The slogan of the Brexit campaign was “take back control,” but on Thursday night it was European Union leaders who were making decisions on Britain’s fate without Theresa May in the room. Luckily for her, they chose to be charitable and agreed to give Britain a delay to Brexit as the country’s lawmakers continue to fumble around for a way forward. EU leaders offered to delay Brexit until 22 May if lawmakers approve May’s deal in a possible third vote next week—a scenario that appears unlikely after two previous massive defeats. If it’s not approved, the delay will be shorter—until April 12—by which point the U.K. must set out some kind of alternative route or leave without a deal. EU officials were dumbfounded by May’s lack of planning for losing the vote. One told The Guardian: “[The meeting] was 90 minutes of nothing... She didn’t even give clarity if she is organizing a vote. Asked three times what she would do if she lost the vote, she couldn’t say. It was fucking awful. Dreadful. Evasive even by her standards.”
