John McCain’s Straight Talk on Torture

John McCain says on Face the Nation that he still believes that an investigation into Bush-era interrogation techniques is a “mistake,” but he also takes issue with Dick Cheney, saying that the techniques used by the CIA not only violated international law, but also helped to recruit new members of al Qaeda.

Maria Shriver: Uncle’s Death Will Help Spur Health-Care Reform

Maria Shriver appeared on Meet the Press, whose entire hour was devoted to Ted Kennedy’s death. Shriver echoed what a number of Democratic politicians and pundits are beginning to say: that when it comes to passing health-care reform, the death of Kennedy may help “get it done.”

Had John McCain been able to muster a response like that in late October, I might have voted for him.

It's astounding that "conservatives" are defending actions (waterboarding) which we convicted foreign nationals such as the Japanese after World War II of doing to American Solders. Should we apologize to Japanese and offer compensation now that waterboading is "NOT" torture after all.

John McLame is yesterday's reruns, time he finds a fertile patch in Sedona, goes the way of other very very old POWs -- The American people spoke loud & clear a year ago, and so will the people of Arizona next time. We have enough RINOs in DC, and they're all in for a very rude surprise real soon. I bet he wants Teddie-Ks old lady in the galery for late night lap dances out of view of C-Span cams. Ol' playboys never die.. they simply shrivel away. Right John-John? Cindy still shacking up with that stud I saw on TMZ? He's writing a book ya know. Writing a book. Yummy.

Riiiight...the GOP faithful are going to drum-out the old guard. Sure, it'll happen - and put in who, fine folk like Michelle Bachmann?

Good for you, Mr. McCain - this is why the American people continue to respect you.

What the $$$$ are Liz Cheney's qualifications and why the hell is she on t.v. every week. "Waterboarding isn't torture...." Reeeaaaallllly? Has she ever done it?

Along those lines, can somebody please tell me why one of the Bush Twins is going to be a correspondent on the Today Show? If I'm an anchor man/woman right now anywhere in the country and I've been grinding away for 5, 10, 15 years in newsrooms all over this country hoping for a Big Break...What the hell am I thinking right now? We do not have Royal Families in this country. Nepotism is a slippery slope......

SlimSoldier got it exactly right. Cheney was a middle level bureaucrat at the State Department when her father, who doubtless got her the job, was (God help us) the Vice President. What makes her an authority on anything? Does anybody really care what she thinks--if she thinks?

Her only current reason for existence seems to be defending her indefensible barbarian of a father. She constantly makes the rounds of the cable and Sunday morning news shows spouting the same tripe. Her "views" are tiresome, predictable and pedantic.

Apparently Stephanopoulis has difficulty getting guests for his "roundtable." Cheney is in the same league with that awful Michelle Malkin (I think that is her name) who was on his show a few weeks ago--arrogant, insulting and abrasive. Please, George, if you can't find a thoughtful conservative without axes to grind, spare us these mindless political hacks--excuse me, "strategists." George Will is more than capable of supplying a thoughtful conservative point a view; the addition of people like Cheney and Malkin do nothing to elevate the quality of your show.

It's really easy to understand: Dick Cheney is Daddy Warbucks and his daughter doesn't want to become Little Orphan Annie!

McCain is certainly - finally - saying what needs to be said. My wish is that Cheney would get humbled by several somebodies saying to him exactly what McCain says here.

when is kerry going to release his complete military records like he's promised 1000 times, maybe more? is it true he's hiding a dishonorable discharge? jimmy carter should know the answer to that! let's ask him between election cycles overseas & that new habitat housing he promotes.

It'd be tough to hide a DD. I mean, I guess it could be done but a DD from Vietnam? Nah. I got it. You disagree with the guy politically but I myself always find it slightly well, disgusting when someone goes after the service record of a Veteran.

Particularly one that served in a Combat Zone and in the manner that Senator Kerry (Despite what T. Boone's million dollar slander said) apparently did. Go after they guy's politics, not his service record. We're better than that.

Of course you would. ANYBODY would love to live the moral/ethics free life of Cheney. Get in line. We have THOUSANDS of people in prision who would. We have recently caught a pedophile who kept a little girl as a sex slave and made 2 children off of her. He LOVES living the morals/ethics free life. So there's nothing special about YOUR wishes.

nick-
You are wrong. He swings his morality to suit the situation. I have personally heard him speak that sanctions are bad as the chief at a major service company AFTER serving with Bush the first wherein he sanctioned countries. Clearly, this 180 degree right turn due to his new 'position' (as in job) and not some great new level of understanding about how hard sanctions are on the local people. Na, this guy's a hypo flapping in the prevailing breeze.

I dont think the current administration needs to revisit this, we have bigger fish to fry, so to speak with the War, recession and keeping Americans safe at home and abroad. Unfortunately as deplorable as I think the previous administrations handling of prisoners was, there were great unknowns driving the behavior when the incidents occurred. Obviously it does not justify inhumane over the edge acts. President Obamas administration needs to take the high ground here, enact new legislation to insure there can be no repeat of these sorts of treatment in the future. No good can possibly come out of a partisan witch hunt unleashed during wartime even when disguised as having good intentions. The risk of comprimising American lives is not worth any percieved benefit. As was once said, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

The greater risk of "compromising American lives " lies in our de facto justification of behavior that would put any potential American captives at much greater risk risk. There may have been "great unknowns", but surely the law and the morality of such actions were not among them. BS on your "higher ground" the higher ground is holding people accountable for their actions. What good would legislation do in restraining persons who do not recognize any sort of moral or ethical boundaries on treatment of another human being?

Cheney's behavior DID compromise American lives. Letting him go is like pretending those lives and OUR laws don't matter.

Without the public option (already half-a-loaf, a crumb), wealthcare reform will be a typhoonfall for the tycoons and stockholders leashed by Wall Street.

Senator Kerry and President Obama and all of us need to say as LBJ did of Medicare, "I will fight for public option as long as I have breath in my body."

And then add:

"Let the Republicans filibluster."

I am amazed that anyone would listen to the former Vice President who has not a clue about reality and is now enjoying the millions he received from Haliburton's no bid contracts in Iraq. Lets have an investigation of him!

DID YOU REALLY HAVE TO GO THERE? On FOX Sunday at the end of the show, there were a couple of letters from viewers about the "death book." It seems they have to go to great lengths to legitimize these "get Grannie" accusations. The last letter really was beyond the pale. Chris Wallace read a letter about Tammy Duckworth that extolled Wallace and Fox for "keeping her feet to the fire!" Really? Could they have found a letter that didn't reference "feet," when after all, Tammy Duckworth is a decorated veteran who lost both her feet in service to our country. Any apologies, Fox?

Mr. Cheney: I think it is outrageous that you think that you are above everyone else and that no-one has a right to question what you did. Furthermore, it is outrageous for you to suggest that your way is the only way. What country do you think you are livining in? It is not for you to decide the right approach, you had your chance.

Frankly I don't give a damn what Cheney thinks of anything.
Who cares what a war criminal, who promoted and defends torture thinks? This is a twisted mind, that only Fake News would treat with respect.
