A-List Academies

Madonna just broke ground on an education center in Malawi, Shakira has one in Colombia, and Andre Agassi’s school is a national role model. VIEW OUR GALLERY of stars with classrooms. Plus, check out more from Giving Beast.

Across the world, celebrities are dedicating their time and resources to help grant the next generation of young people brighter futures. Madonna traveled to Malawi this week to break ground on her new $15 million Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, which will educate more than 500 girls in a country with 1 million orphans. The singer was inspired by Oprah’s leadership academy in South Africa, which opened in 2007 and educates girls from grades 7 to 12. Sports stars are also keen on giving back—NBA star Yao Ming founded a school in his native China after an 8.0 magnitude earthquake destroyed 185 education centers, and Serena Williams teamed up with Hewlett Packard to open a secondary school in Nairobi.

I was hoping to see David Robinson (NBA Spurs) and his Carver Academy in San Antonio, TX. He has done so much for at risk kids in San Antonio and the school has a great track record.

Same here. Without him, no list of celebrity academies is complete. He gave 9 million dollars out of his own pocket to fund the Carver Academy. Poor list on behalf of Daily Beast.

I would be much more impressed if Madonna opened a school in her home town of Detroit which is suffering just as much as Malawi.

yeah, why hasn't she done more for Detroit? And why is she only giving $100,000 when shakira is giving 4 million?

I know Detroit is in dire straits, but there is absolutely no comparison with Malawi, which is probably the poorest nation on the planet. I saw a picture of a "classroom" recently and it looked like an abandoned building after a hurricane had torn through it. No desks. No chairs. No chalkboard. No lights. No door. Nothing.
