Brazilian police on Tuesday made their largest single cash seizure in history, with millions of dollars in cash tucked away in an apartment thought to have been used by a former ally of President Michel Temer. A photograph released by police showed several large suitcases and cardboard boxes brimming with 100-real and 50-real banknotes, as authorities said they had so far counted the equivalent of $10.6 million and were still going. The apartment holding the cash, located in Salvador, was thought to have been used by Geddel Vieira Lima, Temer’s former congressional liaison. Lima resigned last year amid corruption allegations, while Temer continues to fend off bribery accusations. The Brazilian president recently dodged a corruption trial against him, though prosecutors are reportedly preparing new charges.
