how many books have you sold, jr? Your Dad would be so proud!

Isn't your Dad the man who said he would rather fill Congress from the phonebook!

man, I did not realize this site was the site for everyone's kid to dump on the world.

Christopher Buckley, Elizabeth Gates, Meghan McCain, who else?

So many SP defenders exhibit a peculiar lack of spelling and grammatical ability (even in this day of spell and grammar check). Perhaps it's elitist (and unpatriotic) to be well educated...?

for decades Republicans have been courting (and helping to create) the uneducated electorate. Bush and Palin are just the next step - both supposedly very intelligent - but their education seems to be lacking, significantly. It's no surprise that their defenders would exhibit the same attributes, as I said that is who they are courting.

maladapted lies again, an unfortunate conservative trait these days.

The majority of Americans with higher-level degrees are Democrats.

By the way, Obama's college and graduate school achievements put him way above most Americans, doubtless including Mal.

I joke with my conservative father-in-law that I always vote for the presidential candidate with the highest IQ and in my voting life that's never been a Republican. He has no way of responding, just goes red and sputters haplessly.

maladapted: I checked out your "big ugly link". You are correct in what you say it shows. But you neglected to mention that it only goes through 2004. A little bit has changed since then - the 2006 and 2008 elections, for example.

I found a more recent Gallup poll (Aprill 2008) that shows "Barack Obama leads John McCain by a significant margin among voters with the most education, but trails the likely Republican nominee among voters with the least formal education."

People with 4-year degrees were evenly split between Obama and McCain, but people with postgraduate education favored Obama by 52%, with just 42% preferring McCain. Check it yourself:

http://www.gallup.com/poll/106381/Obama-Education-Gap-Extends-General-El ection.aspx

(Remove extra spaces if you copy and paste the link.)

So I decline the honor of being "in the familiar position of being dead wrong."

Unless you can find a better source, I leave that position to you, Mal.

It's a comparative thing, Mal. Fulbright scholar Clinton v Bush I. Nobel Laureate Gore v Bush II. It's going back a bit for me, but at one point Dan Quale's name was being bandied about as a potential Republican candidate--not one of America's brightest. I know very little about McCain's intelligence; he seems to be quite a reasonable man except in his choice of running mate, but adding SP to the ticket brought the Republican ticket IQ way down. You can bet Obama never got a D- in anything, especially an economics class.

BovaryfromBeyond: When McCain graduated from the Naval Academy in 1958, he was fifth from the bottom in class rank, 894th out of 899.

Not exactly the brightest bulb in his class.

Well, let's see if I can't help you out on this one. I won't be tallying the total number of books CB has sold in his long and illustrious career -- because, frankly, that's something you can (and should) research yourself (before asking such an inane question) -- but I can tell you he's WRITTEN 15 of them to SP's ONE. In addition, TWO of his books have been made into movies.

P.S. I echo the sentiments of judgeinmillvalley re: correcting your screen name.

Actually Sarah has written zero books. Going Rogue was ghost written by Lynn Vincent after Sarah dictated the some of the details to Lynn. Sarah should technically not have her name on the cover as author, perhaps just as a co-author or contributor.

I remember back in '04 when a local, well known owner of a car dealership decided to cash in his name recognition and wealth to buy his own Republican franchise. I put it this way because I listened to him take questions on a neutral radio program and the guy had no answers to any questions posed by callers (the host was an impartial moderator), just the sort of pre-packaged, red meat, code-word answers that I hear coming from Palin all the time. If the guy had any actual answers it was impossible to tell. He sounded like an idiot. I listened to a lot of programs on that station, and usually I was upset because right-wing pros would walk in and shred any callers that challenged them, but this dude was not good at it at all.
The idea that politics is something that any rube can walk in and do as long as he/she has the moral fiber for it is as stupid as it gets. It's like being frustrated by a bad plumber and resolving to only have untrained plumbers from now on. Grow up already.
Mr. Buckley is oh-so-cheeky and well spoken, but as far as I can tell, he's just another jackass with nothing to add to the conversation. As somebody mentioned above, what's with all the damn nepotism around here?

I am not of the political persuasion that either the father or the son Buckleys are. However, I enjoy reading what both have written over the years, as fine writing showing intelligent thoughts and viewpoints even if they are not shared by me, are like good meatloaf and mashed potatoes. To be savored, even if I get indigestion afterwards.

And as to diamondgirl's remarks, it boggles my mind how anyone, even those with low IQs, can make statements such as she does.

Stewart asks supporters to help raise $500,000 to "push back against Sarah Palin and her allies."ose who doubt me and my article I would like to add that
President Obama's political operation took a shot at Sarah Palin today, accusing her of lying on her media blitz.
"It's dangerous," Organizing for America Director Mitch Stewart said of Palin's book tour. ...

This is right out of Saul Alinski's Rules for Radicals page 100

" The job of the organizer is to maneuver and bait the establishment so that it will publicly attack him as a "dangerous enemy"

"This need is met by the establishment's use of the brand"dangerous," for in that one word the establishment reveals its omnipotence. Now the organizer has his "birth certificate" and he can begin...

You lovely libs are so transparent it astonishing. I should just post the entire book; can't you people have an original idea in those heads of yours?

But the kick he is allowing at Palin, and I say allowing because he evidently doesnt have the guts, to just come right out and say what he's planning.. But as I've said before, Palin is a tough duck. Site a source, please, for this claim about Obama ordering $500K in negative ads against Palin. Given that it's not an election year -- and, of course, she's not running for anything -- without a solid link to a source, it's a damn dubious claim. That would be like me taking out $500 worth of ads "against" you, diamondgirl, just because I don't like your politics. Last I checked, even very powerful people don't actually PAY for ads broadcasting their "dislike" of people. And put that way, doesn't it sound pretty damn silly?

Wait. Wait. Found it:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2391560/posts

So now you're going to try to claim that SP's just a li'l ol' private citizen and how dare Obama refute whatever blows through the transoms of her mind and out her pie hole? Doesn't work that way, sweetpea. She's a public figure. She's campaigning against health care reform. Obama's not taking on a private citizen. He's taking on the POLITICAL STANCE of a PUBLIC FIGURE. Get the difference? Or is the nuance just too subtle for you?

There are two kinds of people in this country. SP acolytes who fear government "death panels." And the rest of us who fear the very REAL "death panels" that already exist in the form of insurance companies who deny coverage to 4 month olds who weigh in on the north side of the 95th percentile, 2 year olds who weigh in on the south side of the 20th, anyone with preexisting conditions, children who use up their yearly "allotment" of coverage, anyone over a certain age, anyone who they can put off without a fight, etc. Medical expenses are the leading cause of bankruptcy in this country. The DEATH PANELS already exist. You better pray hard to your God that they don't come sniffing around after you at some point in your life.

It was also on Fox this morning, I know it means noting if it doent come on MSNBC Obama run Media..
If you think Obama isnt scared of Palins popularity you are out of touch with how it works, if you think he doent intend on bashing her or having his propaganda machine to do it for him, you havnt been paying attentin to what they have done to her so far, and will continue to do, until Obama is the loser because he is not helping those out of jobs instead of kissing @sses in China... did anyone see Saturday Night live skit on that by the way? I emailed to everyone I know. Now that SNL has thrown Obama under the bus, its over for him.

She does scare the shit out of me--not her, per se, but the fact that anyone so clearly deceitful, narcissistic and ignorant could 1.) Believe she is qualified to be president and 2.) Convince a large number of others of the same is profoundly frightening. I really thought most of my fellow citizens cared more about this country...

The thing is - the people that she has convinced are as narcissistic as she is. So when you attack Palin - they take it personally because they perceive it as an attack on them.

As to Palin being ignorant - well her fans are equally as narcissistic and ignorant - and they all probably think that they are qualified to do what ever they want. So again - they take it as a personal insult when Palin's competency is questioned.

Concerning Palin's deceitfulness - well there I think that her fan's are in denial.

MManion: don't come forward with that crap. Your "fellow citizens" have already had the shit scared outta them with this organizer you call president. I don't expect much outta your whacko party. But I would expect that when logic smacks you in the face you would recognise that. I don't think Palin could win if she ran. But if she does run your Obamason is gonna sweat bullets. She can take enough votes to upset the whole election even if he pulls the same crap he pulled last time. At least we now know what kinda crook we're up against. And that game can be played by all.

This isn't credible because clearly d--dgirl IS Sarah Palin. The evidence was always right there--the preoccupation with obscure blogs that mention her, the illiteracy, the made-up charges, the obsession with Sarah Palin.

Speaking as a longtime liberal, I admire the hell out of C. Buckley and his late father both. I've not always agreed with them about many things, but there was never any doubt that they were coming to their opinions with thought and care, and that you even stood a chance of convincing them that they needed to change their opinion based on a good argument... although you'd need to have a really GOOD argument to out-argue either one. :)

Perhaps most importantly, their opinions are not based on the quasi-religious 'purity' that's sweeping the GOP these days. I'm sure, for example, that Buckley, Sr., would be excoriated today for his ardent belief in legalizing marijuana, but that wouldn't change his opinion.

You've got to be crazier than usual, diamondgirl.

Running against Palin in 2012 would be a gift beyond price for Obama. So if anything, he should be encouraging her to run.

I prefer reading Buckley's distillation of the inane to reading anything Sarah Palin has to say. I think he is providing a public service to those of us who are so amused by SP's idiot folksiness. I guess if you're right that we're so "scared," then I love it because I haven't laughed this much since Dan Quayle.

Thanks for the index, CB.

For me, the truly scary thing about Sarah Palin is her inability to separate her evangelical Christianity from her politics. Her stand on abortion and on teaching creationism in our schools make it frighteningly clear that she is blind to the difference between a democratic republic and a Christian theocracy. And that, ladies and gentlemen, should be the end of the matter by anyone's standards.

Yet more frightening, many of those who still support Palin's political ambitions want that Christian theocracy.

You are right, and I would add that Palin and her fans believe in democracy only to the extent it functions within a theocracy. To them, anything less is contemptible. She, and they, would be so at home in Calvin's Geneva or (if they were Muslim) in 21st Century Iran. Facts are relevant only so far as they support Godliness. Unfortunately, the abstractions of tolerance and fairness that underlie democracy, are beyond the comprehension of many folks. They will follow over a cliff a cheerleader, like Palin, who has the ability to articulate their own ignorance into some sort of twisted world view.

Her nonsense has to be opposed every day because otherwise she will keep repeating it until it acquires the patina of the factual. Opposing the ridiculous is one of our duties as citizens of a still great democracy.

And of course she has to pave The Way to the Apocalypse, ""I disagree with the Obama administration on that," Palin told Walters. "I believe that the Jewish settlements should be allowed to be expanded upon, because that population of Israel is, is going to grow. More and more Jewish people will be flocking to Israel in the days and weeks and months ahead." She believes that she will live to see the End Times, and she is willing to bring it about.

Christopher,

I am amused that you devote your time and waste column space for a thinly veiled and pompous attack on Sarah Palin. Unlike our dear leader, Palin didn't not spend two years trying to convince everyone how smart she is. I am still waiting for those Columbia an Yale transcripts.

My recollection is that your 2008 reason for supporting BHO was his "first rate mind"--the basis for that description being his penning of "Dreams of My Father" (I think that is the title).

That book was the perfect foil for vacuous, elite, ivy leaguers always trying to appear to be the most reasonable, tolerant intelligent person in the room. You know, you put the word "smart" in front of something and every liberal, ivy league graduate and uninformed emoticrat (emotional democrat) jumps on board like a lemming.

Apparently, Bill Ayers is being cited for ghost writing the book based on reasearch and comparison between Dreams and the much more pedestrian "Audacity of Hope." And, apparently, Ayers is not denying it. Ahh, the beautiful thing that is the ego of the anarchist Ayers.

So, Christo, why don't you write a column--or whatever you call this thing-about how you've been punked. Yes, that is a rhetorical question.

Marcyj,

I figured I would ferret out at least one emoticrat. I just gave a nod to my Harvard diploma hanging on the wall for providing me my superior skills of prediction and speculation. But really, provoking a female emoticrat with some trumped up axe to grind against Palin is just too easy. I think I could have done it just going to community college.

Have a good one!!

Marjorie2...double check your Harvard degree, and make sure it qualifies you to talk about lemmings. Just to educate your supposedly Ivy League a bit...lemmings do not follow each other to their demise. It is a myth, and an illusion, as are many other of your beliefs and opinions. Read books...kill your TV, and destroy your car. Save humanity.

Ayers is not denying it writing Obama's book. But Glenn Beck has still not spoken up to deny the rumors that he raped and murdered a young girl in 1990. All he has done is try to sue the Concerned Americans who were Asking Questions. Fortunately, the courts came out on the side of Freedom of Speech--yet Beck still refuses to speak. Personally, I don't believe that Glenn Beck raped and murdered this girl, or any of the other girls whose murder he has been linked to. He may not have either raped OR murdered them. But I do find it disturbing that he refuses to clear the air. Americans have a right to the Truth.
