The Oscars of Fashion

At last night's glamorous CFDA awards, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren, and Rodarte won top honors, while Michelle Obama received a special tribute. View photos from the red carpet.

Though not as well-known (read: not televised) as the Oscars, the CFDA/Swarovski Awards are the fashion community’s biggest event of the year—where new talent is crowned, old talent is honored, stars come out in couture, Anna Wintour sneaks past photographers in sunglasses, and inevitably, Betsey Johnson prances around the red carpet in something frilly (this year it was pink satin and black lace).

This year’s awards, hosted as always by CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg—who stood at the entrance and greeted each guest individually as they arrived, the consummate hostess—offered some surprises. Sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy won Womenswear Designers of the Year for their line, Rodarte, a real treat, as the women had been nominated twice before without a win. Ralph Lauren took home the first ever “People’s Vote” award, a prize crowdsourced over the Internet, American Idol style. Bright young thing Alexander Wang won the emerging Swarovski Award for Womenswear, beating out Michelle Obama favorites Thakoon and Jason Wu, and the boys of Proenza Schouler won for their accessories line. The Menswear of the Year category offered a bit of drama: Italo Zucchelli of Calvin Klein and Scott Sternberg and Band of Outsiders tied. And then there were the actresses—Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes, Diane Kruger, Blake Lively—who showed up to support fashion...and let’s face it, to have a chance to look amazing at the scene-iest style event of the year.

Some really questionable gowns! But so often the case at big fashion events. My vote goes to Jack White for best dressed.

Kirsten Dunst looks like she was just in an accident with bandages, black eyes and all.

Why doesn't anyone do anything interesting (and accessible to normal income peeps?) like the year when Sharon S. wore a GAP t-shirt (think was an Oscar night)?
