BP managed to place a containment device, known as a top hat, over a pipe leaking oil into the Gulf of Mexico, but already, officials are tempering their optimism. “It will be some time before we can confirm that this method will work and to what extent it will mitigate the release of oil into the environment," U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said. Allen added that a cut made into the pipe Thursday was not as smooth as he had hoped, making it more difficult to seal the top hat. Early Friday morning, oil still appeared to be flowing out. President Obama will arrive in Louisiana later on Friday, after canceling his trip to Australia and Indonesia. Obama, who handed BP a $69 million bill for cleanup on Thursday, said he was furious about the situation, which "is imperiling an entire way of life and an entire region for potentially years."
