Ahmadinejad's Reelection Rival

Good news for Barack Obama: It’s looking like Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad faces a tough reelection campaign. Presidential rivals are already emerging, with Tehran mayor Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf a top contender. Ghalibaf has fashioned himself the “candidate of gradual change” and favors closer ties with the West. A weak economy is providing an opening to attack Ahmadinejad, and Ghalibaf is considered a potential consensus candidate that conservatives and reformers can both support.

Ayatollah Khamenai possesses all and absolute power over every aspect of Iran and whoever is President is simply a megaphone for him. Khamenai will not even acknowledge Hillary's existence. Khamenai will attempt to murder Mr. Obama, a Muslim apostate, should he come into his presence. There is no alternative to our fomenting a counter- revolution to remove the Iranian cleric class from power.

Very well, tavallai, do the people "bring" the revolution before or after Khamenai acquires nuclear weapons. Do we assume you speak for the people? If so, what's your plan? STFU, yo mama!

The religious clerics in Iran are a dying breed. more than 50% of the Iranian population is under the age of 25 and a lot of them are relatively liberal-minded and pro-west. I think right now, we need to be as peaceful and courteous with Iran as possible, there is so much international pressure on them about their nuclear program...I don't believe they will actually follow through with threatening or bombing anyone. They know if they attacked Israel with a weapon like that they'd be wiped off the map. It isn't the US's duty to "take charge" though. My belief is that in 40 years, Iran will be unrecognizable from what it is today, there will be a change for the better, but they will achieve this themselves, not with "help" from us.

The madrassas and the entrenched Revolutionary Guard and religious police will continue producing the same breed of Islamic fanatic that we have fought and are fighting in Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan. Remember Tien-An-Men Square? Almost all of the dead were under 25. The clerics are no more of a dying breed than are the Chinese Communist Party, Catholics, Jews or Evangelicals. Don't hold your breath.
