Palin's Bus Hoax

BS Top - McGinnis Palin Sara D. Davis / Getty Images On her book tour, Sarah Barracuda pretends to be one of the people. But she's really winging across the country on a private jet.

As much of her entourage, including HarperCollins publicist Tina Andreadis, risked a collective case of White Line Fever, covering more than 3,000 road miles during the book tour’s first week, Sarah Palin herself seems to have remained above it all, apparently cosseted in the luxury of a Gulfstream II 12-passenger jet rented from Universal Jet Aviation of Boca Raton, Florida, at a cost of more than $4,000 per hour.

More than two weeks ago, quoting Andreadis, USA Today reported that Palin would be “making two and sometimes three stops a day, traveling in a bus painted with the cover of her book.” And just before the tour started, Palin herself said on her Facebook page: “I’ll post our progress from the road.” To further the illusion, the populist heroine gave televised interviews from the bus, including one to Greta Van Susteren en route to Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

To further the illusion, the populist heroine gave televised interviews from the bus, including one to Greta Van Susteren en route to Fort Bragg.

Last week I was in The Villages, the fantastical Back to the Future-style retirement enclave north of Orlando, when Palin popped out the front door of the bus to greet the thousand or so worshipers gathered outside Barnes & Noble. I thought she sure looked good for someone who had been riding a bus for a week, changing diapers—as she said—all the way. Publicist Andreadis, by contrast, had the worn and harried look of someone who had been earning an honest living by riding a bus for a week.

It seems now that Palin hasn’t been on the bus, except for short hops between local airports and hotels and book-signing sites. Instead, as first reported by the Alaskan blog Palingates, she’s apparently been aboard UJT750, the Gulfstream American twin-jet that she first boarded at Westchester County airport shortly after noon on November 18, bound for Grand Rapids, Michigan, and the first stop on her tour.

The full activity log for UJT750 can be found here. The bottom line is that the plane’s goings and comings track Palin’s tour perfectly: from Grand Rapids to Washington, Pa. and then to Rochester, N.Y., Roanoke, Va., Fayetteville, N.C., Birmingham, Ala., and Jacksonville and Orlando.

On November 25, the plane carried Palin, her parents, her two youngest children and her Aunt Katie to Pasco, Washington, for Thanksgiving. And there it sat, at Tri-Cities Airport in Pasco, for four full days, which is a lot of inactivity for a plane that rents for more than $4,000 an hour. But it was Thanksgiving weekend and the Pasco-Richland area was where Palin wanted to be.

Palin apparently returned to New York Sunday night. At least UJT750 was scheduled to take off from Tri-Cities at 6:55 p.m. EST with an 11:30 p.m. arrival at Teterboro, N.J., anticipated. Her next signing is not until Thursday, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Presumably, she’ll fly to Fayetteville and then board her bus again for the short ride to the local Sam’s Club. Presumably, she’ll also fly over the much greater distances that separate the stops on the western half of her tour, which stretches from Dallas to Minneapolis. Will she continue to pretend she’s riding the bus?

I emailed Tina Andreadis and Jonathan Burnham, HarperCollins’s publisher, yesterday to ask:

--How much is Universal Jet Aviation charging?

--Is HarperCollins paying?

--Will Sarah continue to fly throughout the second half of the tour?

--Does anyone else ever ride on the plane with her?

--Can you give me a list of where she actually stayed overnight from Nov. 18 until her arrival in Tri-Cities?

It matters not much about the bus vs the plane. What matters is this women's character, sense of integrity and intelligence. In each instance she falls short. Why must she USE her children. She comes out with one on her arm for the general introduction and then hands the child off. What is this about? What's real about keeping your children up at all times of the day or night to enhance one's image. And, what has she done? I can't imagine her representing our country to other heads of state. Will the children be used there too. I think we must require serious leadership and intelligence from our officials. Afterall, look what happened with George W. Dumbness got us into a horrible mess because we preferred so-called style over substance.

Not to mention, that she can hardly express herself in a coherent sentence. This is why she so poorly expressed herself about seeing Russia, reading and an inability to recall important supreme court decisions. I think all us need to stop. take a deep breath. See Palin for what she is... A reflection of our ignorance.

The bright side of this story is that most of the folks in this country of voting age already know this woman is a phony and a fake. They have plenty of evidence, going back over a year, that this is so. The fact that she's lying about her bus tour is worth little more than a yawn, at this point.

She must be thanking god every day that her and McCain lost the election. She's doing better now than if she had become Vice President. She's making more money than the VP office pays, and has little to do but fly around and self promote.

I'm from the Orlando area and those old folks in the Villages are rabid when it comes to their "Christian values" and "Christian darlings" like SP. Now this is the same The Villages where rampant STD's were breaking out because these old folks were getting it on without protection.

Gotta love them Christian Values. Those old folks couldn't care less that she traveled by private jet as long as she stroked 'em and told 'em what they wanted to hear. I watched them on my local news last week and almost gagged.

On the scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the most disingenuous piece of crap I've ever read, that scores a solid 11. Let's look at the facts - it's not something journalists are supposed to do anymore these days, but humor me:

- on Wednesday the 18th of November, private jet UJT 750 flies from Teterboro (NJ) to Westchester (NY) to pick up Gov. Palin and her family members and personal aides to fly her to the place of the start of her bus tour, namely Grand Rapids (Mi). That same afternoon, the jet flies ahead to Washington County airport (Pa).

- Gov. Palin and her entourage then set off on a three day whistlestop bus tour of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. That's 650 miles in three days, with six stops in total. Not a bus tour?

- It's only three days later, on the 21st of November, that they use the private jet again to fly to Rochester (NY). Should they have done the five hour, 300 mile journey by bus, just to satisfy Mr. McGinniss' craving for authenticity?

- On the evening of the same day (still the 21st), the jet flies them to the place of the next event, namely Roanoake (Va). A mere 550 miles, so Gov. Palin could easily have taken the bus, right? I mean, she would certainly have made it on time for her next event, which wasn't till 11am the next morning. Sure, she'd be dead on arrival, but hey: if Joe McGinniss says that's what it takes, then that's what it takes.

- late at night on the 21st, after having dropped the Palin gang off in Roanoke, the jet flies on ahead to Fayetteville (NC). Gov. Palin does the book signing in Roanoke, then jumps on a different jet to fly to Asheville for a private meeting and dinner with the Rev. Billy Graham and his son and daughter. Since this meeting was mainly devoted to the subject of religion, Joe McGinniss would probably have preferred it if Gov. Palin had donned herself in sackcloth and ashes and crawled the entire 260 mile distance on her hands and knees. Let's call that one a missed opportunity.

- Gov Palin and crew rejoin the jet on the 23rd in Fayetteville, following the book signing event at Fort Bragg. Apparently, the Palins did the maths and came to the conclusion that it was impossible to cover the 500 mile stretch from Fayeteville to Birmingham (AL) in the two hours that they had until the next event. Let's put this one down to bad scheduling (we gotta blame her for something, right, Joe?).

- The Birmingham event is a great success, with thousands of people shouting her name and... Sorry, that's not what McGinniss wants to hear. Let's talk flights. On the evening of the 23rd, the private jet (that's private as in: not state-owned. Is that still allowed in the age of Obama, you ask? That will the subject of our next investigation) takes Gov. Palin from Birmingham to Jacksonville (FL), the place of the first of her three stops in the Sunshine State. The jet flies ahead to the destination of her final stop in the state, Orlando.

- Gov Palin covers the distance between the events by bus. That's another 2 stops and 200 miles on this non-bus tour. At the end of the first part of her book tour, for some reason, she decides against covering the 2,990 miles to Tri-Cities (WA) by bus, and instead opts for flying. Strange, I know.

So what's the point of this non-story? Ultimately, it's the same as the wardrobe saga. Liberal propagandists want you to believe that Palin is a fake populist, someone who claims to live frugally but really loves to live the high live. A sort of John Kerry in drag, if you like. It's their desperate attempt at stopping people from saying that she's "one of us". After all, how can she really be "like me" if she flies a private jet? Answer: she can, because she is. Doesn't matter if she flies a private jet, or even Air Force One: to your average, hard working American, she'll always be just Sarah from Alaska. And that is the way it is, Joe.

Brucenahin has a point. I say this as an Obama supporter. I expect a free press to be objective and report news. This isn't big news, but it was an interesting short piece since I have heard quite a bit about this bus tour. It may be the publisher or it may be Ms Palin, but someone set up an image of her traveling by bus across the US and she did not do exactly that. However, the reporting changes to speculation of what would her supporters think with an overwhelmingly obvious point of view. Obviously, her supporters at this stage will think that it is ok -- free country and all... that is why they are called supporters. As long as scoops and news are less interesting to readers/viewers than opinions supported, we all lose. I am progressive (liberal implies libertarian in most countries) and I am a vet. So no, I am not a communist or socialist. There is a difference. And I think the sad part of comments like osea65 is it is venom and rage against someone they deem weaker. If Palin represents Christian values, and I do believe she tries to, then I would submit that it is not Christ-like to encourage such rage against someone who chooses not to think like you. Or in the case of osea65, rage against someone who chooses to think.

Right on there....Who cares about it. Like someone said earlier, she can travel anyway she wants, the bottow line is, she's an empty dress that will never, ever turn into an American version of Golda Meir. In fact, I'd like to apoligize to Mrs Meir for putting her in the same sentence.

NASA scientist Gavin Schmidt:"Critics" are using language used in science and interpreting itin a completely different way". Wired's Threat level blog reported on November 20, that Schmidt a climate scientist at NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said: "There's nothing in the e-mails that shows global warming is a hoax.... There's no funding by nefarious groups. There's no politics in any of these things; nobody from the [U.N.} telling people what to do. There's nothing hidden, no manipulation. It's just scientists talking about science, and they're talking relatively openly as people in private e-mails generally are freer with their thoughts then they would be in a public forum. The few quotes that are being pulled out of context. People are using language used in science and interpreting it in a completely different way." AMEN! This is Palin the PRIVATE CITIZEN's money...not like BO and MO taking AF1 and AF2 both just so MO and kids could go shopping in London....on the taxpayers dollar...while we're smack in the middle of recession...and BO is telling us it's the patriotic thing to share the wealth straight across the board...guess he meant all Americans except himself and his taxcheating cronies, eh? The Palin Company can get to the book signings and speaking engagements however they please and it suits this middle class American just fine. The boy writing this story is obviously pulling out his shovel to try digging something up on Palin, but I can think of better uses for that shovel and it deals with cleaning out the crap because it is getting deep. You apparently don't think it's a non-story considering the amount of time and effort you put into your response.
You totally missed the point. It isn't that she's using a private jet. It's that she's lying to people to try to make them think she's NOT using one.

The comment was meant to illustrate the hypocracy of the left when it comes to reporting. Palin using a bus and a plane during her book tour is a non-story. Al Gore has a carbon footprint the size of Texas and yet he wants each of us to give up our way of life to save the planet. Newsflash...the planet is not in danger...and neither are we. AGW is a farce. Gore is a liar. Gore has made hundreds of millions off the lies. But here we have a "hot" story about someone who uses a plane and a bus during a book tour. Good use of journalistic resources.

That's some argument! Al Gore doesn't lie? His whole Global Warming Scam is a lie!

Saint Sarah is not going to cause energy bills to go sky rocketing and cause poor people to have no heat in the winter and die due to Al Gore's tax on "Air" which has just been provin' to be the biggest hoax in history!

No, we don't plan on seeing any Climate Gate stories in the Left Wing media DB included until they're dragged kicking and screaming to the story as usual.

Al Gore is a hypocritical piece of excrement.

Al Gore is not going to commission a Row Boat to travel the world. He is going to travel it in his private jet as he spews out to others the danger and peril to the planet that is inherent when being so irresponsible as to fly around in what?

Can we say it together?

P-R-I-V-A-T-E J-E-T!

You can call out SP all you want. Go for it.

She hasn't been scamming the world for well over the last 20 years trying to do the shakedown on every American, rich and poor while padding her own pockets.

I'm just sure that any moment now some wingnut scientific genius is going to post the smoking gun e-mail from the hacked bunch that proves all their statements. Meantime I'm going t wonder who's paying for this jet ride Caribou Barbie is enjoying. I'm hoping it's her publisher and they add the cost of promotion to the price of the book. Isn't that what the wingers are always claiming, that such costs are passed through to the consumer? It wouldn't matter to the palinistas anyway, they've already coronated the princess of the frozen north and can't back down now.

It's Global Climate Change, it's always been Global Climate Change. The guys who called it Global Warming called it that because that is what is what is happening. The world is getting hotter VERY rapidly and we (humans) are causing it. But that causes Global Climate Change because local events may vary. If you don't know that, even as a living in a dream world denier of reality, then you haven't been paying attention or choose to (surprise, surprise) ignore the facts for your own private fantasy world.

Marionette (such a good name for a liberal puppet, so I'll stick with it)...what exactly is the lie you've got your panties in a bunch about? Please quote Palin where she said she'd be exclusively traveling by bus.

It's also funny how you neo-comms hold a private citizen up to such high standards and falsely accuse her of lying about something that doesn't even effect you. Yet, you constantly give a pass to Obama, who tells blatant lies about things that do concern you.

You're drowning in Kool-Aid, puppet.

Holy Cow! Alaskans kill the wolves to protect the moose which is the "roast beef" of their food supply. Wonder if any libs who get upset about killing wolves (in remote areas) every think where that hamburger patty came from? Why aren't you upset about the slaughter house using a kill-stick with a 22 bullet place right on the forehead of that steer? You think about how that lil cow kicks when it falls over next time you unwrap the foil around that nice juicy burger. Also, you get puckered up about killing predators of the food chain, but to abort a human fetus is ok????????

|

@honeywagon. Cows are not a wild species that is potentially endangered, nor are they considered a key species in a ecosystem, ie, one that helps keep other species in balance. Aerial bounty hunting is purely fun for sadistic a$$h0l3s, not "protecting the food supply." Yet, people like you don't care about the impact antienvironmental decisions have on the food supply and living of the native people in Alaska, do you?

This article shouldn't bother anyone. Obama spent $7,200,000 to take his family and friends on vacation and Pelosi spends 1.6 million almost every week to fly out to good 'ol California. I can't say for absolutely certain but I think the taxpayer pays for that. Palin was in her own pocket.

I'm not a Palin-supporter, but if she had said she was flying between book signings and sleeping in hotels, I wouldn't have cared one jot. That's her privilege. But, it's the claiming one thing and doing another is typical Palin behavior.
