Palin's Polarizing Departure

A day has passed since the governor's press conference announcing her resignation and no one but Sarah Palin is exactly sure why she did it. But whatever the intended effect was of stepping down, the mysterious move is drawing harsh criticism even from fellow Republicans. “There is just no good way to say quitting has made her more qualified to run for higher office,” GOP pollster Glen Bolger told Politico. Republican consultant Todd Harris said that Palin "is on the verge of becoming the Miami Vice of American politics: Something a lot of people once thought was cool and then 20 years later look back, shake their heads and just kind of laugh.” While some prominent conservatives, like Bill Kristol, have defended her move, they've also admitted they didn't see it coming at all, highlighting the bizarre nature of Palin's hastily put together press conference.

Governor Palin made her reasons for stepping down very clear.

The multiple frivolous lawsuits and baseless charges made by those that have deliberately set out to hurt/destroy the Governor, and her family, have cost the taxpayers of Alaska millions of dollars.

The baseless and unfounded attacks against the Governor (all dismissed), and her family, have only increased since the presidential campaigns ended. That's millions of dollars MORE the taxpayers of Alaska would be WASTING to prove the Governor innocent of the never-ending baseless charges.

Palin has soundly beaten her foes at their "kill two birds with one stone" plan; "destroy Palin and her family" and "empty the coffers of Alaska". Stepping down from office leaves Alaska free to continue to prosper, grow, and remain the leader in American energy production. It won't be shelling out the millions Governor Palin's foes expected - because had she stayed in office, she would have been APPEASING her foes.

Now, Governor Palin has legal recourse of her own, as a private citizen, to hold those entities publishing slanderous and libelous stories about the Governor, and her family, financially responsible and accountable for their lies.

She is also free to be an amazing conservative leader in the nation, free from the restrictions the office of Governor legally imposed. Our nation is in deep and serious trouble. Sarah Palin is a strong, intelligent, and proven leader. Her fiscal revamping of Alaska has been wildly successful. She returned businesses to the private sector, stripping away unnecessary and overbearing government control, so those businesses could again thrive and provide employment - and they are.

I think Sarah has made the perfect move here. As long as the craziness of the liberal loons have a free reign to do and say whatever they want without repercussions, Sarah will be able to go after those who are dead set on continuing this. I hope Sarah makes millions by leaving these jerks in the dust. She is such a good person and we don't have enough of them standing up as it is. OMG look what we have in Washington right now. The Republicans should embrace her, not distance themselves from her like they have. They are pushing Newt and Mitt big time. Let them because I won't vote for them. They high tailed it and ran. I don't respect them because of their jealousy that Sarah may just make it when they couldn't. I'd rather not vote at all than to vote for any of them. Both parties have really done a lot of damage to this country. Obama is destroying what little good we had left. Look at the kind of lowlifes he attracts. They are vile people.

The GOP has a lot to learn about the base. The RINOS haven't shut there mouths any more than Letterman types. The Powells, Bushes, Mc Lames, Grahams. Lotts and others are yesterdays news. We don't want them around any more. They're out of the loop.
Sarah took the gloves off but kept the roll of quarters wrapped tightly in her fist..

As a woman did you appreciate it when she riled "her crowds" to yell "kill him, kill him"? You are an odd brand of feminist, if that is what you are trying to represent. Most women do not see it as us vs. men, so please do not hide behind that excuse.

--------------------------

Actually, the secret service conducted an investigation and determined that no one yelled "Kill him" at that rally. That hoax was started by David Singleton, a reporter for The Scranton Times-Tribune. Singleton's story appeared on the Scranton Times-Tribune website and then in their print edition the next day. Other news organizations (AP, MSNBC, ABC, etc.) picked it up and ran with the bogus story.

Ritarita,
After interviewing witnesses (Including secret service agents) and listening to tapes of the event the secret service believes that "Tell him" is what was shouted.

But if someone hates Sarah Palin it's better for that person to believe that "Kill him" was shouted.

Ritarita,
I think you need to calm down. I noticed the time stamp that you posted your message (7:23 pm) and if it's cocktail time where you are, you may want to consider putting your drink down... People tend to lose control when consuming alcohol.

I didn't mention Obama in any of my messages on this thread so I have no idea why you are yelling about him in a message to me.

It's very easy to find the "proof" if you're willing to search for it. I will give you one example. The timesleader.com published an article on 10/17/08 with the headline 'Secret Service says "Kill him" allegation unfounded' and quotes agent Bill Slavoski saying "We had people all over and we have yet to find anyone who said they heard it." The entire article can be found here:
http://www.timesleader.com/news/breakingnews/Secret_Service_says_Kill_hi m_allegation_unfounded_.html

If you want more examples, or "proof", do your own search.

So, I will repeat... I really don't care if you believe the secret service or not. I don't know you, I will never meet you, and what you choose to believe just isn't high on my list of priorities.

This is the relevant except from your link. It was not during a Sarah Palin speech and does not refute ritarita's claim:

"The first story, written by reporter David Singleton, appeared with allegations that while congressional candidate Chris Hackett was addressing the crowd and mentioned Obama's name a man in the audience shouted "kill him.""
-http://www.timesleader.com/news/breakingnews/Secret_Service_says_Kill_h im_allegation_unfounded_.html

this except is from an article written about a different rally DURING a Palin speech:
""Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience."
-http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2008/10/06/in_fla_palin_goes_for_th e_roug.html

please refrain from prejudicial accusations. There are passionate people on this site who are tired of unfounded allegations against a public servant whom we support and the apologetics that go on for those who make those allegations. Gov. Palin is a politician who did her absolute best foster a hateful environment as a means to secure victory in the 2008 race.

Please do your best to communicate your opinions and your interests to your representatives, including Mr. Obama, in a legitimate fashion.

Happy Independence Day

rapierwits,
Yes, reporter David Singleton reported in an article that "Kill him" was shouted while Chris Hackett was speaking at a Sarah Palin rally. Singleton's story quickly circulated and Palin was blamed and criticized. But after conducting an investigation the secret service has said the incident did not happen.

Thank you for posting the link to another article that also claims a man said "Kill him"..... This time while Palin was speaking. The author of that article, Dana Milbank, made the same claim that David Singleton did in his article (But the secret service agents and witnesses interviewed said didn't happen). Do you have a link to any site/article with information that the secret service investigated and acknowledged that "Kill him" was actually said at this other Palin rally? Thanks in advance.

You said: "please refrain from prejudicial accusations".
Would you please point out where I made "prejudicial accusations"?

You also said "Please do your best to communicate your opinions and your interests to your representatives, including Mr. Obama, in a legitimate fashion".
I believe Obama should be addressed as "President" Obama, not "Mr" Obama. Anyway, I never mentioned Obama in any of my messages except to ask Ritarita why she was yelling about him in a message to me.

The larger point is that Governor Palin used speech meant to incite misconceived anger.
1) I, frankly, do not need the Secret Service to be the final authority on the exact words of whomever yelled derogatory remarks at a campaign rival. Frankly, I believe they came to their finding to have the least impact possible against a candidate (Palin). They were, doubtless, investigating credible threats against Sen. Obama

2) The prejudicial accusation I referred to was your implication of substance abuse by a fellow poster

3) To clarify, please refrain from ad homonym speech and continue to communicate with us, your peers, and our elected representatives in a legitimate fashion.

Proud of this woman. Palin has guts. It never amazes me anymore the anger & angst direct at this person. She is obviously a threat to many many on both sides. My guess is Palin goes independent, maybe with Ron Paul, maybe Romney, maybe Gingrich. If you saw her press conference, you cannot help but admire this woman. I gather many critics did not watch the entire presser, just the soundbites AP et al want you to see. She's no business as-usual politician, that's for sure. She won't take over GM nor raise taxes either.

Palin is nothing more than a GOOD TIMES POLITICIAN.

She has neither the sofistication or the backbone to withstand the political stormy days. Sanford unraveled after his opposition to the stimulus money was rejected by his state legislature. Palin had the same problem with her local congress and although Republican-controlled she lost all fights over stimulus money.

If you add the Alaska economic crisis, her GasLine $23 billion boondoggle that is going nowhere fast, and on and on and you see a shallow, happy times, lightweight unable to master any type of crisis.

Would you want this feckless hockey mom running your nation?

@MaliciousDisorder

You're totally delusional!

Palin proved more than adept at being more venal, vicious, vindictive, corrupt, divisive and dishonest than the very worst politician of any party - soon after she became mayor of Wasilla! She continued that pattern as L/Gov.

Since becoming governor, she's been dogged by ethics investigations stemming from the construction of her home as a kickback for the Wasilla sports center contract. Wasilla is still paying for that bungled project including about $1.5 million in legal fees and counting.

I've no doubt that the hard working women (and men) who raise kids across this country are very capable at a great many things they turn their hand to - but running the US and leading the Western World requires incredible intelligence and political sophistication. Absolutely nothing in Sarah Palin's life including her 2 terms as mayor, term as L/Gov and now stunted Governorship has prepared her for that role. What possibly makes you think a Joe shmoe or hockey/soccer/suburban mum is any better qualified?

Really, I ask you - you're unbelievably jingoistic and simplistic - the election is OVER! The country elected a president that the far right inbred. wing-nut, paranoid, delusional, MINORITY have not nor will ever accept! McCain - a relatively centrist candidate (no matter his far right leaning electoral antics) lost by an enormous margin. What possibly suggests that a neo-conservative, evolution and global warming denying religious zealot, with a shaky grasp of national let alone international politics stands a better chance of taking the GOP 2008 vote the additional states required to swing a victory??!!

Yup, that's the Limbaugh spin. Never mind that he's been frolicking with the Spider Woman for a year.

Now the Thrilla from Wasilla tells us the big mean media are making fun of her baby child so she's calling it quits. Isn't that special...

If you ask my opinion I will say she sounded like the car was idling with the motor on and the suitcases packed and ready inside. As soon as the "point guard" tableaux was over she was outta here, lest the "feds" catch her first.

"Limosine Liberals"!!!
I LOVE IT!!!
It simultaneously derides liberals AND the wealthy, bolstering my conservative credentials while masking the ever-present capitalist greed inside me that begs for wealth and all its trappings. You see, 'limosines' are symbols of negativity to me, like lattes, and ivy league schools. It's not as if I'm harboring a deep-seeded envy for opportunities I feel were never afforded to me. This is not projection in it's most basic sense. I'm looking out for the common man, I exalt his low wages, uncertain future, the true grit of a working class that, through it's complicity and willful ignorance, has sold off its future one Chinese sweatshop worker at a time.

Can I be honest with you though, Mae. From true conservative to true conservative. I know I can trust you, since we have similar opinions on a series of unrelated political points, and I think that's all the information I need to make a judgement concerning the kind of human being you are. Okay, here goes: Sometime I awake, soaked in sweat, from a fever-pitch nightmare. In this terrifying dream I'm a small business owner. My workers a blue collar heroes, I treat them right and they deliver unto me reasonable margins of success. Still, I want to open more locations and increase my profits, but at a certain point it seems I can go no further without lowering wages to unreasonable levels, cutting benefits to the detriment of my employee's families, or shirking my responsibilities to provide a safe and healthy environment for both my laborers and my customers. Then, as I'm closing up shop one night, I'm struck from behind by an aluminum bat wielded by the ghost of Ronald Reagan. William F. Buckley is there, flipping a gold coin and talking to to man with greasy hair and hooves for feet, who seems to be greatly offended by the bile slowly dripping from Buck's fangs. Mr. Reagan is still beating me, whispering racial epithets all the while, as Ann Coulter, arching her back over the median in the road and criticizing the cars that swerve to avoiding hitting her as 'cut-and-runners', writhes in pleasure at his very existence. Between my sobs of pain and choking on my own blood, I ask, 'Why? What have I done? Haven't I been a good conservative? A good employer? A good American? Why, Ronald, why?" Then he stops, seemingly bewildered for a moment, before kneeling down and staring into my half closed eyes. I feel my life leaving me, the crimson pool beneath me swallowing the concrete sidewalk, spilling into the gutters and into the open, waiting maw of Ben Bernanke. And just before the world goes dark, I hear Reagan's voice, slowly, his lips tighten and slacken and the single word he hisses sounds almost foreign at first.

"Bootstraps"...

The dream is the same every night.

Not you though, right? This is the best news you've heard in 10 months. You must write for conservatives4palin, because this is ALL part of the Meisterwerk that is Sarah Palin's political career, each scandal merely a clever ruse to distract her weak-minded opponents from the sheer brilliance her status razor-sharp, earth-shattering political mind, each rambling, didactic, wholly unrelated response to even the simplest of questions simply an artful parry, a simultaneous denial of the 'left-wing gotcha media journalists, gosh darn jerks' and exaltation of the power and freedom afforded to the possessor of a blissfully, purposefully uneducated mind. It's so clear, MD, you wily devil, you saw right through that rambling concession (secession?) speech. Another brilliant feint by a truly brilliant woman. She's going places. She's got every ounce of the charisma and star power-nay, more, much more-that she had when she strode onto that stage and into your heart last fall. It seems like so long ago doesn't? Now, NOW, she has finally been loosed from the bonds of public office, because as we all know, the position of chief executive is by far the most difficult to occupy in terms of affecting an individual's agenda.

I suppose it's also a plus that, given these stunning (JUST YOU WAIT!) revelations, had this gone another way, you might've been forced to revise, alter, or sweet-lord-can-I-even-say-it-without-vomiting-uncontrollably-till-I-pass-ou t CHANGE your opinion of her. And let's face it, that's just another way of admitting to yourself that you were wrong. That you made a poor choice of judgement. And once that ace turns joker there's no accounting for the integrity of the rest of the house, no matter where the windows came from.

EE, the biggest drag on the nations food supply came at the hands of the Democratic controlled congress, it called the Ethanol bill, subsidising farmers to grow corn and grain for ethanol, which impacted the entire food chain in this country.

Palin's speech was written, I would guess, by her and Todd. She did not even tell her brother before the press conference. The speech was not extemporaneous. She read it into a teleprompter. Greta's show posted enough video that it included pan back shots showing the teleprompter she read into. And her entire speech is posted on her official website. Paul Begala's take at HuffPo on her posted text is priceless, with all of its various ALL CAPS and exclamation points and odd punctuation. The rambling syntax was planned!

EXCERPT: "Another accomplishment - our Law Department protected states' rights - two huge U.S. Supreme Court reversals came down against that liberal Ninth Circuit, deciding in our state's favor over the last two weeks. We're protectors of our Constitution - federalists protect states' rights as mandated in 10th amendment."

"Law Department"? That would be the Supreme Court.....

Re another accomplishment: One of them must have been the suit before the Supreme Court brought by the Sate of Alaska against one of its citizens who was trying to gain access for the accused to DNA to provide evidence of innocence. Guess that cost the state big bucks for that reversal against individual rights. And don't tell me the other was Ricci. What a gal.

It makes me furious to see how unfair the media are. Chelsea Clinton flew to China and many other places with Bill and Hillary, but did you hear one word about the cost?? I did not, and I bet that the Clinton's did not pay for that cost. They sure made a big deal of Palin's children flying with her, and she paid the money back. Surely all of you can see that Palin has not been treated fairly.

If any of you honestly believe this woman who went to 6 different colleges wit h a total SAT score of 800, you are nuts. I read the leftie Anchorage Daily News consistently. Democrats have become vicious and rotten ala Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals. They consider Palin a serious threat and have "targeted" her for destruction. By handing the governance of her precious Alaska over to Parnell, she is making a try at keeping Alaska out of dem hands. She'll survive to fight another day, and so will Alaska.

Looks that way.
Don't forget she's
Doing all of this 'For Alaska'.
It's getting very sad very quickly.
She's so delusional that she hardly knows
What she's saying.
And all of those old white folks
Who actually thought she was winking at them
Are going to be so bitterly disappointed.

She was earmarked for destruction-
But it never occurred to me that she would
Fold up so quickly or so easily.

Rita -- I'm waiting for the real story to surface. This ain't the end of it.

It looks like she went rogue on herself. Mavericky, yes; politically deft, hell no. This is one of the political schlockiest moves of all time.

She did quit as Energy Commissioner after 11 months and then went on to win the governorship, though. So, maybe this is a hailmary pass of the same sort. Never been seen, never been done. We shall see her mavericky moves from now on, no doubt.

Sounds like Palin is the only honest politican we have in government. As she said, since she did intend to retire why not just go now, instead of staying on and be a lame duck. Most lame ducks just hang around and spend money. I do believe that Sara sees all of the corruption, lies, deceit and bad policy that is being forced upon us, and she feels that it is her duty and responsibility to do her part. We need more like her, but WHERE do you find them. People that have integrity are disliked immensely by the press, and they will do everything in their power to see that they are "kept in their place". People hates palin because she lived by her values and beliefs. She fights corruption, even in her own party---now tell me, where do you see that in WAshington?

What are you going to say when it is out in the open that Gov. Sarah Palin received favors from a company that she gave even bigger favors to while in office. Can you really say with a straight face that she did not exemplify what just yesterday she had the gall to vilify? Are you so naive that you cannot face facts?

She is a quitter plain and simple, GrannyRob and maryfrost2. You can spin it any way you like if it makes you feel better. But the fact is that every great leader of guts and integrity has not run away when attacked. Did Lincoln resign when he and his wife Mary were attacked by the press during the Civil War? Can you imagine the pressure on him? Did Susan B. Anthony run away when she was reviled and was pelted with rotten tomatoes as she fought for the vote for over fifty years? No! Palin is a coward who couldn't stand the heat in the political kitchen; she is only looking out for her own interests now. The state of Alaska is better off without her in office. I can only hope the rest of us won't have to deal with her for much longer.

Will the Neo-Cons use Sarah after july 26 to be the Attack dog like she was on the campaign trail. To go around the country and attack President Obama's agenda. Will she do town hall meetings like the President but to attack his agenda. You know the Pal around with terrorist crap she tryed to use but failed. One part in the statement caught my attention was that she said she would help any candidate it did'nt matter what party it was is she throwing the republicans under the bus for how they treated her. Will the Dems test that part of the statement. Will Hillary make that call and find out "WHY she said that is there a third party being constructed will the Evangelic's stay in the republican party maybe it is time for a Third party to emerge .The Evangelic Third party totally seperate from the republicans and the democrats ."WE SHALL SEE" or was it just to much for the point guard to handle with a possible investigation hanging over the head of the Governer. The Palin Saga continue's....!

I LOVE SARAH PALIN-I FEEL THAT SARAH RIGHT NOW KNOWS THAT SHE NEEDS TO CONCENTRATE ON HER FAMILY. SHE HAS A BABY WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, AND HER DAUGHTER NEEDS HELP WITH HER LITTLE ONE WITHOUT A FATHER THERE FOR HER BABY. SARAH ALSO HAS YOUNG CHILDREN. THERE IS SO MUCH ATTENTION THAT SHE NEEDS TO PUT INTO THIS DIRECTION, THAT CONTINUING BEING GOV. OF ALASKA WOULD MOST DEFINITELY TAKE AWAY WHERE HER GUIDANCE IS NEEDED MOST (AT HOME FOR THE MOMENT). I ALSO FEEL THAT INBETWEEN ALL THIS, THAT SARAH WILL BE NETWORKING, GIVING SPEECHES AND GETTING READY TO RUN IN 2012 FOR THE WHITEHOUSE. NETHERLESS TO SAY, "I WILL VOTE FOR PALIN"

Charles-
Bush was just the sock puppet.
He barely managed to 'win' even with
The manuvering of Karl Rove who cynically
Proved that you could Swift Boat your way
To the Presidency.
Save your queasy feelings for him.
Bush never won anything on his own.
Even worse a lot of the people who muscled him
Into the top job now deny it
And claim Palin
Is the one.

I don't understand how anyone can defend any politcian who ups and quits in the middle of their term, because things are to tough. Since when is quitting a thing to look up too? If she didn't want all the heat that the press brought, she could have told McCain no when it came to the VP position. Hillary has taken more crap for more years and yet, didn't come out and whine and cry and then quit. I see nothing to look up to with this women from the north.

I don't think there is much of anything the woman could do that wouldn't further endear her to the minority of conservative morons in the U.S. but I cannot for the life of me imagine how this will not hurt her among the majority of independents here.

Nonetheless, those who think Sarah 'Plain & Tall' is going away are dead wrong. She'll be more vocal & spewing more ignorance than ever. There is no doubt in my mind that she will be running for president or at the absolute least vice-president in 2012. And the prospect of this nutjob running the country is truly terrifying. I'm not religious but, to me, that would be breaking the 7th seal...

Anyway both parties are full of lousy politicians. And as much as I am for Obama, alot of things are starting to be lies. And like Bush,no one can do a thing about it.Our Pres is charismatic, suave, and sharp.!!!
