10 Palin Hits the Leakers Missed
Mark Hirsch / Getty Images
Yes, details have leaked. But as Going Rogue hits stores today, plenty of surprises remain. From Sarah Palin’s first kiss with Todd to her enemies list, The Daily Beast digs up the juicy tidbits.
After weeks of hype, the baby finally arrived, weighing in at 413 pages with six chapters and one photo of a skinned harbor seal. No sooner had it appeared in bookstores Tuesday than Going Rogue jumped to the No. 1 sales rank on Amazon—and threatened to eclipse coverage of President Obama’s Asia trip. While bits and pieces leaked out during the days before the book’s official release, The Daily Beast dug up some of the juiciest new tidbits overlooked by the leakers.
Todd Kisses and Tells
Sarah Palin describes her first kiss with Todd, riding shotgun in his Mustang during her senior year of high school:
“On the drive home in his Mustang, he tried to kiss me for the first time. But the truth was, I was a never-really-been-kissed nerd. As soon as Todd hit my driveway, I jumped out of the car, scared to death that this suave worldly guy that I was crazy about would find out what a wallflower I was. The next day, my sheltered world felt shattered when he told the boys in the locker room… that I didn’t even know how to kiss….My young, crushed spirit learned a lesson about guys that day: Even the good ones can act like jerks.”
Enemies Big and Small
Palin has harsh words for many national figures, named and unnamed. John Kerry is an “elitist loon.” Actress Ashley Judd, who campaigned against the aerial slaughter of wolves, is “a perky, pretty celebrity” with “asinine plans.” Todd Purdum, who wrote a long profile of Palin for Vanity Fair, is “hostile.”
But what’s more surprising than Palin’s attacks on journalist bigfoots and Hollywood celebrities is the disdain she felt for local officials from her earliest days in Alaska politics. Her first legislative director when she was elected governor of Alaska was a “doozy.” She writes:
“He turned out to be a BlackBerry games addict who couldn’t seem to keep his lunch off his tie. He relished the perception that he was a ‘player’ in Juneau politics, but we were never sure which team he was on.”
Palin slams a onetime Republican rival as “a wealthy, effete young chap” whose local radio show and blogging were “major steps up from a previous job as our limo driver at Todd’s cousin’s wedding.”
Palin’s Campaign Soundtrack
Palin passed the time on long campaign road trips listening to Big & Rich, Martina McBride, and Travis Tritt. She calls Hank Williams Jr., the rocker of Monday Night Football fame, a “well-known patriot.” Kid Rock, a former drug dealer who introduced the world to the phrase, “Bawitdaba da dang diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy,” is described as “very pro-America and has common-sense ideas.” On one Alaska road trip, Palin remembers driving “to the sound of the Black Eyed Peas and an old LL Cool J remix we found in the glove box.” A few years later, Will.I.Am of Black Eyed Peas would record a hit song for Obama, “Yes We Can,” viewed by millions. LL Cool J played at an inauguration ball, celebrating Palin’s opponent.
Bristol’s Maternal Instincts
Palin describes the news of her daughter Bristol’s pregnancy as “shocking.” Nonetheless, she saw years earlier that her eldest daughter had the motherly itch.
“As she grew she manifested her little mama’s heart by nurturing her siblings and cousins and always begging to babysit,” Palin writes. “One evening just before she turned eight… I was lying next to her reading when she rolled over and screwed her eyes down into a commanding state. ‘You,’ she decreed, ‘are going to rent me a baby for my birthday!’”
Early SNL Fan
Palin’s appearance on Saturday Night Live may have been one of the most surreal moments of the campaign. And Tina Fey’s impersonation of Palin was the breakout hit of the show’s 2008 season. But Palin has been a longtime fan of the program, weathering the freezing cold of her childhood TV den—it was built over the garage—to watch the show:
“In our teen years, if we stayed awake long enough, we’d sneak upstairs and watch Saturday Night Live. Having grown up in a house where ‘butt’ was a bad word and we had to say ‘bottom,’ we assumed we had to sneak. It wasn’t until years later that we learned our parents got a kick out of SNL’s political humor, too.”
Palin’s Joementum
It leaked early that Palin praised the independent senator in her book, but she lays it on pretty thick right at a moment when Lieberman is drifting away from Democrats yet again:
“There was a bright spot in Philly and his name was Joe Lieberman.”
Later she writes, recounting his advice:
“'God is going to see you through this,’ Senator Lieberman said. ‘Just put your faith in Him and let Him take care of it.’ Then he repeated our mutual friend John's words of wisdom: 'Just have fun!' It was so heartfelt, so genuine, so sincere.”

Wow. Her arrogance is unmatched. What a petty, sad, vindictive woman.
neroves1
I wonder how "sad" you would be if it were a man who wrote this book. She has made her point with intelligence and wit, how vindictive is that? In a world of media trash, she apparently, has got the last word. I call that brilliant.
AlanD2
She seems to have made her points more with lies than with intelligence and wit, neroves1.
Like a lot of other conservatives...
studentoflaw
it would be equally sad and equally vindictive. and equally hypocritical. and equally untrue. etc, etc.
empressaw
Yep, she's still quite the idiot...

Unreflective yet paranoid - what a nice mix!

So.....In Barracuda's world, either Obama is more powerful than God or God plays favorites. God got Darling Sarah through the debates but he isn't, or won't be powerful enough to help Bristol with her coffeshop during Obama's term. Wow.
byersl
I'm pretty close to speechless over this woman.
daveinboise
Let's hope everyone get that way and we can move on to other things!
winterparkmom
How does anyone grow up to be so stupid, let alone so cunning, ambitious and manipulative. She'll have her little teabaggers popping chubbies at her book, but she has nothing to convey to independent voters like me who look for substance and merit. I hate to tell her, "real America" is independent voters who want to know what you've done, what you're going to do, and how will it affect them.
SteveGutterman
She's mean. Like so many economic/cultural fundamentalists, she's mean.
piktor
Redneck America hobnobbing with the hated elites. This book is what you get.
eat5vegetables
She's simply a failure but most objective standards. Blaming others is the preferred technique for failures. The simple truth is that she couldn't handle one term in office. It is obscene to see someone with so little achievement exhibit such arrogance. She is drunk with fame, and it's so obscene that we can't stop watching.
What is interesting is how many of us love to watch her arrogance and failure play out on the national stage. It's like a slow motion train wreck. I wish she'd go away too, but I click every link to see what she's up to. Weird. Love and Hate are closer than we think.
The opposite of both is indifference, something that has yet to evolve, but will eventually. As she fails to gain any real power, rational Americans will grow indifferent and we'll see her fade. Her "base" has very little real power and will not be capable of sustaining any real attention upon her. She'll end up on Fox News as an anchor at that point.
neroves1
YOUR a failure as an astrologer!
AlanD2
neroves1: A typical meaningless conservative rant.
RegisteredIndependent
"The simple truth is that she couldn't handle one term in office. "
Hmmm..... I seem to recall a certain Senator from Illinois who became POTUS after serving a mere 1/3 of his very first term in the Senate with absolutely no previous executive experience.
Are you suggesting that Sarah Palin, who first served as Mayor of Wasilla and then moved on to become the Governor of Alaska could very well follow suit?
suzannewynn
maybe true registeredindependent, but he did not leave office to pursue is book tour career to make millions, he became President b/c he felt he could make a difference... very different from someone who leaves office to make more money!!! She is a hypocrit and a petty, small minded person with no understanding of the real worl.
In the Asis conference she was walked out on b/c she is an idiot... and I don't see them clamoring for her to return to the lecture circuit.
RegisteredIndependent
Calm down, susannewynn - I was just asking a question.
If I follow the logic (!) of the comment I responded to, it would seem like what's good for the goose is decidedly NOT good for the gander.
BTW, Pain quit her post because the Ak. Dems AND Repubs were stalemating her every move. The Dems because she stole Obama's thunder from day one, and the Repubs because she had the audacity to challenge Ted Stevens and his inane Bridge to Nowhere.
Your comment only re-enforces my amusement with the vitriol that so many Obama supporters heap upon this woman.
If anyone's hypocritical, it is the fawning media that complains about her presence in the press while at the same time giving her how many - at least 20 a day? - stories for us to read.
As far as the "difference" that Obama has made, I'm still waiting for that to appear. Along with the "Change" I voted for. So far, the only change I have is the 70 cents that my dollar is now worth under his stewardship.

RegisteredIndependent:
Obama didn't quit. That's what she did. Plain and simple. Her excuses don't matter. As you admit, she couldn't govern . . . even her fellow Republicans.
Bulldoglover100
Palin is a liar.
Palin is a quitter for money.
Palin uses her children to gain attention,
Palin is actually stupid.
and your 70 cents on the dollar? Blame George Bush who got us in this mess and not Obama who at least is trying to get us out of it.
dooreen
She believes in creation and doesn't think kissing is instinctive. You just know how to kiss. How can anyone be that stupid, not knowing how to kiss, and how can anyone not kiss and tell, it is bad enough kissing and telling, but not kissing and telling.
jda1973
just when you think she can't get any more stupid......
Soonchurcher
I am not a redneck, or uneducated, or bigoted or a Repub. I am a educated, moderate, Independent. Guess what? I love this woman. I do not know if I would vote for her for President or not. What I do know is that those who mock and ridicule her are arrogant and egotistical and have not taken the time to see her for what she is. I would have this woman lead the country way before I would have the buffoon who is doing so now!
AlanD2
The problem, Soonchurcher, is that most Americans have taken the time to see her for what she is, and it is not pleasant to think that she might have been a heartbeat away from the Presidency.
Despite this, I heartily encourage you to get her to run for President in 2012. This would ensure Obama's second term as one of the best Presidents we have ever had.
neroves1
Alan! She has not even made any remarks regarding a bid. And i dare say, the American public has already shown great reverence towards her. She is now free to speak her truth, something your pessimistic ramblings don't come close to.
Bulldoglover100
No...some of us who mock and call her on ALL her lies are not arrogant nor egotistical...we simply do not want the village idiot running this country. Let her go wink her way through a talk show....she hurts no one that way...let her go let her witch doctor pray over her on a talk show....she hurts no one that way...and let her cover for her daughters when they keep winding up knocked up using the conservative method of birth control....she hurts no one that way....

"Educated" as in what?

I think what you are reacting to is the openly expressed distain
that progressives feel upon seeing someone with so little experience profess to be ready to lead the country. I know that it makes me angry. She can't really even lead her own family or Alaska for that matter.
I am pretty sure that, just hanging out with her, I'd like her too. She's got charisma - that's is for sure. But, I wonder. Do you think she can lead the nation? She would need to know a lot more than she knows. You don't just rely on your gut when negotiating nuclear arms treaties or proposing a solution to the oil crisis. It's very complicated and a smart person with a strong education and a cool temperament is what is called for. I do think she's smarter than liberals admit, but her education and experience are lacking.
Soonchurcher
I appreciate your comment and your views. That said, after what all the ivy league educated, cool headed presidents have done and are doing to the country now and over the years, I think someone with just basic common sense who is quick witted and a quick study might be just what we need.
NCLady
I would agree with you except, she doesn't seem to have much common sense. I would think that common sense would dictate her saying no to John McCain when asked to be on his ticket. Common sense would tell her that her daughter would be embarrassed to have the world know that she was expecting. Common sense would have told her that she wasn't qualified or ready. Common sense would have told her to make her book a policy book, and thus a reintroduction to the country instead of 413 pages of whining, pettiness and sheer ignorance.
watching
that's what people said as they voted for George Bush
SteveGutterman
Um...you don't want intelligent, accomplished and, um, very well educated, peeps running the country? You, know, the types of people that go to schools to get an education about the world and hopefully themselves. You prefer that folksy, anti intellectual, homegrown pride stuff that Palin peddles, as did the last president? What common sense does Sarah Palin--or anybody with her apparent contempt for reality and her extraordinary vanity in considering herself remotely fit for being president--exhibit? Quick witted--huh? Quick study? Try stenography. Not what we need.
AlanD2
I agree with watching. Look what happened with Bush, a nice, C-average college student, who would be fun to have a beer with while watching football.
Wetpixels
Good grief. When will she finally go away?
JimH52
Palin will always be known as the quitter. She will be a millionaire soon, if she isn't already, but she will never be the sharpest knife in the drawer.
rtwyatt3
My goodness, this woman is delusional. Obama responsible for troopergate? Are you kidding me? SHE filed the troopergate investigation against herself before anyone outside of Alaska even knew who she was. Boy, she must really think Obama is a Messiah. Did she ever consider that Wallace knew of some nasty things coming out about her because reporters were hounding them for statements? I thought she was a journalism major.
You know what the sad part is? Anybody who is in love with Palin will believe her over ANY facts.
RoughAcres
Ugh that someone would marry a man who talked about them in the boy's locker room the next day.
Ugh that she would think Nicole Wallace was out to get her, when the woman was only saying the obvious: the press and public are barracuda, whether you're innocent or guilty.
Ugh that a politician would pick this woman simply because she might uptick the favorables among the fringe.
Ugh that she is so clueless about herself.
Ugh that I now have to hear her name every fifteen minutes and don't know how long this media frenzy will last.
dlas1935
Beast! please stop! Let this woman drift into the abyss of obscurity where she belongs so we can get on with relevant matters
