SABER-RATTLING

North Korea held a massive rally of 100,000 people Thursday dedicated entirely to talking trash about its enemies, specifically the U.S. Kim Jong-il's cronies went so far as to direct a threat of a "fire shower of nuclear retaliation" at South Korea and the U.S. The event commemorated the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950. Some of the rhetoric seemed very reminiscent of the turmoil in Iran, as the regime accused the U.S. of meddling in their domestic affairs. The rally was held in front of a U.S. spy ship captured in international waters in 1968, which remains prominently docked in Pyongyang as a trophy of North Korea's supposed dominance.

Cough It Up
Mark Sanford
Mary Ann Chastain / AP Photo

Better late than never. Apparently deciding that two wrongs don’t make a right, Governor Mark Sanford said in a statement today that he would reimburse the state of South Carolina for a trip to Argentina on which he met his mistress. “While the purpose of this trip was an entirely professional and appropriate business development trip, I made a mistake while I was there in meeting with the woman who I was unfaithful to my wife with,” Sanford said. “That has raised some very legitimate concerns and questions, and as such I am going to reimburse the state for the full cost of the Argentina leg of this trip.” According to documents released by the state Department of Commerce, airfare for the trip was $8,644.03 and more than $9,000 on Sanford’s expenses alone.

Remembrance
Michael Jackson
Getty Images

In the wake of Michael Jackson’s passing on Thursday night, some of the biggest names in Hollywood shared their reactions. “I can’t stop crying over the sad news,” Madonna said to People. “I have always admired Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greats.” Jackson’s ex-wife—and daughter of fellow “king” Elvis Presley—Lisa Marie Presley said, “I am so very sad and confused with every emotion possible. I am heartbroken for his children who I know were everything to him and for his family. This is such a massive loss on so many levels, words fail me.” Music producer Quincy Jones, who produced Jackson’s Thriller album, said that Jackson “had it all—talent, grace, professionalism and dedication.” He added, “I’ve lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him.” Jackson was preparing for a 50-date tour in London at the time of his cardiac arrest, for which $85 million in tickets had already been sold. Some fans paid into the multi-thousands for their tickets to Jackson’s first major performance in more than a decade.

TESTIMONIES

Although he may have put himself in jeopardy by doing so, the Iranian doctor who tried to save Neda's life has come out to address her final moments. Dr. Arash Hejazi, who is studying at a university in England, revealed his identity as one of the men depicted in the viral video of Neda's death. He noted that Neda died in less than a minute, and his attempt to stop bleeding from the wound in her chest was unsuccessful. Hejazi says that he did not sleep for three nights after the incident. He also mentioned that the Basij member who supposedly shot Neda was quickly grabbed from his motorcycle by protesters, who took his ID card. As he was accosted by protesters, the Basij shouted that he did not want to kill her. Hejazi said that he believes his statements will prevent him from returning to Iran, but that he didn't want Neda's "blood to have been shed in vain."

HP Highlight - Brown Sarah Palin

Alaska's pugnacious governor is at it, again. Having battled late night comedian David Letterman for the better part of the month, Sarah Palin is turning her attention now to an amateur blogger in Alaska. Linda Kellen Biegel, who blogs under the name Celtic Diva, photoshopped an image of local conservative radio host Eddie Burke onto a photo of Palin cradling son Trig, allegedly suggesting an overly close relationship between the governor and at least one member of the press. A Palin spokesperson told CNN that "the mere idea of someone doctoring the photo of a special needs baby is appalling." The issue, she explained, requires immediate attention from the president: "It is past time to restore decency in politics and real tolerance for all Americans. The Obama administration sets the moral compass for its party." Biegel defended herself email: "WE'RE MAKING FUN OF EDDIE BURKE!!!!!!," not baby Trig.

Sad news
CS - Cronkite
AP Photo

It's been a hard day in entertainment news, and it's about to get harder. The New York Times reported today that Walter Cronkite is gravely ill with cerebrovascular disease and, according to his family members, "not expected to recuperate." "He is resting at home surrounded by family, friends and a wonderful medical team," his three children said. Cronkite's family told TVNewser, a blog, that he had been suffering from his disease for several years. The CBS News anchor was oftentimes described as "the most trusted man in America" during his work on CBS Evening News from 1960-81.

Bachmannalia

Did you know that the U.S. Census is really a secret plot for mass imprisonment? Well, if not, you haven’t been paying enough attention to Michele Bachmann. The crazy congresswoman from Minnesota was on Fox News on Thursday, and said that that Americans should not comply with the census because it allowed the internment of the Japanese during WWII. “If we look at American history, between 1942 and 1947,” she said, “the data that was collected by the census bureau was handed over to the FBI and other organizations, at the request of President Roosevelt, and that’s how the Japanese were rounded up and put into the internment camps. I’m not saying that’s what the Administration is planning to do. But I am saying that private, personal information that was given to the census bureau in the 1940s was used against Americans to round them up.”

HP Highlight - ADF Madoff Family Splinters

A ride on the New York subway isn't so bad--unless you have a New York Post photographer hounding you the whole time. A dogged photographer snapped a hilarious picture of Ruth Madoff riding the F train, ironically sitting in front of an advertisement for a 99-cent cell phone. "Are you having fun embarrassing me--and ruining my life?" Ruth said to the Post photographer. The article notes that Ruth is looking much less upper-class than she did during her and husband Bernie's glory days; her clothes are not too fashionable and her hair is unkempt.

Michael Jackson was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after going into cardiac arrest and died this afternoon, according to TMZ. Jackson had been rehearsing in LA for his highly-anticipated series of concerts in London, though he has been dogged by rumors of being physically unable to make it through all the routines. Jackson's mother and brothers are at the hospital. He is survived by his children Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson, and Prince "Blanket" Michael Jackson Jr. Producer Quincy Jones said of Jackson's death: "I am absolutely devastated at this tragic and unexpected news. For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words."

SUPREME COURT

The Supreme Court ruled that a strip search of an Arizona teen by her middle-school vice principal was illegal, though they stopped short of holding the official liable for the search. Vice Principal Kerry Wilson asked Savana Redding to take off her clothes and stretch out her underwear waistband so that Wilson could make sure she wasn't hiding prescription-strength ibuprofen, which another student accused the eighth-grader of handing out. Redding, who is now in college, had her case dismissed by two courts before the Supreme Court's ruling. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg dissented, writing that Wilson should be held financially liable for the search. "Wilson's treatment of Redding was abusive and it was not reasonable for him to believe that the law permitted it," Ginsburg said.

RACE TO 2012

Governor Haley Barbour is taking over for disgraced Mark Sanford as chair of the Republican Governors Association, but he's also inheriting much more from Sanford. Sanford was the 2012 presidential race's real Southerner, an honor he now cedes to Barbour, Marc Ambinder argues. At a New Hampshire Republican gathering Wednesday night, Barbour urged inclusion upon the Party. "You're in the White House for eight or 12 years, you become a top-down party, I don't care if these are Republicans or Democrats," he told reporters. "When you get out, you're liberated to rebuild your party from the bottom up." Barbour is visiting Iowa this week, which feeds speculation that he will be running in 2012. He vehemently denies all presidential ambitions.

Sir Allen Stanford, accused of running a $7 billion Ponzi scheme from the island of Antigua, was in court on Thursday, seeking bail while he awaits trial. Prosecutors are pushing hard for him to be denied bail, arguing that he has the motivation and the means to flee the country. Stanford surrendered to the FBI last month, and has been in custody since. The billionaire, who once lived a lavish lifestyle on the island paradise of Antigua, came into the courtroom in handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit.

It's hard to imagine an odder couple: Snoop Dogg and Buzz Aldrin have teamed up to on a rap single to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing next month, the Times of London reports.  For the track, the second man on the moon took on the pseudonym Doc Rendezvous and rapped, "I’m the spaceman, I’m the rocket man, it’s time to venture far, let’s take a trip to Mars, our destiny is to the stars.”  Snoop Dogg said that Aldrin's rap was "hot right there, man. That's gangsta." In the video, on the site Funny or Die, producer Quincy Jones and fellow rap stars Talib Kweli and Soulja Boy give props to the aging astronaut. Proceeds from the song and video sales will go to Aldrin's nonprofit ShareSpace, a nonprofit that supports space advocacy and education programs.

Apparently, Americans love sequels. Case in point: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made than $55 million in ticket sales on its opening day yesterday, easily the best Wednesday release ever, according to Variety. The previous record holder for best Wednesday opening was Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which grossed $44.2 million. Transformers, which is playing at more than 4,200 theaters domestically, also had great opening numbers in Australia, Korea, the U.K., and Japan. The film's killer opening day sets the stage for it to surpass the $152.4 million earned by Spider-Man 2 over its first five days.

Cheech and Chong have nothing on Tasmania's animals. The Times of London reports that in Tasmania, the world's largest producer of legally grown opium for the pharmaceutical market, the beasts of the field like the strong stuff. During a Wednesday parliamentary committee meeting the Tasmanian Attorney-General said that "we have a problem with wallabies entering poppy fields, getting high as a kite and going around in circles." She added, "Then they crash. We see crop circles in the poppy industry from wallabies that are high.” While her office played down the comments as a joke she was making to colleagues, farmers in Tasmania have reported the odd instance of wild deer "acting strangely" in the fields, or of sheep sent to graze on the scrubble as following each other around in large circles.

Trouble Brewing

While Iran's anti-democratic crackdown is garnering the world's attention, trouble may be brewing in Iraq's upcoming election as well. According to The Washington Post, Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki's government has been using increasingly coercive measures to break the opposition. Political rivals have been arrested and threatened in Diyala and Basra, leading to comparisons to Iraq's former leader, Saddam Hussein. An aide to Maliki told the Post that while his boss was not a dictator, he has a "strong personality" and a willingness to push the limits of the constitution. Some are worried that Maliki's tactics could lead to new divisions in the already violently split nation. "These political tensions are undermining the security of the country, and I'm worried about it," Barham Salih, the deputy prime minister and a Kurdish leader, told the Post.

Labeling Judge Sonia Sotomayor a racist and suggesting she was a not-too-bright affirmative action case may have backfired for Republicans, but GOP Senators are hoping that they'll have better luck going after her on gun rights. Los Angeles Times reports that Senate Republicans plan on bringing up Sotomayor's previous rulings on gun rights in the hopes of dividing conservative Democrats, many of whom are pro-gun. The ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, Jeff Sessions, said in a press conference on Wednesday that he would bring up a recent case in which Sotomayor ruled that federal gun rights do not apply to states, a decision Sessions said "would eviscerate the 2nd Amendment in many parts of the country."

Perez Hilton may have temporarily lost the battle—for once—when the manager for the Black Eyed Peas allegedly attacked him, but he intends to win the war in court. The celebrity blogger filed a civil lawsuit today in Los Angeles against Polo Molina, who he claims hit him three times for comments he made about the Black Eyed Peas’ new album on his website. Perez is seeking over $25,000 in unspecified damages for battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress, which he claimed violated his First Amendment rights. “Whether you love Perez or hate him, he is entitled to his freedom of speech without fear of physical violence,” said Bryan Freedman, Hilton’s lawyer. Hilton, an openly gay man, also called band member will.i.am a “faggot” and refused to apologize at the request of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Conservatives may not like President Obama, but their favorite channel is having the time of its life under the new administration. Primetime viewership is up 35% compared with last year and is now averaging about as many viewers as the top three other cable news networks combined, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Obama has proved a boon to the network, according to the network's senior vice president for programming, Bill Shine, as FOX viewers will "see some sides of an issue that they won't see elsewhere." The president's certainly noticed: in a recent interview with CNBC he said that he's got "one television station entirely devoted to attacking my administration," a swipe at FOX News.

BFS - Bernanke 10/20

Appointed by President Bush and well regarded by pro-business Republicans for years, the financial crisis and President Obama's election have turned Fed Chair Ben Bernanke into a surprising villain among conservatives. Bernanke takes questions at a hearing Thursday in the House and Republicans are expected to go after him for what they consider an unwarranted expansion of government since the economic collapse last Fall. Currently, a memo written by Republicans is circulating around the House that cites documents and emails from the Fed alleging that Bernanke forced Bank of America to complete its merger with Merrill Lynch against BOA's will.

Gooooal! In a stunning upset, the U.S. beat Spain, the world's best-ranked team, in a memorable semifinal match at the Confederate Cup tournament in South Africa. The win ended the reigning Europeans champions' 15-match winning streak and 35-match unbeaten streak. The 2-0 victory, described as "an absolute stunner" by ESPN, featured goals from Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey and a strong defensive effort from the team in keeping the elite Spanish team scoreless. Earlier in the week, the U.S. pulled off an improbable three-goal win over Egypt to end up in the tournament semifinals. On Sunday the team will play Brazil or South Africa for the cup.

Disaster
DC Train Crash
Pablo Martinez Monsivais / AP Photo

Federal investigators may have found the culprit in Monday's Metro crash in Washington, D.C.: a faulty circuit. According to The Washington Post, the Metro relies on a system of circuits embedded along the tracks to keep trains properly spaced. When a train trips a circuit, it transmits a signal down the line that automatically sets speeds for the cars and stops a train from crashing into the one in front. Investigators tested six circuits near the crash site and found that one circuit did not work properly. Maintenance work was done on the circuit this month and last year and investigators will examine those records. Because the track at the site of the crash was curved, and the train was traveling at the top speed of 59 mph, the train operator may not have had time to stop despite evidence that she hit the emergency brakes.

The Obamas can't get enough of Beyonce. While the president talked healthcare with ABC, Michelle Obama took Sasha, Malia and friends from Chicago to see the singer last night at the Verizon Center, ABC News reports. It's not the first time they've enjoyed Beyonce, who also sang for the Obama's first dance on inauguration night, in person. And apparently, Michelle told the 'Bootylicious' singer that she is a role model for the girls. The admiration is mutual. Shortly after the inauguration, Beyonce told Vogue of her response to the First Lady's high praise "And I'm like, 'Oh my God,'" she said. "You feel fortunate to be one of the people whom parents don't mind their children looking up to."

Turmoil in Tehran

For the first time, Iranian opposition candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi spoke out about being isolated and pressured by authorities to withdraw his challenge to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's contested presidential win. USA Today reports that 70 university professors were arrested on Wednesday night after visiting Mousavi. While Ahmadinejad took to State TV to rant against Obama, Mousavi released a statement through his official Web site on Thursday saying authorities had "completely restricted" him and expressing frustration with "recent pressures" to drop his political stance. Mousavi's message does not appear to be falling on deaf ears: Tehranian newspapers are reporting that only 105 of 290 Iran's parliament members attended Ahmadinejad's victory party on Tuesday. Among the high-profile abstainers was Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, an Ahmadinejad appointee and close ally of the supreme leader's.

PLOT THICKENS
Mark Sanford
Mary Ann Chastain / AP Photo

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford said today that he paid for his most recent visit to Argentina (“It was my own ticket,” he told reporters), but one trip since his election in 2002 was financed by the South Carolina Department of Commerce. The trip most likely took place after he met his mistress, Politico reports, though it is unclear when exactly it occurred. But it’s unlikely that other aspects of his trip—or the affair—raise legal issues. According to John Simpkins, a professor at the Charleston School of Law, transfer-of-power requirements in the state of South Carolina don’t indicate Sanford violated any laws in fleeing the country without word of where he was going. “There's been a tradition that the governors will notify their lieutenant governors when they are out of state, typically," Simpkins said to NPR, "and when they are out of the country, certainly,” but his behavior was more “imprudent” than anything else.

The State has published more emails that he exchanged with his mistress. “I wasn’t aware till we met last week, the strong feelings I had for you, and believe me, I haven’t felt this since I was in my teen ages, when afterwards I got married,” she wrote him in July 2008. “I do love you, I can feel it in my heart, and although I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to meet again this has been the best that has happened to me in a long time.” Sanford wrote to Maria, “I wish I could wish it away, but this soul-mate feel I alluded too is real and in that regard I sure don’t want to be the person complicating your life. … I also suspect I feel a little vulnerable because this is ground I have never certainly never covered before — so if you have pearls of wisdom on how we figure all this out please let me know.”

Sex Scandal

Every time an American politician has a scandalous affair, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi pops up to remind us that things could be much more lecherous. The latest in Berlusconi's scandal du jour: 42-year-old escort Patrizia D'Addario, who claims the 72-year-old billionaire paid to sleepw ith her on the night of Obama's inauguration, gave an interview yesterday denying Berlusconi's claim that she is part of an organized "mission" to smear him. D'Addario says Berlusconi "cannot deny" the tale because she says she has it recorded on audio tape and told friends about the it immediately afterwards. She says Berlusconi summoned her back for a second rendezvous promising not money but "to help me and construct the resident on my family's land." Italian continue to debate whether prosecutors are maliciously pursuing Berlusconi, and whether he is unfairly using his power to quash their case.

Hes Back

The "when in doubt, blame America" strategy got Mahmoud Ahmadinejad this far, so why stop now? The Iranian president whose disputed re-election ignited the current unrest in Tehran went after President Obama in an interview with an Iranian news agency, demanding an apology for his recent condemnation of violence by the Iranian government. “I hope you will avoid interfering in Iran’s affairs and express regret in a way that the Iranian people are informed of it," Ahmadinejad said. He added: "Our question is why he fell into this trap and said things that previously Bush used to say." Ahmadinejad has mostly stayed out of the spotlight since the election. His words come as the opposition claims some 70 university professors have been arrested. While protests are becoming less common in the streets than last week, some 100 MPs reportedly refused to attend a victory party for Ahmadinejad, a symbolic act of defiance that shows that the divisions on the street are at play in the government as well.
