Poll

‘Whatever’ Is Most Annoying Word

"Whatever" is officially the most annoying saying, according to a nationwide poll by Marist. Nearly half of Americans (47 percent) object to the saying, and even more Midwesterners (55 percent) dislike it. Only 19 percent of them feel the same way about "you know," which is the phrase that gets under 32 percent of Northeasterners' skin.

I thought
Annoyance was
The whole reason for using it.

Whatever is totally annoying....totally!

AuntBarb

It's a way of being rudely dismissive.

The scariest thing is it being part of common usage, increasingly by adults.

I nominate 'but guess what" as second most annoying. And adults are already using that one ad nauseum.

My husband used to say it all the time to me when he was loosing the argument,"Whatever".

I wanted to smack him when he said it. I find it an annoying word. Like the person saying it just doesn't care and wants you to know about it, and by doing so is saying that whatever you are saying is not important.

So I find it a disrespectful word to say to someone, Whatever!

Whenever my wife is loosing an argument she ends it by saying "nevertheless" and walking off.

The one that is even more annoying:" It is what it is". Of course it is what it is, what the f--k else would it be?

If you think so then you have to watch this piece by Taylor Mali on that phrase:

also http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Azu8XWcHzFM good but not quite as amazing.

What makes it so annoying is that it will be used in any argument any time by those who actually feel it is a rebuttal of sorts.

"It takes a year for the Earth to revolve around the Sun, not a month."

Response: "Whatever..."

In other words - I don't know, I don't care and I'm too lazy to make an actual argument.

I agree with our example those two annoying words, and why use. I also can't stand, "but it OK." ...........Best

What I find even more annoying is the expression "he's like/she's like" substituted for the word "said".

I was getting a manicure a few months ago and two 20-somethings were waiting for their nails to dry. I counted 75 "like" insertions during their conversation (ie: "Like, I like went to meet him and, like, he, like started talking on his cell phone and I was, like, hey!). Sadly, this is not an exaggeration.

By far, "like" has to be my most annoying word.

We've discussed our lack of civility and this is just another sign of it. Even our language is devolving. People have forgotten how to spell and are so busy we use acronyms for everything. One of the biggest problems I see is a total disregard for the correct usage of "your" and "you're". Did they quit teaching english and grammar in school or is this a result of "no child left behind"?

Two words/expressions I hate: colleague and you know.
"You now" I blame my hate for this expression on a "colleague". He pointed out a mutual "colleague" of ours and how much that "colleague" used, you know, "you know". Now every time I talk with the other "colleague", you know, the number of times he says "you know" drives me bazonkers. You know ?
I can't get work done when I talk to the second "colleague" because of "you know" and reminders of my built-up hatred for the first colleague for pointing "you know" out to me in the first place.

Our politicians always say "With all due respects..." before they pummel their opponents. That's what annoys me.

The best word for politicians in the past few years has been "robust". Now, of course it's, the phrase "...worse we've seen since the Great Depression".

I love using "with all due respect" before pummeling a moron. It can be effectively disarming.
