Ahmadinejad: Say Sorry

Former President Bush’s enemies have so far seemed eager to make nice with President Obama (see Russia’s scrapping of missile plans today), but it looks like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is going to spoil the fun. The Iranian President addressed crowds in Khermenshah today, saying, "Those who speak of change must apologize to the Iranian people and try to repair their past crimes," alluding to Obama's recent interview on Al Arabiya, in which the president said “[if] countries like Iran are willing to unclench their fist, they will find an extended hand from us." Ahmadinejad also said the U.S. should "stop interfering in other people's affairs," referring to U.S. military presence around the world.

We stopped a free election in Iran in 1953 and installed the Shah who killed and imprisoned thousands. We stopped a democracy in Iran. If we hadn't the area may be what we want today.

We should stop interferring in foreign countries but so should they. I'd like to see a negotiation that accomplishes both and opens trade. Iranians love us, the people do. They are young and pro-western. It could be a way to change their country in positive ways.

He also wanted an invite to the inauguration. He didn't get it. Obama isn't one to grovel, you'll see.

Of course he isn'y going to grovel. Dave just likes smearing.

We can talk to our adversaries. People like Dave say it's appeasement but they said the same thing to Reagan when he talked to Gorby. The result is the Berlin Wall came down.

They probably don't want peace. Bombs make some people a lot of money.

Most sane people know just talking doesn't mean you are giving in.

We need to reach all the young people in Iran who love the west. Talking is a start.

Ahmadinejad doesn't control the military anyway. The Mullahs do. He can't bomb anyone. I think we're all tired of republican scare tactics.

I agree with Apostlies, Talking is better than bombs. We need to root out those who hate us and teach hate to their children. We need to change the world by talking, not by killing innocent children. You are right about people never forgetting when their families are killed. It breeds incredible anger and sets a fire under fanatics who push their agendas on the young and vulnerable.

Ahmadinejad is a foolish leader. To make statements like the jewish holocost never happened is incredibly stupid.

Four hundred and forty four days of internment for our diplomats at the outset of the very regime that this nut is now the face for. That was an act of war and yet where is the apology from him? Even George Ball told Carter to get a hair on his butt back then and Obama should too today.

This regime is backing worldwide expansion of Islamic fundamentalism by force of terrorist arms. While I think we should see if they are open to reason, we have to notice that they are not being reasonable right now.

If they are not open to being reasonable, then we should push them where they are soft and see if that prevents them from victimizing other in the region.

Yes, I also think Ahmedinijad is a tool, (like when he did that stupid alternative address the queen's in england...like they would ever let a western leader do that in their own country!) but I don't see any problem in giving an apology to the Iranian people for the US's past mistakes.
We just need to set a good example through courtesy and restraint.

I think many people here in the U.S. and around the world have already made the big mistake of underestimating President Obama. Obama is a tough. But he lines it with diplomacy. I don't believe this man will be dictated to by attention seekers like Ahmedinijad.

Next to Israel Iran is the most educated nation in the Middle East. It also has a very young base who are educated. Bottom line those people, the people in the educated street want to be part of the world & really want to be part of America. Ahmedinijad was elected just like Bush was elected meaning if "every" American voted Bush would have won NOTHING!!!!! Same problem in Iran, not everyone votes & young people are at the head of the non voting list just as they were here until Obama. The time will come quickly that someone will step up & the religious killers & haters in Iran wil go the way of all dictatorships. The best thing we could do as a country is simple, open our doors to every Iranian high school graduate who wants to come here for an education then when Iran says NO you can't go, watch what happens. Ahmedinijad & his holy priests are on their way out, they just need a big nudge from the young people who want to be like the Iranians that came here to the US, rich & happy & free & don't think for one moment they young people of Iran don't know how their counterparts in the U.S. live, they do & they want the same lives.....

What possible good will it do to talk to this tin-pot. We know where he stands on Nukes and Israel. Bigger problem in Iran is Rev Guard .. I suppose obama would just like to talk to these lunatics also ..

For years the conventional wisdom is that you don't create the impression that third-world dictatorships have equal status as freedom loving countries. Obama, being the "wise" man he thinks he is, addresses Iran and other muslim countries on Arab tv as "equals" and what happens? You guessed it, Iranian crazy-guy walks through the open door to embarass the U.S. and improve his own image at the same time. "Come kiss my ass now, Mr. Obama" is what he should have said. "Now that you admit the United States blows, come on over and blow me while you're at it." Nice move, Obama.

We kiss the asses of plenty of third-world dictatorships, Saudi Arabia for instance, but joining that expansive list isn't the point of Mahmoud's speech. Ahmadinejad doesn't want peace, he wants a continuing confrontational relationship with the U.S., he wants a boogeyman to distract his people. Hatred of the west is life support for failing states.

I'm not a mind reader, I don't know what Obama's going to do, but I think his best bet would be to just ignore that blowhard.
