Tips From One D.C. Scandal Girl to Another

BS Top - Cutler Ensign Susan Walsh / AP Photo As Senator Ensign’s paramour prepares to tell all, Jessica Cutler—The Washingtonienne, aka the former sex blogger who was outed for her own D.C. affair—offers tips on how to transform the infamy into a new career.

As the latest sex scandalette on the political scene, Cynthia Hampton could use some advice from someone who has been there herself.

I don't worry so much about Senator John Ensign, because he willingly chose public life. Not that Cynthia Hampton was innocent in this situation, either. But I'm sure she never imagined she would find herself under as much stress and scrutiny as she is feeling right now.

Start a Playboy rumor. And a book-deal rumor, while you’re at it. You can always say, “Whatever, people may think I’m a whore, but at least I’m a published whore.”

No one is ever prepared to get caught in a sex scandal. I'm not talking about the publicity-stunt variety, which is more of a Hollywood or New York device. In politics, a sex scandal is almost never considered a smart career move. They can be the political equivalent of box-office poison—unless you spin it in your favor. Here's how.

Just admit it.
If you confess your wrongdoings, no one can hold them against you. Otherwise, you are a target for exposure and/or blackmail, which seems to be the case in this most recent scandal. Both Ensign and Hampton have already issued statements to the press admitting to the affair. So far, so good. But what about the people blackmailing them? Everyone wants to know more about Cynthia and, more specifically, if she's hot. The casual observer isn't thinking about what scumbags the extortionists are. They're too busy calling Ensign a hypocrite and wondering how big Cynthia's boobs are (or is that just me?). Which brings me to the next phase:

Now, get head shots taken.
Or take them yourself and post them somewhere as soon as possible. (Maybe you could start a blog?) Just don't neglect to wear makeup or brush your hair when you go out in public, because you will need as many glamour shots of you as possible to counteract every unflattering photo that will inevitably surface now that you're "famous."

After you've got some hot pics in circulation, start a Playboy rumor.
And a book-deal rumor, while you're at it. Now that your career in politics is over, these may be the only viable ways to earn a living for the next few years. Also, making some money may help you feel better about what is happening right now. You can always say, "Whatever, people may think I'm a whore, but at least I'm a published whore," to comfort yourself whenever you're feeling down.

If the National Enquirer offers you money for an interview, you may as well accept and tell them some "exclusive" (but essentially innocuous) BS. Otherwise, they will make up quotes and publish them anyway, and you'll feel even stupider than you probably do already. While we're on the subject, you shouldn't be giving any interviews or posing for photographs for free. (Not until you have to do promo for the book.) And never sign a photo waiver or release form. (Unless it's for Playboy.)

Also: Disconnect your chatty grandparent's telephone immediately.
You don't want reporters calling their house (they will) and taking advantage of an elderly person who doesn't know any better. You need to circle the wagons. Tell your family to be prepared for the possibility of camera crews on their front lawns. The only thing any friend or family member should be saying about you is "No comment."

Don't forget to see a doctor.
This is not a time for cracking up or letting yourself go. Get a check up and keep yourself healthy. And seeing a psychiatrist can't hurt, either. They will help you put the situation into perspective—and give you meds that will help you not give a damn.

If all else fails, you can always change your name, move to Florida, and start over. But why should you? In a few years, no one will remember any of this. Another sex scandal will come along, wiping out all public memory of you. Take me, for example: Jessica Cutler never became a household name. And Cynthia Hampton doesn't have to become one, either.

But in your household, you have a husband and family to consider. I did not—I had only myself to worry about at the time. I am now married and starting a family of my own, so that is no longer the case. It just goes to show that life does go on after something like this, for better or for worse. Remember that, and hopefully, your husband will, too.

Jessica Cutler is author of The Washingtonienne: A Novel, by Hyperion Books. She has also written for the Guardian, the Washington Post, Playgirl, Capitol File, and Wonkette.

"Whatever, people may think I'm a whore, but at least I'm a published whore"

I feel sad that this is an acceptable mindset to encourage in anyone, especialyl young women in Washington. This attitude reinforces the belief that women can only go to the seat of government to be sex toys for politicians, or that to ascend to any position in government means assuming multiple positions in some Congressman's bedroom.

well thus far the main difference between cutler and hampton is that cutler is actually a whore, as in a woman who was paid to have sex, whereas hampton is just an adulterer. That is unless there are more revelations to come.

Actually Hampton is a whore, her salary more than doubled after she started putting out, and her teenage son got put on the payroll as a "consultant". The only difference is that Cutler is honest about it, and Hampton is your typical Republican who thinks her s**t don't stink!

I think the statement, though, isn't necessarily so much towards encouraging whorish behavior as it is about trying to find some dignity in the whole messy aftermath. This is not to say it's a good attitude in general -- and it certainly goes to show how the media rewards scandal even as it makes a show of condemning it -- but at least it would give a ruined woman the satisfaction of still looking successful in the face an overwhelming majority of critics.

This is, at least, the sympathetic answer...

Who still thinks this? Please do tell us more about this phenomenon of people believing that "women can only go to the seat of government to be sex toys for politicians, or that to ascend to any position in government means assuming multiple positions in some Congressman's bedroom." Sounds wild!

I think you need to read Tina Brown's piece on Sarah Palin and what she could learn from Hillary Clinton. Sounds like you and
and Ms Hampton could also learn a few things about class and dignity.

But I'm no Hillary Clinton, and Cynthia Hampton is no Sarah Palin. If I was a smarter person, maybe I could have been. Instead, I pose nude and write books with pink covers.

Crass, tacky, hilarious, and oh so true! It's official Jessica you can now run for office because you broke down Washington, DC in a dozen paragraphs. I feel zero sorrow for Ms. Hampton but John Ensign deserved to be outed. Any politician who climbs on their moral high horse is a natural target and deserves to be shot down. You're right, Cynthia will never get a GOP job again so she might as well do the late night circuit and a book--might I suggest a title "En Sin Will Find You Out: The Political Demise of John Ensign and The Woman Who Took Him Down."

Jessica, you are true pond scum. That being said, you have at least been dealing exclusively with your peers. Your husband and children must be very proud!

You're bringing my husband and children (who don't even exist yet) into it? Dealing with my peers is right!

I'm still waiting to find out who K was.

Washingtonienne

In 2004 while a staff assistant for Senator Michael DeWine, Cutler published a short-lived blog called Washingtonienne describing her life in Washington, D.C. which included graphic details of her sex life.

In her blog, Cutler identified her lovers by their initials: "W = married man who pays me for sex. Chief of staff at one of the gov agencies, appointed by Bush."; "K = a sugar daddy who wants nothing but anal. Keep trying to end it with him, but the money is too good"; "RS = my new office BF with whom I am embroiled in an office sex scandal. The current favorite."

At the end of the list, she added: "Shit. I am fucking six guys. Ewwww."[1]

Wow! What a double standard here! So men can pay for sex all they want and have sex with as many people as they want and they're just being men? And nobody asks, "Yuck! His wife is still with him?"

But women who are paid to have sex are tainted, disgusting whores that only a crazy person would marry?

Oh, please! Spare me the Victorian values and misplaced misogynistic logic!

The biggest prostitutes, as we all know, are the people who serve in Congress who sell their votes to the highest corporate bidders. The last time I checked, these congressional prostitutes where primarily men, conservative to moderate in politics, white, old, powerful, Jewish or Christian and primarily from the South and Midwest!

Ms. Cutler and Ms. Hampton don't even register on the sell-out scale compared to our corrupt and hypocritical officeholders. I don't care who they had sex with or whether they were paid for it or not.

And if the ambitious Senator Ensign wasn't such a hypocrite on standards of sexual conduct, I wouldn't think his sex life was news either!

Someone who marries a virgin gets what he/she deserves.

Perhaps, Ms. Cutler, you could help Monica Lewinsky. Its been years and apparently she is still unemployable (and I presume, dateless).

I believe this truly exposes Ms. Cutler's true character- the level at which she exists. This issue is neither left nor right, but she has brought it to a truly new and disgustingly gross low.
I feel so sorry for you, Ms. Cutler- and have the number of several amazing therapists in your area should you choose to avail yourself of their services.
Thank you for setting back women's rights at least 50 years.

By suggesting that I am somehow capable of setting women's rights back 50 years by living my life the way I want to, you are trivializing the women's movement.

I think this essay is more a clever indictment of our mass interest that allows people like her to make money off of the behavior that has destroyed lives and careers.

We the People carry a pretty heavy double-edged sword: we want them cut down and we want to hear and see all the gory details served up on a platter for our entertainment too.

I didn't destroy anyone's life or career that I know of, but I'm glad to see that someone got the point I was trying to make. As much as people would like to participate in a public shaming, it's smart to make money off of it if you can. It's only fair.
