Fort Hood's History of Military-on-Military Violence
Thursday's mass shooting was not the first violent event Fort Hood has suffered. Fox News reports the following violent incidents:
- In September 2008, a 21-year-old Fort Hood soldier fatally shot his lieutenant, and then himself, during an off-base confrontation in his apartment. Fox News continues:
- "Two months later a New York parolee with an extensive criminal record was executed for robbing, raping and fatally shooting an Army medic at her apartment near Fort Hood."
- "In July of 2009, Fort Hood Spc. Armano Baca was charged with murdering fellow soldier Spc. Ryan Richard Schlack from Wisconsin." Baca and Schlock had recently returned from tours in Iraq.
- "Three months ago Spc. Jared Lee Bottorff was charged with murder after a shooting at a party near the post."

As the mom of a Natl Guard soldier who is slated to deploy in Jan of next year (2nd 1-year tour), I now have to fear for my son's life when he's in pre-deployment phase. It's time to end the Back Door Draft. Our govt is destroying our military, along with the best and the brightest of a generation. If the madness of two 'wars' is to continue, bring back the Draft for everyone, starting with the deadbeat dads and pot smokers that are filling up our prisons (who we, the tax payers, are paying to support). President Obama, you said you were the anti-war President ~ so, when are you going to begin bringing them all home?
nightdragon09
"The best and brightest of a generation" you say? Wait a minute... I thought all soldiers were just poor dumb rednecks who were forced to join the military because they're too stupid for college or to get a real job? At least, that's according to what all you lefties have been saying about them for the previous 8 years.
Now suddenly they are the "best and brightest of a generation" just because the guy you voted for is President and you (supposedly) have a son for whom you now fear for his life when he's in pre-deployment phase just because a member of the 72nd Virgin Brigade had some serious issues and chose to take the lives of his own brothers in uniform rather than carry out his duty???
Yeah ok, and my name's Jack and I've got some magic beans to sell to your dumb ass!
Spartann
I don't care if he's one of the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse... soon the Military will show us all how American Justice should be dealt out to a Terrorist....

I love how you don't let the facts get in your way and that you know who this man is and what his motivation was. Can you also predict lottery results in advance? Can you tell us which country is going to win the Olympic Gold metal in ice skating?
nightdragon09
Granite... the guy made a blog post that equated "suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades",... and your biggest issue is that he was "harassed" for being a Muslim?
You know... if everyone in this country went postal because they were "harassed" at some point in their lives, for whatever reason... there'd be no one left alive! He didn't go on a random killing spree either... he deliberately targeted people he knew, meaning he had a beef with them for whatever reason, but after he posted and made comments like the ones detailed above, I can't imagine why anyone would give him problems... he's just an innocent little lamb!
I shed no tears for this man, and the fact that he is still alive is just a cruel joke on us all.
Spartann
Hey river bitch ..... As a matter of fact, I can predict the lottery results..... If I was you, I wouldn't waste money on a single ticket this week... Now go read what I told Granite to do, then you do the same.

Has it dawned on anyone that as an Army psychologist who wanted out of the military that he might have been making statements that were controversial to try and get himself out?
cbl99201
Allah Ahkbar. Figures.
Granite
*sarcasm ahead*
Yes! Let's keep the vicious bullying cycle going! He was bullied because he is a Muslim, then he snaps, so let's pay it forward with interest and crack down harder on Muslims!
Brilliant thinking! Keeping the hate alive, spartann!

On a serious note:
This is such a tragic loss of so many lives. I hope and pray for the victims, their families, and their friends.

There is no indication that this soldier was a terrorist.

This is so very sad!!! Makes you angry, frustrated, sick, numb and very sad , all at once!!! I'm very upset right now, this has indeed affected me deeply!! Things like this shouldn't happen. Hopelessness creeps in, ahhhh!
crymeariver
Osea,
you shouldn't feel hopeless. The problem with mass shootings like this, Virgina Tech and Columbine is that they are very RARE. They are horrific and very sad but they are VERY RARE events. On the other hand thousands of Americans die YEARLY from drunk-driving accidents or backyard drownings. We don't see wall to wall coverage of such deaths and so learn to live with them as part of everyday life without falling apart.
If you are feeling extremely depressed and hopeless, the best thing to do is to take a break from all the media coverage. Let's face it, the media are going to milk this for ratings and in the process suck as much emotion out of you as possible to keep you watching and reading. Go to Hulu.com and watch a funny show or an old movie, call up friends and family, read a favorite childhood book. The main thing is to keep some perspective on this and STOP watching news and clicking on web stories dealing with the shootings.
leslie1
Rare isn't exactly the word I would use. You had no trouble listing 3 off the top. There are many more shootings on a smaller scale every year. I think the word rare is unfortunately becoming an incorrect description.
torodad
Well, modern life isn't for cry-babies. It's a harsh world out there. This appears to be a case of someone pushed beyond his limits. He was there as a doctor to look for signs of stress in the troops. Whose job was it to look for signs of stress in the doctors?
nightdragon09
I for one am actually glad that he's still alive... too often these murderous scum go out in either a hail of bullets by the cops or turn their own gun on themselves after they've already done their damage just like they wanted to... now for once we can hear strait from this scumbag's own mouth why he did what he did, and then promptly sit him down on Ol' Sparky's lap for the shock of a lifetime.
nightdragon09
And another thing... it speaks volumes about the compassion and humane way we treat killers of our own countrymen by the simple fact that this guy is recovering in a hospital bed right now (unlike a good deal of his victims) and isn't completely FUBAR like he should be.
bryanlevi
OK fellow Americans, here it is as simple as it can be put:
Whether people are here, in the Middle East, or anywhere else, if they are abused, humiliated & pushed past their breaking points- there will be consequences.
I'm not saying it is OK what people do in these horribly unfortunate circumstances, but you have got to admit & address the fact that a lot of times it is not OK what happened to these people to get them to that point.
rhonda1309
so are you part of the defense team or family. did people hurt his feelings? are you with Cair or ACLU? one person to blame for this , the muslim shooter!
sillylemur
Yes, and if all you want to to is place blame, that attitude is just peachy. But if you want to keep things like this from happening, you have to deal with the precipitating factors. Pretending these situations are all about lone nuts is kind of ridiculous, esp. considering this is at least the second mass shooting in Killeen alone.
Instead of mocking people who bring this up, you might want to remember that all those people might still be alive today if someone had heeded the massive warning signs this guy was giving out before yesterday.
seriousjoke
No, wrong.
One person to blame: the shooter. His religion is not to blame anymore than it would have been had he been Christian, Jewish or agnostic. Sadly, this type of tragedy is far too common. When a Muslim is involved, it is because of his religion while in other cases, it is irrelevant. Why is that?
loloo33
ok stupid Rhonda309 why don't you jump around glad that this happens.
bryanlevi
Let me reiterate: I do not "blame" anyone but the person committing the crime, but rhonda (and anyone else,) my point is that these things do not happen in a vacuum. If a child is routinely beaten, they often grow up to be an abuser themselves. It's not rocket science.
I am also not going to play PolyAnna regarding the role the Muslim religion plays in this and other violence- but I am also not saying that all Muslims are violent.
Veronicaxy
@Bryan: completely agree. No one is defending this man, but that should have happened when he was being harrassed.
These kinds of incidents *aren't* rare in the U.S., they happen on an ongoing basis and are often the result of someone who snaps after ongoing bullying. What other first world country experiences this? We've got guns all over the place, available to virtually anyone. Create an enemy at your own risk.
The soldiers that harrassed him should have been dealt with and shut down.
ApresSki
He's gonna wish he'd died now that they know he's alive!
Got any extra Demerol or Propofol???
Yeah, I thought not . . .

Well this Muslin thug Nidal, I guess is an anchor baby? His parents came here illegally and started to multiply, this is great I wonder how many more are out there?
We the US have to do something about our immigration laws before we are all wiped out, Remember Rome fell from within
Anchor babies were a law made for the slaves after the civil war to accept their offspring's. This law does not apply to illegal aliens, but the Gov't ignored our laws and somehow made illegals part of this law{ anchor babies.}
RockyMissouri
You are an immigrant yourself- where did you come from??
winston1
The U.S.A. and proud of it.
mutterhals
I prefer a nice cotton blend, but that's just me. Tell me, is english your first language? Are you sure?
loloo33
Winston1, are you a native Indian???? if not you are an immigrant, your ancestors stole the land from the Indians, so what rights are you talking about? Learn your history before speaking, otherwise it sounds stupid and ignorant.
sillylemur
Yes, you'd think that a country built so completely on immigration would get that, wouldn't you?
ThinkAgain
Anti-war leftwing nut. Liberals should consider how idiotic that sounds the next time they run around making mass generalizations about the right when someone who happens to share their opinion about something goes off.
loloo33
jump on it when you have a chance right? blame everything on the antiwar people, when you are not in the army yourself, probably too fat or lazy to go anywhere right? so just soit there, watch tv, and complain about something.
sillylemur
Yes, muslin thugs are so much worse than cotton ones.
But this leaves me wondering -"accept their offspring's"...what?
painter
Now i understand, if the shooting takes place in Iraq or Afghanistan, it is a terrorist act committed by an insurgent radical Muslim carrying out his mandate as taught by the Koran, yet if it takes place in America, the shooter becomes a victim of unreasonable duress complicated by deep personal problems and an uncaring authority .makes perfect sense.
sillylemur
No, it's like Granite said - abuse only leads to more abuse. What this man did could have been prevented, most likely. The signs were there at last six months ago.
mdargo
The more we learn, the more I think maybe the Army dropped the ball a bit.
loloo33
He was born in Virgenia, how on earth he could be a muslim? that's a white freaks state. But anyway, it has nothing to do with religions, this is a sensitive problem he is a coward and a killer, it has nothing to do with the terrorost attack.
Thank you.
