Palin vs. Biden 2016

BS Top - McKinnon Biden Palin J. Scott Applewhite / AP Photo In the third of a series on the 2012 landscape, former Bush and McCain strategist Mark McKinnon says Palin is getting stronger by the day—and will be ready to take on the Obama agenda (or his vice president) in three years or seven.

Sarah Palin vs. Joe Biden in 2016. You heard it here first.

And really, what could be more entertaining?

Joe Biden, because God bless him, he just can’t help himself, has made clear that he could very possibly be a candidate for president in 2016. So, poof, gone in a typically Bidenesque unguarded moment is any pretense of pure loyalty to his current boss. Joltin’ Joe has one agenda: himself. No matter what he says or does now, we know because he told us so, when he’s in Oval Office meetings he’s really thinking about the color of the carpet he plans to put in. Got to give the guy points for candor. And you just know that he thinks he should be in the big chair now, but he’s doing the country a service by lowering himself a notch to help out the new kid.

The best way to hurt Letterman is to ignore him. And he deserves to be ignored.

And God bless Sarah Palin. What would we do without her for entertainment? She’s our very own political reality show. An American Political Idol finalist. She’s like watching a moose on roller skates. Never graceful. Always riveting.

Yet, despite buckets of criticism constantly flung her way, she’s got a lot going for her. Just like George W. Bush, people and the media constantly “misunderestimate” her. No matter what you think about her politics, this woman is tenacious, fearless, and savvy. John McCain’s former chief of staff, Mark Salter, said it best: “What she knows, you can’t teach. And what she doesn’t know, she can learn.”

She got thrown in the deep end before she could swim. As my friend Stuart Stevens said, “It was like picking someone of the street and telling them they had to take the MCATs the next day.” But, she dog-paddled furiously, thrashed about, made a lot of waves, and managed not to drown. And now she’s got her water wings. And she’s working on her strokes. And by 2012 or 2016, she’ll be a lot stronger.

It you need evidence, check out her appearance Friday with Wolf Blitzer. I disagree with my friend and sponsor Tina Brown on this subject. I think Palin knocked it out of the park. It was a long and substantive interview. Kudos to Blitzer and CNN for giving her a full 15 minutes of airtime. And she more than held her own. Talked about a natural gas-pipeline deal that is good a deal and smart politics. Talked about Obamanomics. And laid a pretty good beating on David Letterman.

Letterman has been employing as part of his defense that his very bad joke was aimed at Palin’s older, 18-year-old daughter Bristol, not her 14-year-old, Willow. As if this somehow justifies his egregiously poor judgment. But as Palin pointed out, she attended the Yankees game with Willow.

And surely his joke writers read about their attendance at the game. How else would they have thought of the joke. So they had to know it was Willow. Or, at least they certainly should have. Ignorance is a lousy excuse.

My initial reflex on this issue was wrong. As a former journalist who was once jailed on a First Amendment issue (defending an Iranian’s right to protest in Texas!), I always lean toward defending anyone’s right to say whatever stupid thing they want to say. And pay the consequences of the market. In this case, viewers. Letterman’s joke was crude and inappropriate, but my fear was that the Republican right wing would make too big a deal out of it, thereby achieving Letterman’s end game: attention, and consequently, eyeballs. I still think calling him a pervert or a pederast just lowers Palin to his level. The best way to hurt Letterman is to ignore him.

And he deserves to be ignored. He is a mean, petty, bitter guy. Over the years working with candidates, I’ve dealt with late-night shows a lot. And there is a definite spectrum. On one side, you have Jay Leno, who treated guests with total professionalism and respect. Jay would always come to the green room and personally meet the guest and make sure they were comfortable and at ease. Always brought flowers for female guests or companions. Letterman, on the other hand, was consistently rude. He acts like he’s doing you a big favor have you on the show. He never greets guests before the show. Likes putting the freeze on them (the green room is frigid and spare) so you walk out cold and he always has the advantage.

But at the end of the day on this one, score one for Palin. She looks like a good and righteous mom defending her kids and Letterman looks like the cruel punk that he is.

She’s getting stronger. And when asked by Blitzer about her plans for reelection as governor in 2010 or about a run for president in 2012, Palin demurred. Whatever she decides, she’s going to be a player. She could get reelected and still run in 2012. Or, she could get reelected and not run in 2012, but go out and be a celebrity on the circuit supporting the nominee and earn a lot of points for 2016 (assuming the Republicans lose in 2012, a pretty good bet right now). Or she may not run for reelection and load up for 2012. But, my bet is that whatever she decides, she’ll be on the stage in 2016. And by then, she’ll be a lot stronger. And by the Salter theorum, she will have learned a lot.

And despite his shortcomings, by 2016, Joe Biden will have locked up all the natural advantages any vice president has running for president.

Sara “Cuda” vs. Joe “the (bloviating) Volcano”. Oh man, get me a front-row seat.

What makes you think that Hillary isn't going to run in 2016? I like Sarah but don't agree with her on most issues. If Sarah plans to run for POTUS in 2012/2016 she has a long way to go to be ready.

Palin knows in her heart
That the GOP will not back her
In a Presidential bid.
She's using every opportunity in
The spotlight for face time and money.
Her book will be coming out and she'll no doubt
Realize some financial kickbacks if the
Pipeline deal goes through.
She's also through with governing
And is now using her time
For celebrity and financial gain.
Basically she's done and she knows it.

Why is that the Republicans have lost the ability to nominate and elect a president that is at his or her core a true leader? Their last real hope was John McCain's who's candidacy was destroyed by those special interests within the party who believed that McCain might not tow the line. The mere fact that Sarah Palin is considered to be a serious contender for the job is completely ludicrous. The only reason for this has to be that there is just no one else. And that is a sad state of affairs.

"And what she doesn't know, she can learn." What incredible bullshit. She has already proved that she either can't or won't learn anything. She has been on the national stage for 9 months, now, and she has had her ass handed to her in critical interviews that revealed how little she knew about politics and the world around her.

You would think she would buckle down and get up to speed, but she hasn't done it. Her own campaign staff complained that she wouldn't sit down long enough to prepare for anything, and it's obvious when you hear her speak.

She's a bullshitter, pure and simple. She strings together talking points and slogans. You can spot these kind of people a mile away. If she hasn't got her mind wrapped around historical and political facts right now, she won't in 2012, either.

So Letterman telling a bad joke is worse than say Palin spouting her vitriol about Obama "Palling" around with terrorists? Why is it that the Conservatives can dish it out but cant take it?. :Letterman's ratings are currently the highest for late night and that was BEFORE the Palin joke. Letterman is funny but because he leans liberal is considered "bitter" & "Cruel" by Mr Kinnon and his conservative ilk, you conservatives can spew hateful garbage 24/7 and it does not seem to bother you, unless it is directed @ you.

If Palin cannot deal with Letterman who would she deal with any real responsibility.

Plain is a rube, if this is what the G.O.P. is banking on to get back the white house then just short of total catastrophe by Obama, the G.O.P. will be in the wilderness for years to come.

So Plain is "Good Looking", so what else does she offer?. And assuming another one of her kids does not have a child out of wedlock ( or she does not have another child ) will there be more dirt of this woman in 4 to 8 years, you bet. What if Alaskans do not keep her in office?. If her fellow Moose hunters cant stand her then the rest of the country sure as heck wont give her the white house.

Is this all that is left of the G.O.P., Palin, Limbaugh, Newt.....

Sad indeed.

Bill Ayres never hurt anyone. Never wanted to hurt anyone. Not saying what he did was right, but not one single innocent person ever died in Weather Underground attacks. They went out of their way to make sure of that.

If he's the scariest connection the Right has on Obama, then Barack is clean as a whistle.

Palin's hate-speech will be the death of her political career. I'm reading RENEGADE right now and find it to be too sycophantic at not at all up to THE MAKING OF A PRESIDENT..

The point is that Governor Palin hasn't the character or the smarts to move out of Wasilia. She is the Peter Principle personified. I hate to think that Letterman blew his wad on a dumb joke about Palin allowing her daughter and ex-boyfriend sleep together at home. A better shot would be to coin a female version of the Peter Principle.

|
6:23 pm, Jun 15, 2009

There is no evidence of "palling around" between Obama and Ayers. "Palling around" made a catchy phrase, but it didn't happen that way. And you're exaggerating on Ayers' past. You are reading right-wing Web sites instead of history.

|
9:02 pm, Jun 15, 2009

How do you define "paling around with," if you care to do so. Do you mean being chosen by Mayor Daley to sit on a board with Ayers (given the Citizen of the Year Award in Chicago) regarding education in poor city schools? The sweeping vague statement is a huge part of propaganda techniques and so much better than the facts of what happened.

Seriously though, I have enough faith in America that I'm pretty sure we've learned our "don't elect retards" lesson after Bush and if she runs she will lose badly.

Also in 2016 I look forward to the most interesting and exciting primary ever. Michelle vs Hillary, the battle of the first ladies. It would be great and my money is heavily on Michelle.

Michelle is a smart woman however I don't think she'd run for president, that's pushing it. Hillary on the other hand, with a possible 8 years of being The Secretary of State and all these recent crises and future crises under her belt she becomes a political heavy-weight even moreso than she was pre '08. If she's still interested and nothing ~bad~ happens from now until '16 I'd say Hillary is a shoo-in for the democratic presidential nominee, if not presidency.

Ok, one Palin v. Biden - I don't think it's ever gonna happen...so stop with your wishful thinking Mark.

Two, Biden might be a bloviating Volcano, but at the least he can make coherent sentences. Can you imagine Palin being president after Obama? That'd be like listening to Coltrane or Miles followed by Hannah Montana.

All her arguments have no basis in facts. She is just passionate like all fanatics and zealots are. The validity of the things she laments on exists in her pitiful mind...and in the crotches of the Republican men.

So Palin had an "ok" interview for once where she didn't come across as total babeling loon. And maybe she knows a thing or two about all things oil and gas related. But paleeeease give me a break on 2016. She has a very limited capacity for most other issues and most Americans are smart enough to know that. By 2016 most people will remember her like we all remember Ross Perot today..... as a character in a great SNL parody.

If you're a journalist ... what exactly is this about? You advertise it and begin it like a Biden v. Palin article, take a few extremely mild hits at Palin for "objectivity," and then launch into a Go-Palin-Go marathon.

As for the substance, where exactly is it? The Palin I saw in the Blitzer interview looked just as uneducated and naive as the one from the campaign. The Letterman thing is a joke, as you well know but willfully ignore, and other writers (SNL, Leno, Conan, EVERYONE) have made much worse jokes about the Palin family without any sort of outrage. This just happened to be a slow news week for her and so she took the opportunity to stir something up.

She's pathetic and so is this piece of "journalism." The title would be more well suited if it just read "Palin 2012/16."

Did anyone miss that a GOP S. Carolina heavyweight called Michelle Obama (jokingly) a monkey.

Regardless, the GOP kingmakers or queenmakers are bigger star fuckers than the superficial dems.

Very curious piece, but glad to see you are jumping on the desperate bandwagon with the Letterman thing. You are one of the few (formerly?) valid voices for the Republicans. Continue down this road, and you will definitely be yet another thing that the Democrats don't have to worry about.

Why do leftists always bring up the "palling around with domestic terrorists" comment. Obama WAS palling around with domestic terrorists, and any other candidate who didn't have the privileges that Obama had during the campaign would have been out of the running just for that. There is no question Bill Ayers was a member of the Weather Underground. He built bombs, blew up statues, buildings. Two of his close cohorts blew themselves up concocting homemade bombs. He has never attempted to make amends for his terrorist activities in his past. Canada recently denied him entry into their country because of his violent past.

Me, neither. I thought Biden would be named Sec. of State, since he had spent so much time on the Foreign Relations Committee. It was, I suppose, political expediency, since he's a white male and the voters wouldn't have been as receptive to a black/female ticket. The 2010 elections will probably tell the tale as to will win the 2012 Presidential election.
