Hillary Clinton, much as I respect aspects of her personality and career, it has to be asked honestly, whether we would ever have heard of her if it were not for her husband. Love her or loath her, Sarah Palin is a self-made woman.

PUSSIMDEARIE SAYS--->The only Palin daughter who accompanied the Governor to NY was the 14 YO. Letterman wisecracked about Spitzer soliciting sex from her and about her being raped in the dugout of Yankee stadium during the 7th inning of a game. @@@@@ INNOVATIONS SAYS-->SARAH PALIN TOLD KATIE COURIC IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW THAT IF A 14 YR OLD GIRL WAS RAPED EVEN BY HER FATHER, THAT IT WOULD NOT BE AN EXCUSE TO HAVE AN ABORTION. THAT'S HOW MUCH SARAH PALIN CARES ABOUT 14 YR OLDS BEING RAPED. SO WHETHER YOU THINK LETTERMAN KNEW OR DIDNT KNOW THAT WILLOW WAS THERE IS IRRELEVANT. BECAUSE BOTTOM LINE IS, SHE REALLY WASNT OFFENDED. IF SHE WAS, SHE WOULD'VE BEEN OFFENDED A WHILE AGO WHEN OTHER COMICS MADE THE SAME JOKE HERE'S A FEW:
1)Gov. Palin announced over the weekend that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant. And you thought John Edwards was in trouble before! Now he has really done it." -- "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," 9/2/08
2) "Sarah Palin is going to drop the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers' hockey game. Then Palin will spend the rest of the game trying to keep the hockey players out of her daughter's penalty box." --Conan O'Brien
3)The theme for tonight's Republican convention is 'Who is John McCain' ... Tomorrow night's theme is, `Who forgot to check if the vice president's daughter is pregnant?"' -- "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," 9/2/08
4)"I don't think that a young lady getting pregnant should even be news, unless John Edwards is the father. Then that is kinda news." -- "The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson," 9/2/08
PUSSIMDEARIE MADE A COMPLETE ASHHOLE OF HIM/HERSELF WITH THIS ONE--->Oh, sure. You're above commenting, as you cut and paste SOME BATSHIT CRAZY WALL OF TEXT. Now, you want to get into abortion? Let's do this.
Palin's interview with Couric -- her exact words -- "I would choose life." Here is the transcript:
Couric: If a 15-year-old is raped by her father, do you believe it should be illegal for her to get an abortion, and why?
Palin: I am pro-life, and I'm unapologetic in my position that I am pro-life. I understand there are good people on both sides of the abortion debate. In fact, good people in my own family have differing views on abortion, and when it should be allowed. Do I respect people's opinions on this? Now, I would counsel to choose life. I would also like to see a culture of life in this country. But I would also like to take it one step further. Not just saying I am pro-life and I want fewer and fewer abortions in this country, but I want them, women who find themselves in circumstances that are absolutely less than ideal, for them to be supported, and adoptions made easier.
Couric: But ideally, you think it should be illegal for a girl who was raped or the victim of incest to get an abortion?
Palin: I'm saying that, personally, I would counsel the person to choose life, despite horrific, horrific circumstances that this person would find themselves in. And, um, if you're asking, though, kind of fundamentally here, should anyone end up in jail for having an ... abortion, absolutely not. That's nothing I would ever support.
That being said, you go from misrepresenting Palin's personal views on life, when it begins and when the law steps in favoring the mother or the child. Hang on to your effin hats, though, here comes the slippery slope argument that beats all. ECLAMPSIA. Are you kidding me? Do you realize how few abortions are because of rape? Do you realize how few rapists are brought to justice with the current laws in place? A 15 YO girl can go into a clinic, having been raped, get an abortion without parental notification and never breathe a word about what happened to her? Does this strike you as ideal?
Again, you halfwits seem to think this about self-esteem, that it was a joke about teen pregnancy rather than a joke about sexually assaulting a minor. All four jokes you listed have nothing to do with this. Let's see...
1. Joke about John Edwards cheating on his cancer-stricken wife
2. Hockey mom has to keep men away from her hot daughter
3. The McCain team seemed surprised that Bristol was pregnant (in fact, they knew but thought they could keep it private until amateur gynecologist / Hardy Boy Andrew Sullivan reported in The Atlantic Monthly that Palin faked her own pregnancy and Trigg was really Bristol's.)
4. Joke about John Edwards cheating on his cancer-stricken wife
Which of these comes even close to insinuating a 14 YO girl was raped at a ball game? Buehler? Anyone?
INNOVATIONS REPLIED---->YOU WANT ME TO UNDERSTAND HER VALUES ON LIFE AFTER A 14 YEAR OLD VIRGIN SUFFERS THE MOST TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE IN HER LIFE AND SHE HAS TO KEEP THE BABY U PERFECT CANDIDATE FOR BRAIN-SURGERY YOU!! AND YOUR INTERPRETATION OF THE OTHER JOKES INDICATES YOUR LEVEL OF READING AND THATS WHY ALL YOUR FIGURES ABOUT THE ECONOMY ARE WRONG AND YOU'RE TALKING SO MUCH SH*T INSULTING PEOPLE AND YOU'VE BEEN 100% WRONG ON EVERYTHING. YOU CANT EVEN INTERPRET THE JOHN EDWARDS JOKE. THE JOKE SAYS: Gov. Palin announced that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant. And you thought John Edwards was in trouble before! Now he has really done it." AND YOU THINK THE JOKE WAS ON " Joke about John Edwards cheating on his cancer-stricken wife" LMAOROFL!!! Anyway, my point is that when a woman has that kind of high self-esteem that she volunteers in paegents, basically you like looking sexy. You like throwing on the bikini and walk down the runway showing america your behind. So dont tell me that at 46 yrs old, with 5 kids and a great figure, that if someone compares her to a slutty flight attendant, that she';ll REALLY be insulted. No matter what people think of Palin,
she was defending her daughter.
How would liberals react if some

about the child of a Liberal politician,
for example, Chelsea Clinton ?
Might they suspend someone, say David Shuster,
for implying Chelsea was " being pimped out ? "

Chelsea Clinton's father
Was reputed to be Janet Reno
During the Clinton Presidency.

The two situations are not comparable as the Clintons kept Chelsea out of the public. Palin, on the other hand, paraded her daughter around so right wingers could cheer about how she "did the right thing" (had the baby) and intended to marry the father (we know how that ended up). You can't have it both ways, like a celebrity that parades in front of the camera when it suits them and when it doesn't wants privacy. Keep your family business private and don't respond everytime someone makes a stupid comment and not only will you be left alone more often but mainstream America will hold you in higher regard.

All politicians introduce their children when they campaign. Sasha and Malia were omnipresent on the campaign trail, on the cover of US Weekly, onstage with their parents. If you think the Palin children somehow deserve any of this because Bristol had a child out of wedlock, I'll remind you that no one called Obama's mother anything, but they celebrated her strength for having him and raising him and doing it with the help of her family. His own daughters, if they were "punished with a baby", would be spared the humiliation Bristol Palin has endured, because Sasha and Malia would be hustled off to an abortionist and the fetus would be vacuumed out. Obama already said so.
ittybittykitty
That happened to Chelsea. I thought it was terrible at the time. Don't you remember? Amy Carter and the Bush girls were also the butt of jokes. And going back even farther, there was a comedy album about the Kennedy family in the White House too. I don't think anyone's kids are off limits and that is too bad. And in case you don't know, Chelsea, Amy and the Kennedy kids fall into the liberal camp. This goes both ways.
ittybittykitty
And one more thing, there was that famous joke made by John McCain, which I believe is on video which went along the lines of "Why is Chelsea so ugly (yes, he was referring to then President Clinton's daughter), because Janet Reno is her father." This stuff is unkind and it cuts both ways. I remember lots and lots of unkind remarks by comics and others about Chelsea being unattractive.
xlntcat
Letterman's remarks could be considered tame as well as stale compared to SNL, Conan and Leno during the campaign. The difference is that campaign advisers prevented Palin from engaging in a low class hillbilly feud with comics. Palin exploited her own children to advance her political ambitions. She's the one dragging a 14 year old threw the mud. She lobbied hard for the VP nomination with total disregard for her pregnant daughter or her 4 month old Down's Syndrome infant.

....And, some Republican Party official in South Carolina just made a remark about an escaped zoo gorilla being an "ancestor of Michelle's". Ugliness on both sides. Although, I'm sure those on the right will wonder why those on the left can't take a joke. I wonder if Michelle will issue statements and go around on the news circuit to attack this guy. Doubtful. More class.

An activist on his Facebook page making a tasteless remark is different once again. Chelsea went through an awkward phase where she could be described as less than beautiful. Pointing that out is insensitive, but NOWHERE near a joke about raping her made on national TV.

" Palin - she does not give a Damn about any of her children "
Wow "wanting."
You are a piece of work,
sounding so warm and embraceable.
Are you bitter, with the weight of the
whole world on your shoulders, stewing in hatred for anyone
who might not agree with you ?
Sounds like someone hasn't had any lovin' in a long time ?
Sounding like the kind of person who becomes so bitter over time,
the kind of person who turns all the lights off at Halloween
so kids won't knock on your door.
Go get a massage . . . or something.

Oh, right. "Wanting" (class, decency and common sense!) is supposedly so good at volleying a strong argument from the opposing tema. Pfft! You could cut and paste the comments from every single Daily Beast thread. "You carny trash" and whore and blah blah. Wanting has something against circus folks. Maybe its mother is the bearded lady and papa was the disappearing man.
ittybittykitty
Dear Possum,
This is what I meant. A horrible comment about the First Lady is just an "activist posting a tasteless remark on Facebook (I believe that the activist is, or was, pretty high up in the Republican Party.) Jokes about Chelsea during her "awkward phase" are harmless (Rush Limbaugh holding up a picture of the White House dog and saying it is Chelsea is "harmless"?). Don't you see that there is no difference? It depends on which side you are on as to whether or not you are outraged. We are all in this together you know. Either you should be outraged by all of it, or non of it, no matter which side of the political spectrum you are on. You can't pick and chose.
Also, I don't think Letterman ever said anything about rape. It was Palin who brought that image into the picture and also that of David Letterman as a pedophile with her daughter. Thanks a lot for those images Sarah! Would have never entered my head if you hadn't put them there. I feel sorry for Willow, because she is old enough to have heard all of this stuff. Maybe she is even reading these comments. Seems like there might have been a more discreet way for her mom to handle all of this. Maybe a personal call to Letterman? Might have been a lot better, but she wouldn't get any publicity, and that is the point.
possumdearie
No, Kitty, an activist is not an elected official. Someone from SC making an off-color joke on their Facebook page is not the same as publicly "joking" on national TV about raping a 14 YO girl, or sexually harassing a successful female Governor.
Commenting on Chelsea's looks, or even going back thousands of years to the remark by Emperor Claudius that the Consul's wife was ugly enough to be one of Caligula's equine Senatorial appointments (where was the GOP's outrage then?!! The hypocrisy!) is not the same as joking about child rape.
The issue here is not self-esteem, though calling a 14 YO who did nothing but accompany her mother to a baseball game a WHORE and joking about raping her during the 7th inning certainly shakes your self-esteem, but it is rather about making a clear statement that exploiting minors is very wrong.
bucksandbron
To possum, PLEASE show me a picture of this 14 year old (according to many sources, she was born in January 1994, making her 15 1/2- guess mom and dad don't know how old their daughter is? or are they trying to make this an even bigger issue by making her seem younger?) at the game with her parents. I cannot find a picture ANYWHERE of her at the game- which the Palins left in the 6th inning.
Also, the Palins were the ones to bring in the word "rape" as well as talking about the joke as referring to Willow. The joke- tasteless as it may have been, I'll give you that- was about Bristol, the Governor's unmarried daughter, who has a son.
Obviously, nothing anyone says to you with comparison between this and other comments about other people in the public eye will make any difference to you. I do, however, wonder where Palin's outrage was when SNL had a skit about Todd having an incestuous relationship with their daughters. She was A GUEST on the show a month later! Letterman's joke (again, tasteless though it may have been) was nowhere near as offending as that statement.
possumdearie
Again, it's not about hurting people's feelings. It's about teaching you animals boundaries. It is not acceptable to joke about statutory rape. That the joke is hurtful is a no-brainer. That encouraging society to speak about young women -- children -- the way you speak about women should be grounds for firing.
Bunx05
Possum--Why are we all animals? It seems you're fighting just as hard as everyone else to make people believe your point, so a few things:
1) Letterman shouldn't have made a joke about someone's kid.
2) The joke was about Bristol (who's 18) and the fact that A-Rod can't resist a young co-ed (and they go willingly), not about Willow being raped.
3) Sarah Palin first to mention rape or Willow.
4) Letterman is not an elected official either. Essentially, his facebook page is national television.
5) The facebook comment is a direct reference to one of the most egregious stereotypes against black people (we all look like monkies/we're less than human)
I don't have anything against you (or anyone else in these comments), and I disagree with many of the statements made about Sarah Palin or you or the people you're disagreeing with. I think that this issue has been blown out of proportion as a direct result of untruths and twisted context in the media; much of which you are repeating here.
Thanks

Personally, I think Hillary looks decidedly enhanced. What could possibly be diminishing about service during crisis? She is exhibiting a quality of character I didn't know she possessed. You can't be a weak, fragile ego and work hand in hand with your once opponent.
martykz
Yeah, but what about those thighs...
bobj72
"YesAddison", you said; ... "Hillary looks utterly diminished these days." ... I say, your obvious dislike for Hillary feeds your "illegitimate perception" of arguably the Most Intelligent Person to ever be appointed Secretary of State - who BTW, is a Classy Lady! Further, the immature judgement you offer makes "Air Head Blonde jokes" palatable. CLEARLY Hillary would have outdistanced McCain-Palin by a MUCH GREATER MARGIN (than President Obama) since a significant number of Staunch Hillary supporters voted Republican, out of resentment.
Llplo99
Right on Tina....I agree with everything you have said here. What bothers me the most about Palin is her self serving dishonesty such as in this case with Letterman and with the type of scary rhetoric she incited during the election. The "kill him" and the "paling around with terrorists" comments during the election are the type of right wing domestic terrorist war cries that, I believe, contributed to such events as the killing of Dr. Tiller, the Holocaust museum shootings, etc. I seriously do not believe she has the intellectual capabilities to ever be POTUS...most Americans will not tolerate her. If she loses her looks, her base and the old conservative GOP guys will drop her faster than last season's Versace.
TREESKE
Totally agree and the fact remains; Growing up in a beauty contest world leaves little room for Intellectual shaping and no amount of books she would read can correct that.
Kingsfold
What strikes me as odd here is that the same people who in 2001 were decrying the profiling of all Muslims based on the actions of a few men (who just happened to kill thousands of people), are now calling for the profiling of millions of conservatives based on the actions of one man (who killed one person).
possumdearie
Antisemitism is what contributed to the Holocaust Museum shootings, and nothing else. If you think this comes from the right wing, you should know the killer ranted about "neoconservatives) and intended to head next to the Weekly Standard offices and shoot Bill Kristol.
As for the intellectual capabilities of our POTUS, he could have spoken of Israel with more respect in Cairo rather than perpetuating the land-grabbing, deceitful, Johnny-Come-Lately narrative of bitter Arabs. Look to Netanyahu's recent speech on a possible two-state solution.
Furthermore, Bernardine Dohrn and William Ayers are domestic terrorists. The Weather Underground was a terrorist group (once again from the left), and even if they wreaked havoc on the general public when Obama was 8, he was aware of their despicable acts, Ayers' flag-stomping and 911 comments, when he launched his political career in heir living room.
Palin never incited the mob to "kill him" or slandered him. Imagine the outcry if Barack Obama's effigy had been hung, or "artists" encouraged people to have their picture taken shooting him. These offenses should have been met with righteous fury by women's groups, but there was silence instead. Palin was right to publicly condemn Lecherman's lurid joke about the statutory rape of a 14 YO girl. It also gave her a chance to talk about her recent coup with the natural gas pipeline and the real reason for her visit to New York, official state business and charity work.
Both Hillary and Sarah Palin have gone on with their jobs and their lives after the 2008 election. Hillary conceded to Obama and has no reason to resent him for beating her. Tina Brown is way out in left field here: "I mean, if it were nOt for Barack, Hillary would now be POTUS How's that for "hurtful"?" I'll tell you what it is... life. Hillary lost. There is no equivalence here and no chance for Hillary's supporters to insert their heroine into this narrative. Besides, we learned that race trumps gender in Democratic party identity politics, so she could take her sad tale back to their side, but no one would listen. They will just send her off to "have some tea" and spout platitudes like "women's rights are human rights", while women are stoned to death in countries that Obama would never dare criticize.
Finally, Tina Brown makes excuses for the knuckledragger representatives of her "progressive" movement. "Does anyone believe that Palin really, truly thought Letterman's sexual joke was about her 14-year-old daughter, Willow, not her 18-year-old, Bristol-who, after all, actually did get knocked up? My reading is she didn't believe it, but she was happy to have you believe it." I have another take.
Which daughter was at the actual game in question? The 14 YO. Does Tina Brown or David Letterman actually care which daughter it was? No. It was made clear that Sarah Palin is a "slutty flight attendant" and passed this promiscuity and fecund, overt sexuality onto *all* her daughters, like they are a coven of witches to be burned at the stake, so even if it weren't Bristol, who overshot the boundaries of taste by leftist standards by a mere 200 weeks, then it could as well have been Willow, who apparently "asked for it."
TREESKE
Who's in left field here? The 18 year old did get knocked up should not have surprised Palin since knowing to her, the young ones shared the same bed or did she think they would practice the Elvis/Prescilla type safe sex?

Mahank, Lecherman made this debate an "us against them" gang fight. These slurs we have from the elitists made at he expense of working class whites is tribalism. To the liberal urban elite, poor "whites" are those responsible for racism and other sins associated with the dominant culture, and thus by association taint the white aristocracy unfairly. These elites feel they own poor whites and can attack them when they step out of line, while other poor minorities must be bargained with, cajoled or targeted for large-scale oppression that can be kept under wraps.
Here are more of Lecherman's classist and sexist comments about Palin:
"You know, she reminds me, she looks like the flight attendant who won't give you a second can of Pepsi. No, you've had enough. We're landing. Looks like the waitress at the coffee shop who draws a little smiley face on your check. Have a nice day."
"She looks like the dip sample lady at Safeway. She looks like the nurse who weighs you and then makes you sit alone in your underwear for 20 minutes. She looks like the Olive Garden hostess who says, 'I'm sorry, your table isn't ready yet.' She looks like the infomercial lady who says she made $64,000 a month flipping condos."
"She looks like the lady at the bakery who yells out '44! 45!' She looks like a real estate agent whose picture you see on the bus stop bench. That's who she looks like. She looks like the lady who has a chain of cupcake stores."
In November 2008, Letterman told tanking CBS News anchor Katie Couric that he was "aroused" by Palin. In March 2009, Letterman attacked Bristol and snickered about her being "knocked up" again. This time, Letterman was deliberately unclear which daughter he was referring to. Other remarks having gone unanswered, he moved in for the kill and pushed the envelope further. Palin was justified and absolutely right to issue a statement.

SPAM wanting. Give it a rest and get off the glue. A small town mayor asked for earmarks and hired lobbyists. Call me a waaaaahmbulance!
Let's see you call out the real thieves in DC, those who are responsible for wrecking our economy, Senator Dodd, Congressman Frank, Franklin Raines, Jamie Gorelick, Nancy Pelosi...
What about the US House members passing out $9.1 million in bonuses to their staff members - on top of the $2.5 million in automatic pay raises that lawmakers gave themselves? I understand the average House aide got a 17% bonus while many Americans took a pay cut to their save jobs, if tey were lucky enough to dodge the "funemployment" (LA Times) line. Double digit unemployment. Rising gas prices. Massive inflation on the way.
You haven't said anything about that. Who authorized that? I surely didn't!
Executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
will be receiving $210 million in bonuses over an eighteen-month period, that's
$45 million more than the AIG bonuses.
In fact, Fannie and Freddie executives have already been awarded $51 million -
not a bad take. Who authorized that and
why haven't you expressed your outrage at this group who are largely
responsible for the economic mess we have right
now.

Wanting, you dumb macaca, you're out of your league here. You don't even know the difference between debt and deficit. You just make up numbers and yell WHORE when it hurts your brain to think.
The Bush administration racked up deficits of $158 billion in 2002, $378 billion in 2003, $413 billion in 2004, $318 billion in 2005, $248 billion in 2006, $162 billion in 2007, and $410 billion in 2008. Obama's trillions dwarf that "dangerous" spending.
In the span of four days, we saw the signing of the $787 billion stimulus bill, the rollout of a $275 billion housing proposal, discussion of Congress's remaining appropriations bills (about $400 billion) and word of a vaguely-defined financial stabilization plan that could ultimately cost $2 trillion. When representatives of GM and Chrysler said they might need $21 billion more to survive, it seemed like the change your alcoholic mother used to dig out from under her bed to send you to the store and go get her a pack of Newport 100s.
Obama's current spending proposals will cost more than the US spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the general war on terror and Hurricane Katrina in the last seven years. And that's before you throw in the $2 trillion fiscal stabilization plan. The CBO predicts his healthcare plan will leave 30b million unisnsured and cost $1 trillion. His projected budget over the next decade would cost $9.3 trillion. TWICE WHAT BUSH SPENT, SO STFU.
Bunx05
Possum--You have to add up all those deficit numbers to come to the total deficit created by the Bush administration. Then you need to calculate and add the interest on that money (don't forget to compound the percentage daily from the time of its inception). Finally, add the surplus that was in the treasury, and then you come up with the spending that the Bush administration created. Obama's spending, to date mind you, including the stimulus package is somewhere between 9 and 13.5% of that.
As for the healthcare plan, certain cuts have been proposed that would easily cut down the initial cost over the next 4 to 5 years to roughly $50 billion dollars. This is much more manageable than the rising cost of medicaid and medicare. Also, a public provider healthcare plan doesn't leave members of the public without insurance. Essentially, it prevents this from happening.

When representatives of GM and Chrysler said they might need $21 billion more to survive, it seemed like the change your alcoholic mother used to dig out from under her bed to send you to the store and go get her a pack of Newport 100s." @@@@@@@@ INNOVATIONS SAYS-->POSSUMDEARIE, I LOVE PEOPLE LIKE YOU BECAUSE IT DISPLAYS THE STUPIDITY ALL YOU RIGHTYS ACQUIRE FROM LISTENING TO GUYS LIKE HANNITY AND LIMBAUGH. ALL THOSE NUMBERS YOU THREW ARE COMPLETELY WAY WAY OFF. YOU EVER HEARD OF SOMETHING CALLED THE CONGRESSIONAL BUDGET OFFICE? THEY'RE NOBODY REALLY THIS IS WHAT THEY DO-->The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) is a federal agency within the legislative branch of the United States government. It is a government agency that provides economic data. AND ACCORDING TO THEIR JANUARY 2009 REPORT--> In January 2001, the Clinton Administration left office with a budget surplus projected to be $5.6 trillion over ten years. The Bush Administration squandered that budget surplus, and now is leaving a projected deficit of well over $4 trillion for that same period (2002-2011). One result of the Bush Administration's fiscal choices is that debt held by the public has grown from $3.4 trillion in 2001 to $6.3 trillion in 2009, an increase of 89 percent in just eight years. At the same time, the amount of that debt that is foreign-owned has tripled, from $1.0 trillion in 2001 to $3.0 trillion.**** YET THE NUMBERS YOU PROVIDE TOTAL UP ROUGHLY $2 TRILLION. SO BUSH WALKED IN TO OFFICE WITH A $5 TRILLION SURPLUS AND LEFT WITH A DEFICIT OF "WELL OVER" $4 TRILLION. SO IN 8 YEARS BUSH WENT THROUGH WELL OVER $9 TRILLION, AND NOBODY KNOWS WHERE THE F**K IT WENT. PERHAPS YOU HAVE A LIMBAUGH STORY FOR THAT ONE. LIKE THE WARS. OOOPS! THE CBO REPORTS THAT BUSH NEVER SPENT A DIME ON THE WARS.-->As a result of their misguided fiscal choices, President Bush and Republican Congresses squandered the budget opportunities they inherited and are passing along historically large budget deficits that will persist for years. The Bush Administration's refusal to offset the costs of its new tax cuts, new entitlement expansions, and the wars have led to the ballooning of the national debt. The Bush Administration has pushed through tax cuts that cost roughly $2 trillion, The wars have already cost nearly $900 billion. Yet, the Administration has paid for none of these measures. In fact, if the Bush Administration's tax cuts and the war had been fully offset, we would not be facing such a mountain of debt, which threatens our economy and our ability to meet the needs of our citizens.** WHERE DID THAT SURPLUS GO IF BUSH NEVER PAID FOR ANYTHING AND JUST RAN UP A TAB FOR THE NEXT GUY?? YES, OBAMA WILL BE DOING ALOT OF SPENDING, BUT LOOK WHAT HE HAS TO PAY. ON TOP OF WHAT IT'S GOING TO COST OBAMA TO GET THIS COUNTRY BACK ON ITS FEET, HE HAS TO PAY BUSH'S BILLS, AND LETS NOT FORGET THE $6 TRILLION BUSH BORROWED FROM CHINA THROUGHOUT HIS 8 YEARS AND WE'RE LOOKING AT WELL OVER $10 TRILLION ON BUSH ALONE THAT OBAMA IS GOING TO HAVE TO TRY AND PAY BACK. BEFORE HE EVEN TAKES CARE OF HIS OWN BUSINESS. AND SO IN CONCLUSION, The Clinton Administration proved that sustained efforts over time can successfully make progress in reducing deficits; it will likewise take time to climb out of the budgetary ditch that the current Administration is leaving behind....NOW WHAT WAS THAT SH*T YOU WAS SAYING ABOUT TINA BROWN AND SOMEBODY'S ALCOHOLIC MOTHER? WHAT'S THE MATTER SHE DUMPED YOU? NOT EVEN AN ALCOHOLIC MOTHER WANTS TO DEAL WITH STUPID RIGHTY'S WHO SHOOT THEIR MOUTH AND KNOW SH*T BUT TWO WORDS. A.M.RADIO AND FOXNEWS. PATHETIC SKUM!"

If you want to appear smart, at least when you're getting all CAPS-LOCKY and ANGRY, you should Innovate some fucking paragraphs. Are you even typing with opposable thumbs, you ignorant cave dweller?
Yeah, use CBO estimates for events that have already passed instead of just linking the US Treasury. There was never a Clinton surplus, dumbass.
Fiscal
Year Year
Ending National Debt Deficit
FY1993 09/30/1993 $4.411488 trillion
FY1994 09/30/1994 $4.692749 trillion $281.26 billion
FY1995 09/29/1995 $4.973982 trillion $281.23 billion
FY1996 09/30/1996 $5.224810 trillion $250.83 billion
FY1997 09/30/1997 $5.413146 trillion $188.34 billion
FY1998 09/30/1998 $5.526193 trillion $113.05 billion
FY1999 09/30/1999 $5.656270 trillion $130.08 billion
FY2000 09/29/2000 $5.674178 trillion $17.91 billion
FY2001 09/28/2001 $5.807463 trillion $133.29 billion
As can clearly be seen, in no year did the national debt go down, nor did Clinton leave President Bush with a surplus that Bush subsequently turned into a deficit. Yes, the deficit was almost eliminated in FY2000 (ending in September 2000 with a deficit of "only" $17.9 billion), but it never reached zero--let alone a positive surplus number. And Clinton's last budget proposal for FY2001, which ended in September 2001, generated a $133.29 billion deficit. The growing deficits started in the year of the last Clinton budget, not in the first year of the Bush administration.
Keep in mind that President Bush took office in January 2001 and his first budget took effect October 1, 2001 for the year ending September 30, 2002 (FY2002). So the $133.29 billion deficit in the year ending September 2001 was Clinton's. Granted, Bush supported a tax refund where taxpayers received checks in 2001. However, the total amount refunded to taxpayers was only $38 billion . So even if we assume that $38 billion of the FY2001 deficit was due to Bush's tax refunds which were not part of Clinton's last budget, that still means that Clinton's last budget produced a deficit of 133.29 - 38 = $95.29 billion.
Clinton clearly did not achieve a surplus and he didn't leave President Bush with a surplus, but that won't stop you astroturfing little fascists from lying till your ugly faces fall off. I could go point by point and knock down your claims, like Bush never included the Iraq war in his budget (Are you high? Do you not remember all those votes in Congress on approving budgets?), but since you're RANTING ABOUT THE CLINTON BUDGET THAT NEVER HAPPENED, I'll assume I'm dealing with an unhinged moonbat and drop it.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. I do not always agree with Tina Brown & I sometimes think she is way to agreeable with the crew at Morning Joe who can also be incredably sexist and muttonheaded but I really liked every point that she made here about Clinton & Palin. Palin really does not have any context beyond pop culture & she continues to reduce herself as a viable politician every time she goes on national tv & can't answer questions about any issue outside the spectrum of herself. She side stepped an opportunity to talk about the natural gas pipeline with Matt Lauer, which was ostensibly why she was in the lower 48 to begin with. AK. are really fed up with her ineffectual governing, & the sooner she announces that she is not running for gov. again the sooner she becomes the problem of the GOP & we can get a politician in place that cares about Alaskans.

EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM ARE LIES AND MADE UP STUFF. BUT I HAVE A LIFE. THIS ONE HOWEVER, I'M GOING TO REPLY VERY SERIOUS SO U CAN SEE WHAT YOUR'RE WASTING YOUR TIME ON. SARAH PALIN TOLD KATIE COURIC IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIE THAT IF A 14 YR OLD GIRL WAS RAPED EVEN BY HER FATHER, THAT IT WOULD NOT BE AN EXCUSE TO HAVE AN ABORTION, THEN HOPEFULLY IF YOU'RE STILL ON EARTH, YOU WOULD CONCLUDE THAT THIS WOMAN HAS NO CONSIDERATION FOR KIDS WHATSOEVER.
DO YOU OR HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A WOMAN THAT GOT RAPED AND PREGNANT AND THOUGHT IT WAS FUNNY? RAPE VICTIMS GO THROUGH ALOT OF PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL TRAUMA. THE PHYSICAL PART OF THE TRAUMA COMES FROM THE EMOTIONAL PART. NAUSEA, VOMITING, LOSS OF APPETITE, BLOOD PRESSURE RISES,. ETC..THE MINUTE THAT EGG IS CONCEIVED THE MOTHER CANT BE FEELING THIS WAY. IT PUTS HER AND THE BABY AT RISK FOR DEATH. THE COMBINATION OF THE SYMPTOMS I JUST GAVE TO AN AVERAGE PERSON WHO SUFFERED AN EMOTIONAL TRAUMA GOES AWAY IN A WEEK MAYBE. BUT WHEN YOU'RE PREGNANT, IT CAN LEAD TO MANY SERIOUS SITUATIONS, AND A COMMON ONE IS CALLED " ECLAMPSIA".. WELL 1ST COME "PRE-ECLAMPSIA" BUT IT MORE THAN USUALLY MOVES UP TO THE NECT STAGE (ECLAMPSIA). SOME DOCTORS CALL IT BY ITS LONG NAME "Hypertensive disorder of pregnancy and toxemia of pregnancy". EITHER WAY, ABOUT 90% OF THE TIME THE MOTHER WILL MISCARRIAGE BY HER 3RD MONTH AND DEOENDING ON HOW SEVERE HER ECLAMPSIA, SHE CAN GO INTO A SHOCK-INDUCED COMA. THAT'S HOW MUCH SARAH PALIN CARES ABOUT 14 YR OLDS.
*** SO NOW, JUST LIKE YOU INSIST THAT LETTERMAN KNEW WILLOW WAS THERE, NOW WE CAN CONCLUSE THAT PALIN KNEW ABOUT THESE JOKES BUT CARED TO DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. SO WHY NOW? HMMMM, DAVE WORKS FOR CBS?? AND SO DOES KATIE COURIC. WHAT A COINCIDENCE. CE LA VEE.

"In this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect."...
IS THAT WHY OUR TROOPS ARE IN AFGHANISTAN?? IRAQ? FOR OUR RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH?? I DIDNT KNOW AFGHANISTAN AND IRAQ TOOK AWAY THAT RIGHT. THE TRUTH IS, THE ONLY VICTIM HERE IS LETTERMAN. SHE DIDNT PICK ON NO OTHER COMIC (AND BELIEVE ME, IF AROD PISSED HER OFF, IMAGINE IF LETTERMAN SAID THAT SHE WAS KNOCKED UP THE THE NEW YORK YANKEES. BUT SHE DIDNT SEEM TO CARE ABOUT THE PHILADELPHIA FLYERS TRYING TO GET INTO HER DAUGHTERS'; "PENALTY BOX".. THE JOKE DIDNT SAY WHICH DAUGHTER EITHER. HYPOCRACY 100%.

Oh, sure.

I think in rural areas though, it is alot more about who you know than what you know.
And many of the service clubs, that are doorways to power in small towns, are clubs run for and run by men, and there are sub clubs for women. It sounds crazy, but it seems the way it works in small towns. The masons for example is a closed group, you don't even know who belongs to it, but there is a lot of money involved.
It doesn't matter how many books you read, money wins elections.
And also a feeling of safety influences whether a person will run or not. Personal information or mis-information, is used all the time against and for people in rural areas in ways that can't happen in big urban centres. In rural areas elections can be more like a popularity contest.
I can see how Sarah Palin could be very popular in a rural area, and probably could feel lost in an urban area. Whereas Hillary Clinton is obviously big city in many ways.
I think there is a big difference in a rural and urban politician.
That is probably why the jokes bothered Sarah Palin so much, she would be in an environment where people act very personal with each other, and that is how people get back stabbed.
Protecting personal information, which probably Hillary would have done for Chelsey, doesn't seem to occur to some people in rural areas.
Without a bit of privacy, people can and do nuts.
And woman are terrible at gossiping about other women, regardless of the dangers involved. I would think that is why a joke would effect Sarah Palin from a rural background, much differently than a woman in an urban environment.
The big excuse you hear in rural areas well I thought you knew them, that is why the personal information or mis-information can be so dangerous. The fine line between a civil matter and a criminal matter, is if you know the person or not. If a person pretends to know you, or pushes themselves on to you, you are pretty much alone. I think small towns can raise very cruel people.

The one overall thing that everyone seems to forget, persons such as Letterman, who is a bitter, bitter man and turned me off several years previously, Governor Palin did not ask for this, it was thrust upon her, Yes, I know that everyone is saying that she sould have not paraded her children out on the political stage (just as all the rest of the candidates have done) it does not matter who you are, or whether you are liberal or conservative, the bottom line is that this should be about Letterman and not Governor Palin, the Governor's family is the victim here, and naturally all the New York social socitey is outraged that the Governor continues to answer questions and defending her family on the issue, If the media wants this to go away, then do not ask the questions, Letterman will go on being his boring, obnocious self indulging not funny comedian. OH; the audacity of this hick Governor of Alaska, who had never acheived anything, come to our city and have the gall to take offense at what this idiot comedian said. If this had been my wife, and he had said this about one of my daughters, I would be waiting on Mr Letterman in the parking lot, and I can assure you he would think twice before making another comment about someone else's family. Fortunately I live in Atlanta where we respect person's beliefs, families and especially young women. What everyone is saying is "if you are not a member of the upper Manhatten Social order, you have no right to try to achieve anything in life, as you are just not good enough"???!!!!!
xlntcat
She may not have asked for it but she was gleeful when she heard it. She giggled just like she did when the Prankster referred to enjoying the porno "Nailin' Palin" This is what Palin thrives on.
spinozareader
So, in Atlanta, you can "respect person's [sic] beliefs, families and especially young women. But let a person say something you don't like, then law and order be damned !? Please tell me that if someone was guilty of a verbal slight/denigration of someone you loved that you wouldn't see this as justification of lying in wait for them in a parking lot and then--what--committing a felony??? Ridiculous. That's not even equivalent to the now-illegal duel.
Bunx05
Her taking offense is not the problem. Her retaliating in a way that brings everyone's attention to the "hurtful" statement against her daughter is. No one saw or heard that joke the night it aired (Letterman's ratings are pretty low comparatively speaking). Everyone heard it after Governor Palin brought our attention to it.
GetSmart
Tina,
Now that you and everyone on the left has ridiculed Sarah Palin and her family
for the billionth time, you've accomplished 3 things.
1. You and the left have clearly alerted the center/right as to how very
scared you are of Governor Sarah Palin's political and personal strength--
so you have tried to marginalize her the way the left tried to marginalize
President Ronald Reagan--newsflash, it didn't work.
And that's because people can judge for themselves and are capable of
drawing their own conclusions. Try as you may, but you cannot define
Governor Palin. Like President Reagan, she'll go over you heads directly
to the American people.
2. Your sanctimonious tone about how great Hillary and her radical, pro-
abortion, feminist cohorts are is laughable. You hate Governor Palin
because she's a conservative, pro-life women. If she shared your
ideology, you'd be applauding her.
(By the way, Sarah Palin has mentored many women and men--just
not the snobby, elitist types you represent. She is also trying to raise
5 children (two of whom are women) in a very sick culture that is
dominated by the likes of you, Hugh Hefner, and David Letterman.)
So, basically, you've made Gov. Palin t-h-e-e person in the Republican
Party to rally around. You've elevated and insulated her from (possibly)
more serious criticisms.
(It would just kill the likes of you if Gov. Palin became the the first female
American President--and you'll do anything--and I mean anything--to stop
her.)
3. You have given the American public a glimpse of how ugly you and your
allies truely are. Your say the cruelist, most vile things--then wrap your
words around a laugh and an applause. You and your friends are so
small (tiny even) that not only won't you apologize for your perverseness--
you'll defend it instead.
Tina, you and your allies have defined yourselves as ugly beasts--and
foolish ones at that.
To recap:
By your constant ridiculing of Gov. Palin, you've alerted your
political enemies to the fact that you are scared to death of
her potential leadership. And you are scared of Gov. Palin not
because you really think she's stupid, but because you despise
her politics, her talent, and her effectiveness.
You've succeeded in elevating Gov. Palin's position and strength
in the Republican Party. You think she can't be elected
President? We'll just see about that.
You've defined yourselves as an ugly, vicious, and deeply
disturbed lot. Keep it up. Decent Americans will wind up
rejecting - you - instead of the honest, hardworking, mother of
five you're trying so desperately to destroy.
jyrenejim
Do you mean a "Community Organizer"????
exploora
It is true though, the service club circuit is the door to power in many small towns, and to become a member you have to go through a procedure, sometimes the members are male only, and the sub-club is female.
Tina is right, Hillary could teach Palin alot, though I would think if Palin's husband did a "naughty" with an intern the way Hilary's husband did, I would think that she would not hold her wrath in, and share it in private only.
That is often the way small towns work, everyone will know anyway, sooner or later, the story will get even better. Possibly starts off with one intern lands up with two or three interns.
I would think McCain just assumed that Palin was more book smart than she appeared to be, and would have at least one favourite magazine about global issues that she reads regularly. I would guess he was very surprised when he realized how unsophisticated she really appeared to be.
But people in small towns, of course not all people, often don't care what is going on anywhere else, especially if they live there to espcae modern awfulness.

POSSUMDEARIE SAYS --> That being said, you go from misrepresenting Palin's personal views on life, when it begins and when the law steps in favoring the mother or the child.
INNOVATIONS SAYS ---> WELL NOW YOU SOUND A LITTLE BIT NORMAL. SINCE REPUBLICANS ARE SO PERFECT, THEY NEVER BREAK THE LAW LMAO TED STEVENS. ANYWAY, YEA IF YOU'RE GONNA GO THAT ROUTE, SURE WE CAN DEAL WITH THAT. BUT NOW, HOW MANY DOCTORS ARE GOING TO WANT TO TAKE THAT RISK? AND YOU THINK THAT BY ABORTION BEING ILLEGAL, THEY'RE GOING TO CHARGE $20.
" ECLAMPSIA. Are you kidding me? Do you realize how few abortions are because of rape?" JUST SO YOU KNOW ECLAMPSIA IS NOT AN ABORTION. BUT YOU DONT SEEM TO GET THE POINT. ITS NOT HOW MANY ABORTIONS OR BIRTHS ARISE FROM A RAPE, IT'S THE FACT THAT SHE WOULD NOT PERMIT AN ABORTION TO BE MADE ON A 15 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO WAS RAPED BY HER FATHER! ARE YOU JUST RETARDED? DO U HAVE A SISTER?? YOUR FATHER F**KED YOUR 15 YEAR OLD SISTER, HIS PWN FLESH AND BLOOD, AND PALIN SAYS SHE GOTTA HAVE THE BABY. YOU'RE COOL WITH THAT?? TALK ABOUT DICTATORSHIP. MAYBE SHE HANGS OUT IN RUSSIA NOT JUST LOOKS AT IT.
AND YOU WANT ME TO UNDERSTAND HER VALUES ON LIFE. OHH THAT MAKES AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT STORY MAYBE WE OUGHT TO WRITE A LETTER TO TODD PALIN AND ENCOURAGE HIM THAT FOR WILLOW'S 15TH BIRTHDAY HE OUGHT TO PUNCH HER 6 TIMES IN THE JAW THROW HER DOWN A FLIGHT OF STAIRS, BREAK HER VIRGINITY AND MAKE SARAH VERY HAPPY AND PROUD. YOU'RE A SICK F**KING BRAIN-DEAD. MENTAL CASE.

Again, you halfwits seem to think this about self-esteem, that it was a joke about teen pregnancy rather than a joke about sexually assaulting a minor. All four jokes you listed have nothing to do with this. Let's see...

I don't know whether Sarah Palin could really learn a great deal by copying Hillary's command of the substance of politics, simply because I don't think Sarah has either the brains or the temperament to handle the details. However, it is possible Hillary could learn a couple of things by watching Gov Palin. Whatever you think of what Sarah says, she comes across as human. She connects. Hillary doesn't, at least not on a human level. That's why she lost out to Obama in last years primary contest, which people forget was very, very close in the end. A bit of the Palin over-the-counter charm could have given Hillary just the push she needed. She'd be President now.

I still detest Lettermans awful jokes about Palin and either of her daughters, its sexist and wrong. Palin however, still pales in comparison to Hillary. I was and still am an avid supporter of the person who should have been our first female President, Hillary Clinton. She is knowledgeable beyond compare, especially if you want to compare her to Palin. I must have missed the national jokes about Hillary recently, and being as I live in Texas, I would think I would hear them. Instead I hear about what a fantastic Sec of State she is and how glad people are that someone with knowledge, experience and compassion is in that position.
RomeoHotel
The mark of a successful Sec of State (and President) is how other countries -- our friends, our enemies, and the neutrals -- react to us. A President with a successful foreign policy will see our friends elect governments that are friendly to his (as Germany and France did in the Bush years). He will see enemies stop their nuclear programs or end them altogether (as North Korea and Libya did in the Bush years). He will see neutrals adopting more American values of democracy and civilization (as many Arab and other Muslim-majority states did in the Bush years).
A President with an unsuccessful foreign policy will see the opposite: Our friends will elect governments ideologically opposed to his. Our enemies will step up their nuclear weapons programs. The neutrals will end military basing arrangements with us and thumb their noses at our democratic values.
Thus far, the scoreboard for Obama and Hillary in foreign policy doesn't look favorable -- neither to them, nor to us.

I think a good picture of female power comes from the preceeding day when Governor Palin was in Texas getting Exxon/Mobil to sign on to her pipeline project. She's pictured with the President of Exxon Mobil Production Company and the President and CEO of TransCanada Corporation, concluding a deal to be part of the largest infrastructure project in history. That's a real accomplishment. The talk show interviews were primarily about this announcement but she did respond when asked about Letterman.

I don't think Hillary is looking diminished, I think she is getting older, she must be around 20 years older than Sarah Palin, maybe that is why McCain picked Sarah Palin to be his running mate, he may have felt even more diminished.
I would think that he didn't realize how unsophisticated she would appear to be. But people in rural towns, if society did crumble, the way it appears to be doing, would probably survive, and there would be a huge issue between private and public property, and I would think guns would be coming out, and I guess there could be even a civil war. In rural areas there is not much public property, the way there is in urban areas, it makes a huge difference. That is why it often doesn't matter what you know in rural areas to be successful, the way it does in urban areas, because it is really about who you know. I think there is a divide between the rural and urban.
Even the religion issue, that defines your social group in a rural area, big time. It is not even about religion. Sort of the way mental health is used in urban areas to define people, it is not really about mental health either, it is about social status, and whether you have a place to sleep and eat properly to maintain an ability to think. It is possible there is no God and no mental illness.
Now they are talking about bulldozing poor neighbourhoods, that will be mostly an urban issue. But these are real issues. Politics should be dealing with issues not personalities. In rural areas it is often about personalities. Sarah Palin has that down pact. And such a joke would be a lot more offensive to a woman in a rural area, where life can be alot more brutal. Well look at having to pay for your rape kit. At first I thought that was a joke, until I realized it was true. That is pretty awful.

Wow, a well-written and thoughtful comment. Kudos!
The only thing I would "correct" is the business about "forcing women to pay for their rape kits". This occurred while Palin was mayor of Wasilla. It is my understanding that the city's police chief -- purely as part of a budgetary argument over whether rape kits should be paid for out of his department's budget or the general state budget -- omitted the line item from his proposed budget. Palin apparently wasn't even informed of the dispute over payment when she signed off on the police chief's budget. We can argue that she should have been informed on this issue and that she should have ensured that the rape kits were government-paid, regardless of "which budget pays for it". But Palin's opponents make it sound as though she went line-by-line through the police chief's budget and, finding the budget for rape kits, she personally removed it from the budget. This was not the case.
Again, overall, a wonderfully balanced and thoughtful comment!
spinozareader
I still think that the ultimate responsibility for the removal of the rape kits from the budget was hers to claim--Wasilla's simply not big enough for her to claim she shouldn't have done the line-by-line exam of the police chief's budget. Furthermore, she ought to have championed the undoing this policy--and her ultimate responsibility for remedying the unjustice of it--once she became aware of it. Did she??
possumdearie
Charles Martin has a list of Palin rumors, smears and outright lies. His version is that the Chief of Police in Wasilla (not Palin) did apparently have a policy of asking a victim's health insurance to pay for the rape kit as part of the ER visit. This, it turns out, is policy in a number of states, including Missouri and North Carolina. The way this became an issue was after the then-governor of Alaska signed a bill forbidding it; this law was signed before Palin was Governor and no one tried to reverse it while she was Governor. Third, what the CoP in Wasilla wanted to do was charge the perpetrator as part of restitution.

Hmm ... let's see how this works.
Letterman jokes about the Palin's daughter twice in a crude and disgusting manner while Todd, Sarah and Willow Palin are in New York doing some good works.
The Palin family issues a statement condemning what Letterman said. Letterman issues a non-apology.
The next week, Governor Palin is then in Texas to announce that Exxon Mobil has agreed to join Trans Canada Pipeline in proceeding with the construction of the planned natural gas pipeline from Alaska to the lower 48.
Tina, you know about that, right?
No, well then read this editorial in Friday's Investment Business Daily Editorial:
Pipeline, Not Pipe Dream: Credit Palin
http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=329698559684271
How does the media play it?
During the follow up interviews on the Today Show and the Situation Room, what does the media focus on?
Instead of the huge announcement of Mobil Exxon's agreement to participate in the pipeline project:
- that has a total estimated cost 26 billion dollars
- with a planned completion date of 2018
- that will lead to thousands of construction jobs and significant spin off benefits
- while helping to satisfy America's growing need for natural gas
The media focuses on Letterman's crude jokes and the interviewers ask Governor Palin for a response.
What do women like Tina Brown do with the Governor's call for Letterman to apologize to all young women?
Instead of calling out Letterman for his sexist crudity, after people like Greta Van Susteren raised the clarion call, Tina Brown joins the likes of Arianna Hufington and Margaret Carlson in putting down Governor Palin.
In reality, Ms. Brown, your piece ends up supporting this line of attack:
"Sarah brought this on herself. If she'd never taken a leadership role, her children would have been safe from our repulsive attacks. Because she refuses to cower under the shadow of our mockery and hate...she can only blame herself if we seek to destroy her family."
Wonderful to watch as Ms. Brown feeds into the hate mongering.
I mean lets all go along with the show.
Come one and all, let's gang up on Governor Palin. Well, I for one, say No. Stop. Enough.
Enough with the goon attacks that want to play off Governor Palin's star power.
Enough with the goon attacks when it is self evident that Letterman is a "blankity, blank" who deserves a proverbial swift kick in the you know what to make the point that every male needs to understand.
Leave the children of political figures alone. Stop putting down girls and young women in undeservedly treating them as objects of ridicule, scorn or as sex objects.
Instead how about we focus on the significance of Mobil Exon signing onto the Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline Project earlier this week.
A project that Governor Palin deserves full credit in bringing to fruition.
A project that involves private investments of over 26 billion dollars.
A project that will create thousands of construction jobs, not counting the huge spin off benefits.
A project that will help secure America's future energy needs in an enviromentally friendly fashion.
A project that requires a huge amount of savvy, personal skills, determination, guts, intelligence and common sense to pull off.
A project which shows clear leadership ability.
How about we applaud these achievements.
But instead, what do you do Ms. Brown?
Join in the fun and bash Palin some more, because the media elites think the Governor needs to .. whatever ... because the elites think you know better.
In the face of the initial media storm - to paraphrase what Governor Palin said so well last September during her acceptance speech: -
"Here's a little news flash, I am not going to Washington to please the media elites, I am going to Washington to serve the American people."
Next time Tina, have some advice or guidance, send Sarah an email, a letter, or place a phone call.
But don't join the goons in publicly attacking Sarah while ignoring the true story.
Don't use the guise of giving her so called guidance, when in reality all you are doing is playing off her star power to enhance your position as a "pundit."
Now presuming your comments were meant in good faith, (which I sincerely doubt, because your piece makes no mention of the reason why Sarah was in New York and Texas when this whole Letterman story blew up), to repeat ... stop with the public attacks ... it serves no good, because in the media blur ... your comments are not distinguishable from those of the goons ...

And we should also tap more of our substantial natural gas reserves and work with the Canadian government to finally build the Alaska natural gas pipeline, delivering clean natural gas and creating good jobs in the process."
Governor Sarah Palin today responded to the energy plan PUT FORWARD by the presumptive Democratic nominee for President, Illinois Senator Barack Obama.
"I am pleased to see Senator Obama acknowledge the huge potential Alaska's natural gas reserves represent in terms of clean energy and sound jobs," Governor Palin said. "The steps taken by the Alaska State Legislature this past week demonstrate that we are ready, willing and able to supply the energy our nation needs." Complete BS. So now the level of sexism in this country has sunk to such a low that if a woman (politics bedamned) is angry over dangerously ugly jokes made about her 14 year old daughter she is battered by the press. Tina, I hope you don't call yourself a feminist.
scott1607
It was an ugly joke in poor taste. Dangerous, though? That's a reach, isn't it? The most sensible response is to ask for an apology (actually the most sensible response is to not respond at all and move on with life). Going in hysterics and a "save the children" mode is ignorant. I think Palin's daughter is more "victimized" by the cynical reactions of her mother and all the airtime she's getting over the issue. My god, what's next? Therapy for the poor girl so she can get over the horrible life-scarring mental anguish from this dangerous and deadly joke?
TennDem
Yes, turning young girls into sexualized jokes is dangerous. And OF COURSE you would respond with the stereotypical charges of "hysterics" -- how oinker of you.
lukeliberty
Rape is not an ugly joke in poor taste. A weaselly and huffy non-apology is an ugly joke in poor taste.

Wanting, even in Kentucky, 14 YO is below the age of consent. It's not sex but rape. It's not a joke, it's te kind of trash we expect from guttersnipes like yourself. "Wanting" (class, decency and common sense!)
Ritarita
For God's sake possum-
Nobody said RAPE
Until Palin said RAPE.
If you want to randomly inject terms
Into the argument-
Why not BANK ROBBERY?
Defend her daughters because
Letterman said they were BANK ROBBERS.
Of course Dave didn't say that.
Neither did he say the word RAPE.
possumdearie
It's statutory rape when the girl is 14 YO, because there's no such thing as consensual sex where children are involved. 14 YO is a minor, and it's RAPE.
connie47
Dangerous? Dangerous is throwing out enough meat to a crowd to provoke calls of, "Kill him, kill him." Doing all this while your children are on the stage watching and listening is another issue.
fran20
That never happened--get your facts straight. The Secret Service, who were present throughout the audience, said it never happened. These continual lies and distortion about Palin are repeated ceaselessly, and they are just as bad as the right wing rhetoric the Left loves to rail against. Two sides of the same coin. "Liberals" have revealed themselves to be just as intolerant and hateful as the Right can be. Congratulations for all that "open-mindedness."
Ritarita
Fran-
If that 'never happened'
We've all been watching some
Pretty spooky file film.
This is 2009.
You can't get away with willful denial
Anymore.
EVERYTHING is documented
I saw it we all saw it.
You can see it too.
Try the Google.
connie47
Sorry, frannie, but the Secret Service statement to which you refer was a PA rally and it was not Palin talking, but Chris Hackett. This is NOT one of the videotaped events, where it did happen. This is one person saying it happened and a SS agent, who was there, saying he didn't hear it.
Your statement is accurate with respect to that one incident only.
akcita
Fran is right.
http://www2.tbo.com/content/2008/oct/10/na-kill-him-reports-being-probe d/
The Clearwater Rally also had only one person that heard it, a reporter, just like the the PA rally. Interesting.

You are fooling yourself. It did happen. Please see the snippets of some of these pernicious shout-outs that occurred at some of Sara Palin's "rallies" in the lead-up to the 2008 election. Shameful stuff, irrespective of where you fall on the political spectrum.
Ritarita
Akcita-
Fran is way wrong.
dcbooknurse
The whole point is that the jokes WEREN'T made about her 14-year-old daughter. Letterman didn't say that A-Rod knocked up Willow, he made a joke that "Palin's daughter" got knocked up. I think everyone knew he was referring to Bristol. It was Palin who came out and insisted that Willow was the target of the jokes. Even after Letterman came on camera and publicly stated that the jokes were about Bristol and that he would never make jokes about raping or having sex with a 14 year-old, Palin got right back on the air and insisted that of COURSE the jokes were about Willow and that Letterman owed young girls everywhere an apology, Palin is deliberately misinterpreting the situation to get more media coverage and she is the one exploiting her younger daughter for political gain.
Ritarita
And of course
It was Gov.Palin who injected
The word rape
Into the argument for dramatic effect.
WonderDog
She knows the jokes were made about Bristol. After all, it's Bristol's idiotic expression that greets me every time I visit the checkout stand at the grocery store. It's Bristol's dumb visage that is on television babbling nonsense about her baby simultaneously being the most wonderful thing ever and the ruination of life as we know it. It's Bristol's empty head that scored a plum job preventing teen pregnancy, a job that will perhaps close the stable door by keeping her away from the boys she knows in Alaska.
Did anyone else notice that on the Letterman clip, Silly Palin the Elder referred to the President as "the Candidate Who Must Be Obeyed"? I did, and had the following thoughts about it:
1) he's no longer a candidate, candypants.
2) I would have thought familiarity with Harry Potter books to be a sin amongst the Palin churchy crowd. After all, they *cure* witchcraft.
3) Who among Palin's paid jokesters is bright enough to make an Obey / Shepard Fairey reference.
fran20
What DIFFERENCE does it make if it was a 14 year old or an 18 year old?! Has this country become so incredibly numb that jokes about violating young women is now justified? And for all the apologists who do not understand the connection between attitudes toward women and abuse, please "study up and shut up." Domestic violence is alive and well in this country, and there are still honor killings, stonings, and sexual trafficking around the world. This kind of rationalization from women like Tina Brown is appaling, and I am a long-time Liberal. We saw this same kind of "shut up" thrown at Hillary too, but since she is being a "good submissive" now, it's all ok I guess. Disgusting.
akcita
The context of the joke was focused on the daughter that was at the baseball game (Willow). I think Letterman's Ivy League writers are smart enough to know this.Your own apologist attitude is quite deluded and self-serving. Go ahead and believe what you will and forgive what you will, and remember it can happen to your daughter and don't be outraged then.
Kingsfold
Hear, hear, Fran.
jenny4hill
fran20: The joke (lame as it was) was about getting knocked up - not being violated. From all that is known, Bristol Palin was a willing partner in her knocking up. I agree with your points about domestic violence etc. but they're out of place in this context, and the context suggests you're falling for Sarah Palin's junior-varsity attempt at making a publicity mountain out of a par-for-the-course late nite drivel molehill.
In Sarah's self-centered media splurge, she is cynically playing the victim when it isn't justified, and thereby undermining and diminishing the very real plight of women and girls who truly are victims of domestic abuse and sexist attacks.
One of Tina Brown's points is that, if Sarah Palin wants power (as clearly she does), she needs to learn how powerful women comport themselves. Playing the victim and manufacturing ridiculous, petty battles in the media for personal exposure are not worthy of herself, and are not constructive for women and girls who have all-too-few positive, serious, charismatic and powerful women on the public stage at a national level.
eurydice9276
No, jenny4hill, Palin does not need to "learn how powerful women comport themselves." She does not need to be put into a box of someone else's choosing, especially a box created by a political enemy. She should do exactly what she's doing now, being herself. She'll either look like an idiot or she won't - people will either buy her story or they won't.

Letterman said Palin's daughter was knocked up by A-Rod in the 7th inning. Which daughter was at the game? The 14 YO. Duh.
possumdearie
Because
It is rape
When a 14YO
Is involved

Bristol Palin was in Alaska with her baby at the time. How did she allegedly transport herself to Yankees stadium in order to serve as Dave's punchline? You people are reaching.
akcita
Letterman shouldn't have a show. He's to stupid to recognize that when you joke a bout a person being in New York, people won't realize you were actually joking about the person in Alaska!
Apparently, most of this blog follows his reasoning though. Next thing you'll tell me you can spend your way out of debt right?
You guys are sooooo deep.....

Well, stupid, he was reporting on news. It was an anecdote. "Gov. Palin was at the game with her daughter." Well, it was the 14 YO daughter, you skank.
bgeasyas123
Well possum, you would have a point, except Letterman is not the anchor of the CBS evening news but the host of the late show. It was joke, too bad you can't take it.

The US Supreme Court defined slander as:
"... slander ... may be divided into five classes, as follows: (1.) Words falsely spoken of a person which impute to the party the commission of some criminal offence involving moral turpitude, for which the party, if the charge is true, may be indicted and punished. (2.) Words falsely spoken of a person which impute that the party is infected with some contagious disease, where, if the charge is true, it would exclude the party from society; or (3.) Defamatory words falsely spoken of a person, which impute to the party unfitness to perform the duties of an office or employment of profit, or the want of integrity in the discharge of the duties of such an office or employment. (4.) Defamatory words falsely spoken of a party which prejudice such party in his or her profession or trade. (5.) Defamatory words falsely spoken of a person, which, though not in themselves actionable, occasion the party special damage.
"Certain words, all admit, are in themselves actionable, because the natural consequence of what they impute to the party is damage, as if they import a charge that the party has been guilty of a criminal offence involving moral turpitude, or that the party is infected with a contagious distemper, or if they are prejudicial in a pecuniary sense to a person in office or to a person engaged as a livelihood in a profession or trade; but in all other cases the party who brings an action for words must show the damage he or she has suffered by the false speaking of the other party."
Even Jon Stewart can't get past that definition of slander. Whether you put on a red, rubber nose and say it in public or say it behind the news desk of a network broadcast, if you defame somebody's character, it is slander.

TennDem i'm just really curious. Do you know that other late-nite comics many the same act jokes in reference to her daughters being "raped"? Jay Leno, the very next day after McCain nominated her said "Gov. Palin announced over the weekend that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant. And you thought John Edwards was in trouble before! Now he has really done it." -- "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," 9/2/08
NOW ISN'T THAT THE SAME EXACT JOKE THAT LETTERMAN SAID? ONLY THINGS DIFFERENT IS THE "RAPIST" AND LENO DID MENTION THE 17 YR OLD. LETTERMAN SAID AROD, LENO SAID SENATOR EDWARDS. BOTH GROWN MEN OVER 30
CONAN OBRIEN ON FEBRUARY '09 SAID . "Sarah Palin is going to drop the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers' hockey game. Then Palin will spend the rest of the game trying to keep the hockey players out of her daughter's penalty box." --Conan O'Brien. **** NOW CONAN ALSO MENTIONS ONLY THE WORD DAUGHTER. THE GOVERNOR TOOK WILLOW AND PIPER TO THAT GAME. WILLOW AT THE TIME WAS 13 AND PIPER 6 YRS OLD. SO ARE WE TO SAY THAT CONAN WAS REFERRING TO THE 6 YR OLD AND NOT WILLOW OR BRISTOL? IF SO, THEN YOU'RE JUST AS MUCH OF A HYPOCRITE AS SARAH.
hrtshpdbox
Every time people see Palin speaking on TV it reminds them that she's not the idiot that the media would like to portray her as; she's poised and likable. And she's right to be outraged, of course, and there's no question that Letterman's is indeed "crude, sexist and perverted". But the article is right about one thing; Palin needs to not over-play the victim card here - that kind of nonsense should be reserved for left-wingers. Better just to point out that Letterman's jokes are lame, and leave it at that.
zan1960
Does your TV have subtitles, because everytime I see her on TV it reinforces my opinion that she is in way over her head. I'll giver her this, she is a master at stirring up resentment and hate and plays the victim card like a violin, I'm not sure how that translates into leadership.

Wholeheartedly agree w/ hrtshpdbox. I also agree with the second part of the main article. Sarah needs to spend her time getting substance right now instead of mouthing off. She came on the scene a very impressive person, but is actually going downhill because of all the shooting from the hip on largely meaningless stuff.
p4poetic
This whole comment is a contradiction.
You're blaming the media for the general view of Palin being an idiot. People came to that conclusion just by watching her speak in interviews alone. Obviously you never saw it that way [when you see her speak on TV] like most people do.
So its the media's fault. Is that not playing the victim?
innovations
You think Palin reminds us that she's NOT the idiot that the media would like to portray?? She uses the troops in the middle east to gain sympathy on a joke that has been said by every late-night host. I'm sure you've seen them all over these posts about bristol's baby father being John Edwards, a hockey team, etc.. "We have the right to express our reaction. This is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America's Right to Free Speech"---GIMME A BREAK. I DIDN'T KNOW OUR RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH WAS TAKEN AWAY THE THE MIDDLE EAST.
Here's a nice one, ata fundraiser she says:
"We believe that the best of America is in these small towns that we get to visit, and in these wonderful little pockets of what I call the real America, being here with all of you hardworking, very patriotic, um, very, um, pro-America areas of this great nation."
Palin later apologized for the statement. The funny thing is, there were no Dem's making a fuss about it. There was no Hillary Clinton going nationwide on this. We're too civil for that. But just for the record, how would conservatives have reacted if, in an attempt to pander to liberals, Obama said "I love visiting the parts of the country where people aren't close-minded assholes"? Probably not well.
TheRamblingExpatriate
Excellent commentary. If only Palin would read it.
She is proof the old adages are no longer true in this changing media environment. No more is it true that "any publicity is good publicity." The internet has changed this forever.
Thank you.
