As a white-supremacist leader in California, Jeff Hall often imagined an early death—but he still must have been surprised when it came May 1. That is because his killer was not a person he had vilified but rather his own 10-year-old son. Hall was a rising star within the National Socialist Movement, the nation’s largest white-supremacist group. He wore Nazi regalia and had a skull tattooed on the back of his shaved head. He even won 28 percent of the vote as a National Socialist for a seat on a local water district. Police say the boy intentionally shot Hall, but his motive is unknown.
