THAT WAS EASY

Bush Shocks Small Town

When Woodward, Okla. invited George W. Bush to their Independence Day celebrations, they thought they'd never hear back. But they did—with an RSVP yes! The former president will attend Woodward's Let Freedom Ring 2009 festival on July 4th. And now the community of 12,000—where cows outnumber people—is rushing to get ready for what locals are calling the biggest event ever to happen to their tiny town. And almost everyone's turning out to greet him: so far 9,200 tickets have been sold—the largest crowd Bush has greeted since he's left office. Said the shocked event promoter who sent the invitation to the former president: "I thought, `President Bush, July 4, no way is he even available. I almost asked for an off day in October or November, because I felt it would even be a stupid question to ask for the Fourth."

Sounds like a politician who is actually responding to the local folks for a change. Love him or hate him, who else has done that?

I have to agree. I am far from a Bush supporter, and this little story allows every opportunity to say things like "that's the only place that wants to have him," "He's so irrelevant his only 4th of July invite was to a podunk town in Oklahoma," etc.; however, I am going to assume that this was a genuine desire to celebrate the 4th with normal people in a typical town, in opposition to the staged and over-the-top fetes he was required to attend and lord over as president.

We need less ignorant vitriol on these comment threads and more honest debate and discussion. Lib/Prog/Dems and Repub/Con/Neo-Cons alike need to end the ad hominem attacks on other posters and learn/re-learn to act civilly. I tend to read the comments on articles to see the reactions and get the pulse of the people who bother to read and comment on such things and the unfortunate thing is I could copy/paste a random thread from this site and use it over and over on other articles here because they all end up the same. Ignore trolls, if you read a comment that gets your ire up- count to four and let it go. Keep the convo on topic of the article and prevent diverging from the topic at hand. Don't bait and don't get baited. Don't insult- it just leads to at least twenty unnecessary and irrelevant posts either defending or attacking you. The world blows right now. If you fancy yourself a learned individual with solutions to the problems we all face, lead, engage in, and contribute to productive debate, don't throw stones and add to the polarizing deadlock that grips the politics of this country.

Joe I'm sure
You're a really nice guy
And you meant well-
But you're eight years late
And a few trillion dollars short.

You are right, we all got the message but ritarita, of course, LOL I think he is going to do small things because he does not have secret service, I think Clinton was the last one to have that for a lifetime after the presidency. He'll need it in Haiti.

I'm going to assume the town was divided on the invitation, and the cows had a veto-proof majority.

I wonder if a past President Obama would ever attend a celebration in a small town like this? You know, the people in middle America who stick to their guns and religion.......
Good for George Bush.........

Well, Bush certainly is giving the people of Woodward, OK, something that they will be talking about for years to come. Hat's off to him on this one.
