What the Wild Things Wear

From fierce furs to bold animal prints, designers are creating looks that would feel at home in Maurice Sendak's iconic children's book. Let the fashion rumpus begin.

While not everyone is going so far as to tat up their torsos in honor of Where The Wild Things Are, the celebrated children's book and its upcoming silver-screen adaptation (the Spike Jonze-directed film hits theaters October 16), the fashion industry appears to be harboring a serious fixation on the story. Fall catwalks and ad campaigns alike have reflected the industry's collective leaning toward all things untamed and mystical. From wild furs at Givenchy and Michael Kors, as well as animal prints at Diane Von Furstenberg among other fall runways, animal appreciation has been running deep through the industry's veins. Not to mention, wild forests exactly like the one Max dreams up in the aforementioned tome, have appeared as the setting of choice for a handful of recently released fashion shoots.

Meanwhile, jewelry designer Pamela Love and international boutique Opening Ceremony are paying tribute to the beloved story (with Spike Jonze’s blessing) with limited-edition collections soon to hit the latter's three standalone stores. Not to mention, youth and childhood icons are a consistent theme in fashion this fall. Pop and Love magazines both honor rising fashion stars (some as young as 13-years-old) with their respective September issues, while Sesame Street, Bambi and Little Red Riding Hood have all popped up in campaigns and/or editorials in the likes of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. It's been such a turbulent year for the fashion industry that a retreat to an imaginary world couldn't come at a better time.
