Top 8 Moments From Sunday Talk Shows
Cokie Roberts says Roman Polanski should be taken out and shot, Lindsey Graham blasts Glenn Beck (figuratively), and Rachel Maddow has some choice words for Sarah Palin’s ghost writer. That and more in our weekly roundup.
Cokie on Roman Polanksi: “Take Him Out and Shoot Him”
Now to be fair, Cokie Roberts probably only meant that Roman Polanski should metaphorically shot. Probably. Because she sounds quite emphatic in this segment of “The Green Room” on This Week With George Stephanopoulos. Side note: If you’re not sure whether Roberts’ claim that Polanski “raped and drugged and raped and sodomized a child” is accurate, check out Kate Harding’s influential piece from Salon, and Marcia Clark’s analysis of his courtroom guilty plea in The Daily Beast. For a counterpoint, click here to read the petition for Polanski’s release.
Sen. Lindsey Graham Slams Glenn Beck… Again
And the Glenn Beck bashing continues. Sen. Lindsey Graham made headlines this week with his jab at the Fox News host, calling him a cynic and saying “only in America can you make that much money crying.” The Republican from South Carolina took another swipe on Beck’s own channel, telling Fox News Sunday’s Bret Baier that Beck "doesn't represent the Republican party" and while he isn’t necessarily bad for America, “at the end of the day it’s not the kind of political analysis I buy into."
Carville Piles on Beck, Wife Stares in Dismay
James Carville skewering Glenn Beck doubtless has less credibility that Lindsay Graham doing the same, but it is an indication of how angry the left is becoming at a man it pretty much ignored till a few months ago. Has Carville been this animated since the days of Ken Starr? Carville calls the Fox talker “nuts,” a “hypocrite,” and, bizarrely, a man who doesn’t “know the difference between a football bat and a hockey court.”

Carville is not too far off the mark. Hockey is played in 'rinks', but it is a 'court game'. Few people really understand this distinction, and yet it fell easily from Carville's lips. I doubt he is much of a Hockey fan, but I have known many seasoned Hockey People who never fully appreciated the true nature of the game and how it is designed to be played. Carville is quite right, Hockey is a 'court game', just like basketball.
reardongalt
And the "football bat"? How do you spin that one?
magicman
Obviously Mr. Carville is not a worldclass Sports Fan, but by association, both are known as 'hitting games'...baseball bats being the central symbol. I myself used to be a rabid sports fan many years ago, in my teens, but at this particular moment I would be very hard pressed to tell anyone anything about standings, players, scores, rosters ... you name it. My mind has been occupied with other things.
If we are to judge our Political Advisors by their knowledge of Sports, then we have surely passed the test of The Lilliputians ... and should expect the same fine results.
magicman
These are 'mixed metaphors'. They are used as literary devices commonly to make a point. An example would be very current to the day and would include things like 'Too big to fail', 'the safety of Insurance', 'the reliability of Banks'. It is the subset of what is common between metaphors that then becomes the 'idea' in the communication. Admittedly, it is a scattered form of communication, but very much in tempo with our times, as if to say 'yes, things are confused'. It does not detract from meaning, however.

Well, except that Vince Lombardi always referred to Football as a 'hitting sport' as opposed to a 'contact sport'. In Lombardi's opinion, dancing was a 'contact sport'...and said so on many occasions (see 'Run To Daylight'). The idea, to Lombardi at least, was to make the distinction between levels of violence....in a humorous way so as to gain the player's attention.
Scotty Bowman described and designed the movement of Hockey Players in the same way that John Wooden did with Basketball Players...with pre-designed movements or 'plays'...a series of setups that tactically create the opportunity for teams to take a shot or to defend an area or space. Tennis is also a 'court game', the primary tactic being to strectch the area of the court to it's maximimum size in an attempt to wear out your opponent, just as is done in Ice Hockey...particularly during power plays. There is even a 'alley-oop play' in Ice Hockey, though few recognize it for what it is designed to be. It is called the 'tip-in' or 'deflection shot'. It is essentially the same as Basketball's Alley-Ooop, in that a long pass, designed to look like a shot on goal is actually a well orchestrated alley oop pass to the forward who's job it is to tip or deflect the puck into the net. Goalies hate this play as it renders defense of the goal virtually impossible, especially if the tip is down and to the ice while the goalie is standing, or up and into the corner when the goalie is down in butterfly defense in front of the net. The same play occurs in both Soccer and Lacrosse, which are also court games. Ned Harkness, 'the coach' at Cornell was the only NCAA Coach ever to win Div I National Championships in both Ice Hockey and Lacrosse.
You are confusing the name of the physical space with the tactics and strategy of the games themselves. Carville is not. Maybe he knows more about sports than he lets on. That would be known in Football as a 'hip feint' or 'juke'.
Caradog
This is classic Southern 'we're all from the Holler' humor. Come on, guys - wake up.
Cymatic
Caradog - you got it. It's a funny ironic twist. I guess it flew over some people's heads.
NorCalGladiator
dude..
"Carville calls the Fox talker... a man who doesn't "know the difference between a football bat and a hockey court.""
Carville saying Beck is a guy who tries to talk about things he doesn't know. It's a baseball bat. It's a hockey rink. He was making a (not that high of an intellectual) joke.
I cant believe this many people missed that easy of a joke. And then to try and explain it like they know what he's talking about. See what happens when you watch too much of the Foxtarded News Channel?
ThisThatTheOther
I remember when Bill Kristol was considered a serious journalist. Now he just makes a fool of himself. He and Beck don't love our country, they love themselves -- Carville is dead on.
Ritarita
You do?
I don't remember
Any time when Bill Kristol's
Name was mentioned
Without snickering.
xlntcat
But, but he gave you the stunningly ignorant Grandma Palin. Have you no gratitude?
oakely
Yes, I, a liberal, am very grateful. I pray that he gives us an equivalent for 2012. That would make him my hero.

"Shrill" Krystal must be feeling a little lonely these days, what with the passing of the "thinking man's" conservatives like his father, Safire and the like, and being replaced by the firebrands like Beck, Palin and Hannity. The sad reality is that Conservatives are a dying breed (look at the demographics) while the Progressives populate the landscape. It's a good thing that we have professionals to protect these endangered species!
rhonda1309
I think Maddow graduated from "commenter" school. a little gossip lite, a little zing, and little gotcha!
i think she sounds like a comedian with a zingy one liner most of the time.
connie47
"Commenter" school? I guess that's meant to be a put down of sorts.
Actually, Ms. Maddow got her degree in public policy from Stanford University. She was awarded the John Gardner Fellowship and a Rhodes Scholarship and began her postgraduate study in 1995 at Lincoln College, Oxford. In 2001, she completed her Doctor of Philosophy degree (styled a DPhil) in politics from the University of Oxford.
SCMax101
I think Rhonda meant it as a positive comment for Ms. Maddow, shi is a "by the book" pundit.
reardongalt
Oh, that would explain her knowledge of teabagging. It must be the close proximity to San Franciso.
diamondgirl
Hey Connie, Maddow is still just a Pin Head! She talks like she knows everything, but she actually hurts my brain with her Left Leaning MISINFORMATION!
I can only bear to listen for about 30 seconds, and thank God for the Remote...LOL You gotta give me credit, I do try, but she is out in Left Field most of the time, and I do mean FAR FAR LEFT
crymeariver
Rhonda likes to put people down who are smarter than her. It makes her feel better about her lack of accomplishment.
rhonda1309
yea, and Meghan McCain is a graduate of Columbia. Why does she sound like a teen-ager spreading some good gossip? Is she dumbing down? speaking so the dumb people can catch up? an authority with a punch line? you explain
veeskips
So diamondgirl, you'd prefer it that people in the clips you watch talk like idiots? Maddow is confident and intelligent, don't let that get you down about your own cognitive abilities.
Alaric
All that education and she's still an idiot. Liberal professors must have taught her all they know.
rhonda1309
So typical, all you can do is name call.
Llplo99
Rachel Maddow always look deeper into subjects than most pundits. I think over time we will find that she has one of the sharpest minds on television. The more I listen to her, the more I realize that she is one of the Democrats best weapons.
connie47
Wow, who knew that Rachel Maddow's accomplishments was going to make the right winters so angry?
Baddchild
Maddow, the only thing he proves is that you can go to college for years and still be the dumbest guy in the room.
connie47
Uh, Baddchild, Maddow is a woman.
Baddchild
really??? what was "she" doing next to me at the urinal then?
democracy7
Diamondgirl, it really is too bad you can't comprehend the really big words. I love Rachel Maddow.
Jinglebob
I wonder who her ghost writer is?
crymeariver
She doesn't need one. She has a doctorate (so that's Dr. Maddow to you), and was a former Rhodes Scholar. Unlike other people who need to enter beauty pageants and had to go to 6 colleges before getting 1 lame undergrad degree. You can attack her politics and her looks but she at least wrote her own dissertation.
sidneyb
maddow is sharp, witty, and wise. i would like all media correspondents and pundits to have similar backgrounds and knowledge. this country would look very different.

Bet you didn't learn much about Acorn watching Ms. Maddow!
dcbooknurse
rhonda
Actually Maddow has talked a great deal about how BOGUS the claims being made against ACORN are. The difference is that she uses facts to back up her assertions, understands that pointing out to election officials that some voter registration forms may be fraudulent is totally different from perpetrating voter fraud, and that the big push to try to discredit ACORN is coming from conservative groups who don't much want more people registered to vote unless they are Republicans.
democracy7
Maddow always makes some good points. If Queen Palin ever hopes to get political gravitas, she must be aware her every step is not only examined but up for debate and via the internet is instantly known.
She can't smile and wink her way out of aligning herself with white supremacists.
piktor
General Jim Jones is right in talking about people dying in Afghanistan, as we speak.
On October 7 it will be eight full years of the U.S. military effort there. What has been accomplished? What more has to be done before the mission ends?
How does a ragtag army of suicidal zealots get to prevail after eight years of American and NATO military struggle?
On Kristol: What a prissy, whiny putz.
rhonda1309
Speaking of prissy, whiny putz, how about that Lindsey Graham!
Jinglebob
I agree about Graham and I am a Repub. I am surprised he went anywhere without McCain. Bet he has never watched any of Beck's shows, you watch Beck for a week and he will win you over with logic not feel goodness.
xlntcat
You shouldn't talk about McCain's boyfriend that way.
Warehouseone
Jinglebob
Just beacuse he has a chalkboard doesn't mean he is logical
deegeezee
logic!? please tell me you're joking. were you watching the day he "decoded" the communist symbolism of Rockefeller Center? or the day his "patriotism" was so strong he wept?
that "logic" that wins you over after a week is actually brainwashing. congrats, you're a zombie.
connie47
I'm shocked, shocked to see that the fringe right-wing representatives here are throwing a Republican, Lindsey Graham, under the bus because he does not support the combined lunacy and lies of Glenn Beck.

I know 10/07/01 represents the 8th anniv. of our invading Afghanistan, but once Bush/Cheney took us into their war of choice in Iraq, Afghanistan was all but forgotten. Too few troops & too little concern on the path of Bush/Cheney have left us with the Taliban & Al-Qaeda entrenched in Afghanistan. Add to that mix the Afghan War Lords who have sided with the Taliban & you can see the results.
We need to pull our troops out of the Afghan far off posts & concentrate on the larger picture, can we or can we not win there, without committing our troops for 20 years. If the answer is we can't, pull out. If we stay because some general or generals don't want to quit, I say to hell with them, let's not turn this into another Vietnam.

If we don't dump McChrystal alot more will die, in fact, a lot more have died since McChrystal took the rein. Since he is dying to be a TV star, we should free him to follow his dreams.

Liking Cokie more and more these days

Rachel Maddow on Meet the Press? We really can't find anybody better than Maddow? I admit she makes good camera, but on Meet the Press? Isn't she on MSNBC after Keith? And now she's on Meet the Press? Really, Rachael Maddow? Wow.... what next?
reardongalt
Every time I see Rachel Maddow, which is only by accident, I can't help wondering how she knows what "teabagging" means.
Ritarita
Urban Dictionary-
Silly.
reardongalt
Ok, if you say so, but somehow Her, Schuster, and Anderson all seem just a wee bit too familiar with the term if you catch my drift.
diamondgirl
reardongalt, she knows what it means. I just watched her in the above clip. She is talking about Palin and who she picked as a ghost writer. Watch it above... this is why she makes my brain hurt when she speaks, she is blaming Palin because the ghost writer she picked has is connected in some way so she says to a white supremacy group. That is guilt by association...
Let's TALK ABOUT OBAMA ASSOCIATES: Rev Wright,Ayers,Mentor Saul Alinski,Van Jones,ACORN,SEIU the list goes on and on and on.. They need to take her off the air, she is killing the show and the ratings. you know what leave her on..thats better for the middle/right media shows
crymeariver
She read it in Urban Dictionary like every other literate person in America, except for the tea-baggers. Since she is gay, she's not going around doing any tea-bagging, which is more than I can say about the tea-baggers and some of the Republican men!

Check out what Alaskan's have to say about Palin's affiliation with White Supremacists. Did you ever check in on a Palin rally during the election while the KKK was follwoing her from town to town. When the neo-nazis showed up to render their support in Florida, McCain lost Florida.
reardongalt
very good nightdragon. keep up the good work. rgalt
diamondgirl
franjen, hopefully the Door
crymeariver
You may not like her politics but she's smarter than any of the usual suspects that they have on "Meet the Press".
oakely
I agree, she's very smart and well informed, unlike Beck who is a crackpot and a near dunce. Rachel, though, can be annoying sometimes.
Alaric
Many blogs posting her as a possible crackwhore today!!! Can she prove she isn't ??
MOZART
You have to be well educated, exceedingly smart and fast on your feet to appreciate people like Rachel Maddow.
Rachel Maddow is not for stupid people.
Enjoying and appreciating the Rachel Maddow show is a little like watching Jeopardy....
You can watch Jeopardy or you can watch Glenn Beck... you have a choice and that says a hell of a lot about who you are.
Earlier some poster here said "getting the news from the Rachel Maddow Show" I hate to put a needle in your balloon but hers is not a News broadcast.
It is like the Editorial " in your newspapers.
Hers are comments, her opinions on the news.
And she has probably the best investigative Department in the entire industry.
Jinglebob
On the budget MSNBC has? I heard they will be off the air by years end.
crymeariver
Really? You seem to know a lot of information about a network you claim to hate. A network people claim nobody watches. I bet you secretly watch when nobody is looking :)
Warehouseone
Let me guess. Fox News reported that.
JohnnyCakes
Wouldn't YOU like that.
They're here to stay, pal. The world needs more than just FOX.
Carole65
You kinow, I agree with you that Rachel Maddow does a good job as a left wing commentator and she does it without hyperactivity, but a lot of conviction. I wouldn't say that she's the best investigative commentator, but then all the commentators investigate what will further their political phlosophy.
xlntcat
I will agree that her investigative commentary tends to support her political leaning but she is the only one who even bothers to investigate so she does bring forth relevant data. The reason I refuse to embrace the political ideology of either party is because it clouds objectivity and leads to closed minded premises. It is natural for people to look for validation of their own values, tenets, and beliefs, but you have to be willing to put them aside and attempt to see the world through the eyes of those who disagree with you to continue to grow and learn. Neither political philosophy will solve the massive problems we currently face. These are concrete versus philosophical problems.
oakely
Way to go, xintcat. Too many people tend toward dogmatism.
It wouldn't kill a liberal to, for example, disavow abortion on moral grounds, but still remain a liberal. Neither would it kill free-marketeers to admit that a totally unfettered free market is a disaster waiting to happen.
That too many people are locked to their ideological boxes is a large part of the problem in our political and social discourse.
slmpirate
I watch Rachel and I think she does a reasonable commentary. However, much like the folks at FOX news, I believe that she can be sometimes to dogmatic in her approach. I dont hold that against her as I believe MSNBC is nothing more than a counter to the propoganda that came out of FOX. I still believe that the tennor from both conservatives and liberals needs to be more civil. I am against abortion and yet dont feel it is my place to tell a fellow american what she can do with her body, does that make me a conservative? I claim to be a Liberal..It is my sense that it is time to turn our backs on media propagandists, campaign strategists, think-tank goons, and political pundits. These professional hucksters flourish on the assumption that the majority of people are easily duped. They are not compatriots of freedom, but rather users of freedom who propagate deception.
It is time we no longer delight in scandal and innuendo, as political strategists count on. Behind the media presentation of scandal is a hidden motive designed to draw out attention from something else, and paint everyone of a given party as sharing in guilt. There is no honor in this. When corruption is discovered, take care of it according to the law, announce it on the news in a sane, respectful manner, and avoid the media circus.
It is time we choose to vote according to the worth as candidates, rather than party affiliation or unrelated issues.
It is also time that we embrace the liberal and conservative traditions that we have, merge them into something positive, and make our democratic system the shining example of government that it can be.

What do you expect. Women are always judged according to superficial things by the right. They sure didn't pick Sarah Palin based on her superior intellect. But she's OH, SO pretty!

jforty, funny! What about the men, kinda dull brains and usually sort of unattractive to look at with the guns and interns and other activities they engage in!

On the contrary....I think the left would be elated to see Sarah Pain run for the Presidency in
2012.
I myself, would be overjoyed.
That would be one easy battle for the Dems.

James Carville is Brilliant but he plays crazy, while Mary Matalin might seem rational at first (and to a brain dead media) she is crazy, so I guess it is true oppisites do attract.
Jinglebob
I like Mary a lot but isn't she embarrassed to be seen out in public with that guy?
oakely
She's in love with him, and knows a heck of a lot more about him than you do.

Is it just me, or do Carville and Matalin look like twin brothers, one of whom is in drag?

I miss Tim Russert. David Gregory is a sniveling "Gotcha" dingbat, and the folks on "This Week with Snufflelufagus" make my ears ache with their nonsense. George Will used to interest me 15 years ago but now he just comes off as a mean old man.
These days the best a political junkie can get is Fareed's GPS for the serious foreign goods and the McLaughlin Group for a laugh. Pat Buchanan pisses me off half the time but he's a sharp tac.
