Bruno Seduces the Box Office

Bruno
Universal Pictures

In Sacha Baron Cohen’s Bruno, the gay, Austrian titular character dreams of becoming “uber-famous”—and it seems those dreams are coming true. The film topped the box office this weekend, grossing $30.4 million after its midnight debut. (For context, Cohen’s first film, Borat, made $9.2 million on its first day—though Bruno debuted on more than three times as many screens as the one starring the infamous green thong-wearing provocateur.) Coming in second was the third Ice Age movie, raking in $28.5 million. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen dropped 58 percent in its third week with $7.6 million—what, is everyone already over Megan Fox?

Problem - in the rush to attack Megan Fox whoever wrote this piece revealed their inability to reason.

Instead of thinking - "Really, a movie that has taken in $600 million worldwide in 3 weeks only took in $7 million this week. I doubt that." Then maybe they would have not failed so badly. Unfortunately, without editors to check the lack of knowledge of the writer, this kind of crap diminishes from The Daily Beast and makes their "reporting" suspect. As they say, if you read it on the web - it has some chance of being right.

Actually, the $7 million number was for Friday and Transformers raked in a little over $24 million in it's third weekend.

If only you hadn't rushed to write that last sentence so you could take a gratuitous swipe at a 23 year old woman who while undoubtedbly being better looking and less petty than you might also be smarter than you.

ahh... weedySeadragon (is that your William F. Buckley imitation)

I actually don't follow the spats between Michael Bay and Megan Fox. My comment was directed at the story but since you ask, I'll suggest that if she is not in the next Transformer movie it will have been her choice. It's about money and I suspect Michael Bay is happy to get all the free publicity he can get.

I always wondered what sneezing looked like on line. My apologies for thinking it was a pretentious affectation like that old snot rag who also founded National Review and is credited (blamed?) for the conservative movement in the U.S. Not quite old enough to need a walker - just part of the "intellectual elite" trying to destroy this country by learning about the past.

I'm not particularly optimistic or pessimistic about Megan Fox's intellectual acumen. It might have been hard for you to understand my original point so let me try again. My comment was directed at the person who decided to not fact check their story and instead took the opportunity to attack someone for a reason only known by them.

I'm not her agent but by your apparent dislike for her I must assume you know her personally and she has done something to offend you. Or maybe you are the original story writer and just don't take criticism well.

My nineteen year-old said the movie is ridiculously funny but that his dad and I should not see it. I will adhere to his advice.

We all went and saw Johnny Depps' 'Public Enemy' last night. It was a good one to spring for the cost of theatre tickets.

First as to Buckley v Goldwater. I don't accept that one has to exclude the other. But I will do the lazy thing and simply cut and past from Buckley's Wickipedia entry.

"Buckley was "arguably the most important public intellectual in the United States in the past half century", according to George H. Nash, a historian of the modern American conservative movement. "For an entire generation he was the preeminent voice of American conservatism and its first great ecumenical figure."[6] Buckley's primary intellectual achievement was to fuse traditional American political conservatism with laissez-faire economic theory and anti-communism, laying the groundwork for the modern American conservatism of U.S. presidential candidates Barry Goldwater and President Ronald Reagan."

Now we both know that Wiki isn't the end of any argument but I wasn't trying to have an argument about two dead guys. I can assure you that argument can be had by going to the above mentioned page and changing the entry.

As to Fox. My original comment wasn't directed at her but the ignorance of the Daily Beast poster. You took exception by positing that dissing Bay made her dumber than the Daily Beast writer. I disagree.

The statement that the movie made $7 million dollars reflects a lack of cognitive reasoning and is FACTUALLY wrong. The swipe at Fox reflects something else. Dissing a major Hollywood player in your OPINION shows a lack of good judgement. That remains to be seen and likely won't be known for a number of years.

Personally, I hold people who write the articles for The Daily Beast to a higher standard than actresses but that's just me. Others are entitled to a different opinion.

Didn't notice your second post.

Actually, moderate left driven there by the lack of a moderate right. I actually have "The Family" on my list of books to read after seeing the author on Maddow's show.

Personally, I think Goldwater while always being a bit of a libertarian moderated on a lot of issues that simply weren't on the front burner in the sixties later in life because of his family. Both wife and children and grandchildren. I don't believe for instance that Goldwater would have been in favor of abortion, gay rights, etc. in 1964.

I can assure you that I wouldn't demean Goldwater (I was at his funeral.) but read the history of the Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) founded by Buckley to see how important they were to Goldwater's rise.
