From pills to Elin impersonating her husband on a text, two inside sources provide Gerald Posner a full account of what happened the night Tiger crashed his SUV—and triggered a scandal.
While the Tiger Woods drama has played out in an extraordinarily public way, the details from before and after the golfer’s Thanksgiving night car crash—the trigger for one of the costliest sports-related scandals ever—have remained shrouded in mystery. Two sources who know Tiger’s wife, Elin Nordegren, and have discussed various details of the story with her, have corroborated a minute-by-minute account that answers the majority of the questions surrounding what might be the most expensive car crash in history.
Among their revelations:
- Just before Tiger’s affair with Rachel Uchitel was reported in the National Enquirer, he put Uchitel on the phone with his wife for a half-hour, so she could convince Elin the relationship was platonic.
- Elin confirmed her lingering suspicions about Tiger’s affair with Uchitel by impersonating her husband in text messages with Uchitel, prompting the rage that led to Woods fleeing his house.
- Tiger had taken the sedative Ambien that night, and was in a stupor when Elin woke him following her sting operation on Uchitel.
- After his wife’s wakeup, Tiger sent Uchitel a panicky text warning her that Elin had discovered the affair and implying that divorce was imminent. Elin quickly found this text as well, which precipitated her chasing him out of the house with a golf club.
- Tiger did not immediately return home when he was released from the hospital, likely explaining why Elin did not accede to much-publicized requests from visiting police officers to chat with Woods.
Both sources spoke on the condition of anonymity, because Elin Nordegren did not give them permission to discuss her conversations with them.
Shortly after 1 a.m. in Florida, Elin began texting Uchitel, pretending to be Tiger, according to both sources. Elin wrote, “I miss you,” and asked, “When are we seeing each other again?”
• Gerald Posner: Rachel Uchitel—Mob Princess? During the run-up to Thanksgiving, these sources say that Tiger gave Elin advance warning that the National Enquirer was about to run a story claiming that he had an affair with Rachel Uchitel, a New York- and Las Vegas-based nightlife entrepreneur, who had just reportedly finished a torrid affair a few months earlier with married actor David Boreanaz. Woods swore to Elin that the Enquirer story was false and that he had only met Uchitel once or twice at social outings.
Elin remained suspicious, according to one of the sources. On November 25, the day before Thanksgiving, as Internet rumors spread of the about-to-be-released Enquirer story, Tiger convinced Uchitel to talk to Elin. The two women spoke by phone for about half an hour, and after the conversation, according to this source, she was satisfied that the relationship was platonic.
The next day, Thanksgiving, Elin learned some of the Enquirer’s specifics about the purported affair, including a recent rendezvous in Australia. That evening, the two argued. Tiger decided to end the bickering , both sources confirm, by taking Ambien and going to sleep. (According to what Elin has told one of the sources, Woods regularly had trouble sleeping, and Ambien was his primary sleep aid.)
After Woods fell asleep, Elin looked through his cellphone, both sources confirmed. There she found text messages to Uchitel’s number—Uchitel was apparently listed in Tiger’s cellphone under her real name—and among them she discovered one that said, “You are the only one I’ve loved.”
Shortly after 1 a.m. in Florida, Elin began texting Uchitel, pretending to be Tiger, according to both sources. Elin wrote, “I miss you,” and asked, “When are we seeing each other again?”
Uchitel texted back, seemingly surprised that Woods was awake. Elin specifically felt, one source told me, that this response indicated that the two of them spoke earlier that night, before Tiger took his Ambien. At that point, Elin called Uchitel, who answered thinking it was Tiger calling. Both sources said that Elin said something approximating, “I knew it was you.”
Uchitel’s surprised reply, according to what Elin told one source: “Oh f--k.” She immediately hung up.
Normally quiet and controlled, Elin later told one source she became enraged and woke Tiger by screaming at him. He seemed disoriented, still in a stupor from the Ambien. The fight ratcheted up quickly.
But then chaos ensued when she grabbed his cellphone when he came out after locking himself in the bathroom for several minutes. Both sources confirm that Tiger had apparently, shortly after waking up, sent another short text to Uchitel warning that Elin had uncovered the affair, that he was about to pack, and that a divorce might be imminent.
Elin didn’t tell Woods what she’d seen, one source says. She simply exploded, trying to hit him on the chest and arms with her fists, and then finally chasing him from the house while she wielded a golf club. Shoeless, he ran into the car and barreled out of the driveway before careening off a fire hydrant and then smashing into a tree. Neither source said they knew the details of how the rear windows in the Escalade were knocked out, though one source says that the story Tiger told police at the accident scene about Elin smashing them in an attempt to free him from the wreck was a lie designed to protect his wife.
When he was released later from the hospital, Tiger was whisked off to an undisclosed location, Elin too furious to allow him back that afternoon. This likely explains why Elin told police who arrived at their mansion outside Orlando that Woods did not care to speak with them then, once saying he was asleep and couldn’t even see them.
Woods’ representatives did not reply to multiple requests for comment. Sorrel Trope, the 82-year-old dean of Los Angeles celebrity divorce lawyers, who has been advising Elin, also did not answer a request for comment. Gloria Allred, the attorney for Rachel Uchitel, wrote by email, “We have no comment on this.”
According to one friend, Elin remains furious about the events on Thanksgiving, but will wait for the golfer to finish any rehab treatment he’s undergoing before making a final decision on whether to pursue a divorce.

Cheetah is a total lame brained idiot for: 1) Not telling the truth in the first place 2) Not locking his phone with a code so that only he could access it 3) Leaving the phone out where Elin could find it 4) Deciding to show how "truthful" he was by having Elin talk to Uchitel which obviously raised Elin's suspicions even further 5) Caught himself and Uchitel in a total lie to his wife.
Personally, I don't see this marriage having a chance of surviving. Elin's wait and see attitude on Cheetah's rehab is more than acceptable at this juncture.

More likely Posner is talking to Uchitel...who based on her $1million deal is not suppose to be talking...but hey if a DAily BEast writer is willing to lie...all is right with the world. What Daily BEast and Posner don't realize is that Elin is a European and she won't talk to the media, just as both her parents and family have shown enormous constraintl. It would eat all of the crazy reporters alive for him to come back and never speak of the incident. They are going to make up what you want any way, so why bother telling the story. Tiger just come on back and enter the next tour and lets move on. Give her the divorce she wants and apologize to your family for whatever actually took place and let's get back to playing some golf. On Thanksgiving Day, after he and Elin and the family had Turkey Dinner, he spent the rest of the afternoon on the couch watching football and texting Rachel. After each received and sent text message he would clear his message box to rid himself of the evidence. Sometime in between there, one of his Orlando buds called him to see if he wanted to get together at the Clubhouse to play poker with the guys, to which Tiger said yes. Tiger left the house around 7:30 to go play poker, and left behind his cell phone....and one message he had forgot to delete from Rachel.
When Tiger returned home around 11:30 -12 that night, Elin confronted him about the text message in the phone, and the started a heated discussion to its regards. According to what I was told, there was more "incriminating evidence" than just the text message (i.e. photos). Tiger tried to play it off to Elin by telling her she was reading too much in to it, and did not know the story, etc. Tiger went upstairs to chance into his gym shorts and t - shirt, came back down, and Elin confronted him again; to which Tiger gave the same story. Tiger sat down in a chair in the living room, and Elin sat acorss from him urging Tiger to just come clean. Tiger stayed to his guns and denied everything. At one point Tiger turned away to look at the TV, and as he turned back, Elin hit him on the right side of the face with the head of a 9 - iron. When she struck Tiger, she put a huge gash in the right side of his face next to his nose (causing his nose to bruise some), and virtually knocking two of his upper teeth out, and breaking the bone on the upper right side. Tiger ran scared as hell out of the house (which is why he had on no shoes) with Elin swinging the golf club thoughout the hallway to the garage (i.e causing the severe damage which has been reported). Tiger hoped in the Escalade and tried to leave; and as we know Elin knocked out the windows in the Escalade. When Tiger crashed, Elin panicked and was not sure what to tell the police (which is why there are two conflicting stories from her). When this happened, Elin immediately called Mark Steinberg to tell him what happened, and Mark told Elin to tell him what hospital they were going to, and he would meet them there.
Tiger is transported to the hospital with Elin in the ambulance, and as they arrive Mark is there waiting for them. The people from the hospital and the doctors take Tiger in for X-Rays etc to check out the damage caused. The doctors tell Mark there is not much they can do to repair the teeth and the gash, but the doctor knows a cosmetic dentist and plastic surgeon in Phoenix who will make Tiger look as if nothing happened. Tiger tells Mark to get the jet ready and lets head to Phoenix to get this done. Friday after Tiger is released from the hospital, he does not return home, he and Mark board the plane for Phoenix . If you remember FHP kept showing up at Isleworth to talk to TIger, and was told by another FL attorney (who Tiger hired for PR reasons) Tiger was not ready to talk. Well now we know why, he was in Phoenix , and did not arrive back in Orlando until either late last Wednesday night or early Thursday morning. The surgeries were more intense than what they had originally planned, which meant Tiger was in PHX longer than he should have been. Upon arriving back in Orlando , Tiger and Elin have been in intense marriage conseling sessions (up to 6 to 7 hours a day) every day! Both Tiger and Elin have told the conselors they love each other, and want to make the marriage work. The reports you are reading on TMZ and RadarOnline are about 30% accurate at best according to Mark.
In regards to Tiger's boat being in Palm Beach this week, along with Rachel; that part is true. However, Tiger is not on the boat, and is not in Palm Beach ; and Rachel is not on the boat. Her parents live 6 blocks from where the boat is, but that is it. Tiger has not returned to his house at Isleworth since the day of the accident except for the therapy sessions. IMG has enlisted the assistance of one of its most recognized sports figures, and Tiger has taken up residence in his neighborhood; Bay Hill. IMG contacted Arnold Palmer because of the high regard in which Tiger holds Arnold . Arnold has agreed, and IMG has said if anyone can get through to Tiger, Arnold may be the only person who can based on his public persona when he was at the height of his game as well. The moving trucks being shown on TMZ and RadarOnline are moving out pictures and furniture which was damaged during their Thanksgiving Day argument; not of her moving out. Yes, Elin has retained a divorce attorney, but has not filed any papers, and as of yesterday had no intention on doing so. Tiger has not made any public appearances or statements due to the surgery and plastic surgery he had in PHX. It will be about another month if not more before he gets in front of a camera. Yes, Tiger is hitting golf balls late at ngiht at Bay Hill out of their teaching center (which is equipped with lights).

It is credible that this story came from Elin's friends. It actually casts Elin in a sympathetic light and supports her divorce strategy. The Woods' lost any reasonable right to claim privacy when Mr. Woods accepted the hundreds of millions in dollars of endorsements. It is legitimate for her to play the game through this type of story-planting, for reporters to cover it and for us to read it.

I agree, will this story never end? Nobody is ever going to know the truth. This family needs and deserves some time to heal. Money and greed for reporters, photogs, and so-called friends play a bigger part than they should. Stories being paid for, photos for money. Quite honestyly everyone I talked to are sick and tired of hearing and reading only this story. President Clinton got less publicity and he did the naughty in the White House. Get over yourselves! May I add, that his future is to be with Rachel,if the re,hab,does not work.Rachel will be an Angelina Jolie.But,good luck to Elin she never deserved all this lying,deceiving,she loved him and her home and everything they were building is a lie.The children are very loved and cared,for,poor Tiger's mom.Good Luck,Elin.

Uh, there's not much here that already couldn't have been deduced by someone with half a brain before their Thanksgiving turkey was cold. This isn't exactly "breaking news."
The detail of the fake text by Elin was interesting. But the Ambien stupor wasn't exactly surprising; everyone figured the guy was zoned out on booze or drugs when he crashed. And did anyone actually believe Elin broke the rear window to "save" Tiger?
I thought there would be a lot more detail than this when I read the headline. Disappointing story.

I don't want the staff at The Daily Beast to embarrass themselves by making a mistake and incorrectly blaming Elin Nordegren for something she didn't do. A Daily Beast reporter suggested that Elin should be jailed for abusing Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods was drunk and drugged up the night of the crash. And his hyper-sexuality is a result of the billions of cc's of testosterone in his system. No woman and very few men could win a fight against him when he's that jacked up. Our society as a whole needs to stop blaming the victims when powerful, wealthy men go on a rampage.

Tiger Woods had a "fat lip" but no other visible facial injuries when he met with Florida state troopers four days after the car accident outside his Home, according to a television report. Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Kim Montes told WESH-TV in Orlando on Wednesday that Woods and his attorney met with troopers on Dec. 1. Montes and other FHP officials did not immediately return several phone messages and e-mails from The Associated Press. The meeting at an undisclosed location in Orlando came after troopers tried for three days to meet with Woods about the accident in which his sport utility vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant and tree outside his home. The officers arranged the meeting to deliver a $164 citation for careless driving and to see if Woods had any injuries that were inconsistent with a car accident, Montes told the TV station. Woods had a "fat lip," but no other visible injuries and officers had no reason to believe the golfer was a victim of domestic violence, Montes told WESH-TV. Woods has not been seen in public since the accident. He announced on Dec. 10 that he was taking an indefinite leave of absence from the U.S. PGA Tour to focus on repairing his marriage after admitting his infidelity.

This is first and likely the last time that I will ever comment on 'story' like this.
There is no doubt that Tiger has some family issues. What kills me though is that people like Gerald Posner, Nancy Grace, Jane Velez-Mitchell and report snoop around and report tabloid stories that are strictly about private matters. They also take it upon themselves to "pile on" and "sit in judgment". I suspect that everyone has family issues of one kind or another and sadly, we all have our demons---- I guess that is with the exception of Posner et al and maybe some of Posner's cheerleaders.
Having followed golf career reasonably closely over the years, I know of absolutely no occasions where he has given any moral sermons, evangelized or counseled anyone on anything other than say "How to Hit a Better 7-iron Shot". He is not the POTUS, not an evangelist... hell, he's not even a Hollywood movie actor. Outside of his wife Elin and other family members, he owes an apology to absolutely no one who is in the public. Lastly, if Posner et al wanted to be fair, he would also report on the very positive contributions that Tiger Woods has made to society including MILLIONS of dollars raised through and for his foundation, The Tiger Woods Learning Center, Tiger Jam, etc. as well as the thousands of people that Tiger has brought into the game of golf. (I don't see a Gerald Posner Foundation anywhere.) Yeah, the press has the Constitutional right to report on this story, but my God, is any of this really anybody's business except Tiger, Elin's and the Woods' family. I don't think that a REAL reporter such as the late Walter Cronkite would've touched this story.

When this story first broke in the news I thought I remembered reading that Florida has an automatic jailing policy for a spouse that abuses the other spouse. No questions asked; into the slammer with you.
According to this story, not only did Erin threaten bodily harm to Tiger with the golf club (probably enough to constitute abuse by itself but, hey, I'm not a lawyer) but "trying to hit him on the chest and arms with her fists". Well, that sounds like physical abuse to me.
And that cut lip? Well, at this point I don't think it was caused by the car accident and I don't think anyone would believe it was anything but as a result of a physical blow of some kind by Erin.
What's my point? Well, putting aside the question of whether Tiger deserved Erin's abuse and anger, the fact remains that there is a double standard...indeed, two double standards:
1) I suspect Erin is getting away with not being jailed because she's female; and
2) Because of their celebrity and moneyed status they are getting preferential treatment by the police. If they were poor white trash, she'd be in jail, no questions asked.

Oh, yeah, it's just impossible to imagine how Tiger could possibly have cut his lip after smashing his car into a tree, doing massive damage to the front end and wheel, all without having a seatbelt on. First she is not a babysitter...she's his wife. However it is true she met him when Jarnevik, a golfer, for whom she was a nanny. He and his wife were family friends of Elin's parents. She was spending the summer as their nanny. Jarnevik was a fellow golfer and friend of Tiger and he introduced Elin and Tiger. She was NEVER one of those girls who follows athletes around. That is why Jarnevik was so pissed and said he wished he had never introduced Elin to Tiger...So get your stories straight. This is a terrific young woman from a good family!

Actually, no. That is not why Elin is getting away with not being jailed.
The reason is that the prosecutors know damn well that there is not a jury in the world that would convict her. If the whole affair was a movie everyone in the theater cheers for justice sake as Elin picks up the iron.
