Calls Increase for Sanford's Resignation
He may not have gone to the Appalachian Trail, but is South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford about to take a hike anyway? 14 of the 27 Republican state senators in South Carolina have called for Sanford's resignation, including the majority leader and the senate president. United States Senator Jim Demint also said that "A lot of us are talking to [Sanford] behind the scenes." Sanford admitted on Tuesday to having more trysts with his mistress, Maria Belen Chapur, than he had previously acknowledged.

Ditch this narcissistic loser...he's an adolescent attention whore. The citizens of South Carolina should kick him to the curb like he did to his family and the state and tell him to STFU. Americans are tired of sobbing, self-serving politicians who go on TV and claim to want absolution from their sins because they believe in God and are sorry they strayed from the path of the righteousness when they're really just sorry they got caught and want to avoid losing everything. We don't need any more hypocrites....politics is already overflowing with them.

I suppose the SC senate has ditched business to ponder the importance of this one particular issue. I want to know why our states are in massive debt, unable to cut programs to make the budgets balanced and unwilling to bring these problems to the fore but are willing to make mass media about this one person?
Where is all this uncertainty coming from all of a sudden? A week or so back he was in line for the presidency.

This guy just keeps digging the hole deeper and deeper. All these press conferences to discuss the minutia of his affair and his personal life and feelings are, well, just undignified and embarrassing. I cannot figure out what he hopes to gain. Forgiveness? He needs to shutup, go home, and go away for his and his familys own good and the state of South Carolina.
Why are Repubs implored to resign and Dems encouraged to resist the "pressures of right wing extremism"? Is hypocrisy leashed only to those who profess a faith and not those who hide or have no faith? Just a couple of questions.
Still, Squiggs is correct. America spends more time concerned about the failures of one man than the failures of an entire system.
And this mess pales to the American concern for Michael Jackson - now there is an important issue! NOT!!!
Exactly!
That's an odd way to look at it
Pcncarolina-
You're obviously not familiar
With the details of the Eliot Spitzer scandal
Where he was not only 'implored' to resign
He did resign.
No, I am aware. However, one case does not make a viable theory, only a point of inquiry. Good point.
You're obviously not familiar
With the details of the Eliot Spitzer scandal
Where he was not only 'implored' to resign
He did resign
Because he was caught up in a
federal criminal investigation
of
criminal prostitution.
Thanks Plantagonet, Rita likes to "forget" the illigal portions of what a Dem does. I am suprised she didnt bring up Clinton and the blue dress. Forget lying under oath....
The charges under consideration
In the Spitzer case stemmed from
The accusation that he used Taxpayer dollars
To fly to and from his illicit rendezvous-
According to both the NY Daily News
And the NY Times.
Governor Sanford has used Taxpayer dollars
To fly back and forth to Argentina.
No charges were ever filed against
Governor Spitzer.
No charges will be filed against
Governor Sanford.
They both broke the law.
Only Spitzer resigned.
Rita -- Spitzer commited a federal offense for paying travel and prostitution services across state lines. The babe was contracted in NY was paid for her train ticket and for services rendered in DC. Once Spitz resigned the federal case was dropped. No taxpayer money was used.
Yay, Ritarita
Again.

On Nov. 6, Manhattan U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia announced that he wouldn't pursue criminal charges against Spitzer. He said that was because Spitzer didn't use public money to pay for his pre-Valentine's
Day liaison at Washington's Mayflower Hotel with hooker Ashley Dupre.
You guys are all missing the point. All of the Democrats who have recently been caught with their willies in the wrong place--John Edwards, Eliott Spitzer, and Governor McGreevy did NOT exploit the extramarital sex situations of other people. And, Edwards wasn't in office and the other two resigned.
On the other hand, you have Vitter, Sanford, Larry Craig, Ensign, and the Florida pederast (forget his name) who were all in office, and they all did NOT resign (except for the Florida NAMBLA member). And they ALL gave us all a bunch of pious bullshit about "the sanctity of marriage" and its "sacred bond." Gag.
And that's big difference today between the Democratic and Republican parties.
His name was Foley
Roger.
And I didn't miss the point.
I was merely trying to get across
The idea that Sanford should know
That it's time to go without comparing himself
To 'King David' the invincible.
It kind of goes hand in hand
With your point.
Agreed. BTW, I wasn't referring to you re "missing the point," and I wasn't clear.
Spitzer also went away for over a year and stayed out of sight with his family and did what he needed to do and we need people like Spitzer back on task because they are excellent at their jobs - for Spitzer, being a prosecutor is his calling and he is very good at it. He is not running for office, yet anyway, and if the citizens of NY want him back in state politics, that is their choice, but he did resign and stay out of sight for a long time (long, in political time) and atoned.
pcncarlina: obviously you are a product of our broken education system. Why else would you define all democrats as those who "hide thier faith, or have no faith" In case you didnt notice, you illustrate the hypocrisy of what has become the Base of the GOP. You are a christian and you are gods chosen people. Anyone and everyone who does not agree with you is not a christian, not american, and is going to hell and hates america. When in truth, you and your ilk are idiot, pea brained, uneducated, and have little if any "class." Trust me, I lived in NC. Your state sent Jesse Helms back to the senate for years. Your neighbors to the south sent Strom thumond back for yrs. You even elected Libby Dole for some stupid reason.
Uh, actually I have 2 Masters (one from a European university) and a PhD, but who is counting.
You know fleet, it is quite apparent that you should spend some quality time with an English tutor (then an etiquette tutor) . There was no defining Dems to those who have no faith in this post. I'll clarify. Hypocrisy seems to ONLY be tied to those who profess a faith (meaning my young pedawan, any faith) and not to those who neither express a faith or choose to hide it (meaning; if a person's faith is unknown then they are not hypocritical to whatever professional post they hold. Meaning, the term hypocrisy is always used with people of faith and not position/rank. Perhaps I should "dumb down" my posts for you?
Admittedly, I have said such things as "no Christian could be a Democrat" before here trying to make a larger point and instigate a dialogue. Even my students understand hyperbole to make a point or incite a pointed and well thought response. You sir, are obviously an ignorant, or as my granny used to say, "damned dumb Yankee". Praise God your stay in NC was "fleeting".
Obviously, Christians can be Dems because my mother-in-law is along time Dem. ;-)
Oh, for the record... I previously said that Sanford should resign.
Gee, carolina, I was impressed with your verbiage and also your degrees, but then I got to your next to last paragraph. I live in one of the Slave States, too, and it's been about 30 years that someone in my hearing (or blog-range) called anybody a Yankee.
I mean, you have to agree that sending Jesse back to the Senate year after year says a lot about that state. It's the reason I turned down more than one job there.
....and BTW, your second paragraph, besides being barely readable, is simply wrong. The term "hypocrisy" is indeed used with people in the context of position or rank. It's
one of the best descriptors of the Republican Party: white, Southern, male, middle-aged, bigoted and hypocritical.
pcncarolina: Admittedly, I have said such things as "no Christian could be a Democrat" before here trying to make a larger point and instigate a dialogue. Even my students understand hyperbole to make a point or incite a pointed and well thought response.
---------------------------
Yes. We understand perfectly pcncarolina, you like to lie and make up crap to get people pissed off but you truly don't believe in anything you say. Fine, from now on anything you say we will assume is simply "hyperbole"! Alternatively: maybe when you get your butt handed to you, your come back is to say "obviously it was a
joke/hyperbole/my cat did it..blah,blah,blah".
P.S. If you have 2 Masters AND a PhD, either my grandfather just won the lottery, or this is more of your "hyperbole".
P.S.S. my grandfather died over 10 years ago!
pcncarolina:
1. Posting a piece of extreme arrogance, a lie actually, and then trying to pass it off as hyperbole doesn't wash. Further, hyperbole is not a debate tactic. It does not serve either truth or reason. It is used to change the subject or obfuscate.
2. I have not seen anyone here attempting to tie hypocrisy only to people of faith. That would be irrational. The hypocrisy attends those who publicly pass judgment on others, while having feet of clay themselves. Yeshua/Jesus chastised the Pharaisees for parading their faith about on the streets. Christian politicians may be the new Pharisees.
3. Your offer to "dumb down" your posts for others is a glaring example of the kind of arrogance that does not reflect the glory and love of the Lord. I refer you once again to 1 Corinthians 1:13 and the clanging cymbal. The arrogance in your posts is a putrid witness.
4. It's usually a mistake to pick apart another person's grammar, spelling, or use of English, if you don't take the time to carefully proof your own posts, which are not free from error.
pcn,
If by pedawan, you meant Padawan, it looks like you put yourself in the role of master. I doubt fleet feels he or she is your apprentice. If you did not mean Padawan, just what did you mean?
Roger, yea, I do definitely agree with you on Ol' Jesse.
Connie, how quick you are to criticize me for trying to respond to a blatant insult towards me and my statesmen and yet offer no chastisement to the one who insults me. Still, I will press onward towards my goal.
Hyperbole: Paul (according to some scholars like Lauri Thren) uses hyperbole in I Cor 12:31 "Kai eti kath' huperbolën hodon humin deiknumi." to create his pathos (A style that has the power to evoke feelings) for the upcoming verses. In the original Greek, although transposed into English here where it loses some of its punch still conveys Paul's exaggeration beyond previous lines. Again, Carol, I do not wish to convey arrogance and people who know me would say that it was a preposterous proposition. Perhaps it is the necessity for pithiness that creates loss in the nuances of my verbiage but I assure you, and other readers, that I simply wish to stoke deeper thought on issues. My literary technique is to use hyperbole similar to Paul. However, the context and emotions of the topic along with the lack of the written English languages' ability to convey nuances does make it difficult for a novice non-academic writer. Perhaps if emoticons were present some of the many misinterpretations that occur here could be avoided and we all could stay on topic.
crymeariver: Proverbs 15:2 "The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly." Nuf said.
pcn,
IMO, you have set yourself up as superior both morally and intellectually. You certainly set yourself up as a spokesman for Christianity, which you are not. That specifically is why I take issue with you more than others, who do not similarly present themselves.
You cut and paste, without attribution I might add, which is (a) immoral and (b) illegal, but never mind, everybody does it. If you imagine that I'm going to engage in Biblical exegsis at this forum, you are mistaken. It is enough to say that no one has to accept your cut-paste job as definitive.
For those who are interested, but don't feel like looking it up, 1 Corinthians 12:31 reads, "But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way." Make of that what you will, in light of pcn's post.
Correction:
I should have said "the spokesman," not "a spokesman." Obviously, if pcn believes himself to be a Christian, he has the right to represent himself as a spokesman, as does everyone.
I'd like to know why Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson aren't weighing on the immorality of all this.
I can't speak for Pat Robinson, but Jerry Falwell is dead. Answer your question?
He could still offer an opinion...I'm just saying...
Typical example of trying to turn reality upside down to divert attention. You got it backwards of course. Reps are always screaming for investigations and resignations the instant there is a Dem scandal but always try to say it should not affect the job of their own politicians. It's a one-sides separation of personal and private lives that goes something like this: We the Republicans are the party of values that can tell everyone else how to live their private lives; we are the party that will use any private life failing in our opponents for political gain; but if any spotlight is directed at us, that's private and should have no impact on our public lives...
Spitzer resigned within days of his story breaking. I didn't see any major pus for him to "resist right-wing pressure" -- even most of his own party encouraged him to go quickly.
It is not just a matter of those who profess faith - it is about THOSE who CONDEMN others and tell people that the only path to righteousness is through their lookinglass. People like Sanford (politicians or not) on the right have a pattern of condemnation of anyone who has beliefs that differ from their own and constantly use their religion as their excuse for anything they say, do or claim to believe. These evangelical, born-agains or whatever the fundies call themselves want absolution with no atonement and no consequences for their actions. They just say they are sorry and expect to be forgiven and go on doing whatever they are doing which is being total hypocrites. I am in an argument of sorts with one of my dearest friends right now who has fallen into this same pattern using religion as a basis to justify anything they say or do and then try to judge me for not going along their path. It is the hypocrisy, stupid.
The "HYPOCRACY" is up to his eye's and I don't think he can see anymore its so deep. Its amazing how these white washed walls like Joe on morningjoe and the rest of the republican party except those calling for him to resign. Can continue to say its alright for him not to resign that's real christian. He needs a stern "REBUKE" and that would be to resign how does look for the youth who believe in God and say hey Mark Sanford did it so can I . RESIGN,RESIGN,RESIGN
What an amazing country we have!
If Eliot had traveled to Nevada he would probably still be governor.
If Sanford had not traveled to Argentina he would probably remain as governor.
Craig traveled to Minnesota and is still gayboner.
The 2000 pound purple elephant in the room is that Mark Sanford is clearly having a nervous breakdown. He has just gone nuts. Blabbering stream of conciousness confessions, crying and lying is not a sign of mental health. He needs to resign because as of now he is a danger to himself and others.
Unrestrained narcissism.
---and he's been reading too much Rod McKuen poetry.
Male menopause...it's his ho'mones....
This guy was suppost to be the GOP Savior. If this is all they got than they may never be able to resurrect the GOP. Any man who would cheat is by no means a man. Yes we should forgive but, we should not tolerate this guy or anyone else to hold a public office. If you can lie to your loved one's than you can easily lie to anyone else. This jackass needs to resign!
Only dems say he was supposed to be the GOP Savior....guess it support their cause.
Where did you come up with that fiction? If you Google you will find all kidns of Republican and right-leaning references that list Sanford as a contender. Heck, a Republican columnist even posted here after he disappeared claiming it proved he was an even better candidate for President.
Mr. Sanford...hand in your letter of resignation and give us all a break from the drama of your little life.
To me the answer is simple...Resign. Move to Buenos Aires and begin anew. The boys would have a hot step-mom and cool place to visit for the holidays. I'm sure there's a ranch out there he can buy and maybe a backhoe he can rent from a gaucho to dig his precious holes.
Are you sure that the boys would have a hot step-mom. To begin with that grainy TV shot is almost a decade old, and are you sure that ole Maria, who has a husband, is going to want this homely 'cracker' without his wife's fortune, position and power. These two people dont't really even know each other. There is a big,big difference between living with a man as emotionally unstable as Sanford than screwing him 4 times over a 12 month period.
Excellent points and exactly what Maria is probably thinking....
Both Sanford and Spitzer proved to the world that good sex is worth more than the position of governor. It is a message that should awaken all those that strive for a career that does not include enough time in the bedroom. They both deserve our respect and admiration for teaching us the truth and essence of life.
Sanford and self-flagellation....perfect together.
resign, already and leave via the backdoor--no more masochistic "news" conferences.
This comment has been removed by The Daily Beast's editors.
BTW: I heard that Jenny Sanford is heir to the Skill Saw empire...Sanford need to watch out for those circular saws....lol
This is no longer about sex. It is about a self-absorbed man who is unfit to lead. He is now refusing to release his financial records to show whether or not he has misappropriated state funds. According to GOP Knotts, he was caught diverting $100K federal grant into his personal PAC last year and was allowed to repay it. He isn't trustworthy and is unfit to do the job. He has been the worst governor in SC history leading the state to double digit unemployment, the nations second highest crime rate, unfunded schools that need to be condemned and has drown the state in debt. SC cannot afford 18 more months of Mark Sanford.
He sort of like Georgie-boy Bush with a sex drive...dangerous guy!
Hey, Jeez. Give us all a break. This guy is a redneck in a suit who has been reading Rod McKuen poetry. If I hear one more rambling, narcissistic apology I'm going to Ralph!
DB, quit giving this schmuck ink!
This user is no longer registered.
Priceless!
Didn't he use government money to fly to see his lover? That alone should call for his resignation.
He was never willing to forgive anyone else... so I find it fitting that no one should forgive him.
Sanford... "Don't let the doorknob hit ya where the good Lord split ya..."
He's in a mid-life crisis. He's immature, incompetent, derelict of duty, and can't kep his mouth shut. He won't disclose finances and admits to other "lesser liasons", and he's.... barking mad.
I feel bad for his wife and kids, but he needs to shove off.
Good one, morris1030!
I am sitting here trying to think of anything to say to this mans latest...for lack of a better word...repressed sexual RAMBLINGS...I realized something...
This guys speech pattern now resembles someone with Nitrogen Narcossis or someone that has had a bunch of Mini-Strokes...(Or maybe heavy valium,Oxy ect. . . use)
I suggest the house request an immediate physical and psychological examiniation for this person to indeed certify that he is NOT incapacitated and incapable of continuing as Governor of the State of South Carolina.
Just my observations you're free to disagree.
The Daily Beast is quickly becoming irrelevant. Who cares about another political sex scandle. The left glorified Clinton takes the booby prize. Sanfords career is ending because conservatives will hold him accountable for his actions not because of liberal bullsh*t. It just diverts attention from the raping of America and its monetary resources with the likes of socialized medicine or this infamous crap and tax bill. Daily Beast should hold their president accountable for broken promises. TAXES, TAXES, TAXES. His numbers are dropping and even the dems are jumping ship.
Keep telling yourself that.
For the 100th time or more, it's not about sex. It's about (1) job abandonment, being AWOL from public office, in order to pursue an affair, and (2) hypocrisy. Your attempts to deny that by saying it's only about sex are transparently partisan.
Please.
These pecadillos are not about sex, and anyone who tries to make them so is missing the bigger picture.
The point is this:
If a person is a hypocrite, a liar, a thief (of resources, if not material possessions), and a cheat in his most intimate personal relationship, what guarentees does anyone have that his habitual lying, cheating, stealing and hypocrisy wont'tspill over into every aspect of his life?
By no means do I think any party currently extant in the USA has any lock on morality or ethical behavior.
Nor do I think any politican should have anything to say about the morality of any issue - there is a reason the founders tried to separate church and state.
However, morality and ethics are not the same thing.
How Sanford conducts his personal life is indicative of how he conducts his professional/public life.
He cheated his wife, he cheated his constituents. He lied to his wife, he lied to his staff and his state. He moralized against political foes, he violated those stated morals. He broke his vows to his wife, he broke his vows to his state.
And the saddest thing is that he could have had an open, honest, legal out from this mess at any time. Had he left his wife quietly, gone on to date' or even marry his extramarital partner, he would have been far, far less of a scandal.
He might have even kept his office.
But no one wants a govenor who lies, cheats, steals and can't keep his word, even when people are watching.
What would he do when they are not watching?
Great points! I think we all want the liars and cheats held to account.
I thought it was bizarre when Lindsey Graham (the Godfather of Sanford's youngest son) was on Meet the Press and said that Sanford could keep his gig if he "fixed things up with Jenny".
Talk about integration of church & state!
Graham is an odd duck as well - does anyone know his story? I cannot find out if he is married or what? Granted, I have not looked that hard, but if someone knows what his trip is, please direct me - along with Andre Bauer.
Graham is not married.
I don't have any info on him-
But it's apparent to me when I look at
And listen to him that he
Is a closeted gay man.
This guy is toast. I predict he will resign before the week is over.
"14 of the 27 Republican state senators in South Carolina have called for Sanford's resignation"
-----------------
I love the Daily Beast and all but how about getting a local perspective on his issue by talking to a reporter from S.C.?
If you read the local newspapers, you will find out that Sanford is not liked by many of these Republican characters. He has been fighting with EVERYONE (Dems and Repubs) over the stimulas. Additionally, the Lt. Gov. is also a rival. If he didn't back down from the fight over the stimulas, what makes DB believe that these same folks will have any influence on him now?
If Sanford leaves, he will be replaced by the Lt. Gov. who is also a Republican but also not liked by the Republican establishment. Sanford is viewed as the lesser of two evils.
However, I do enjoy the national Republicans who are coming to Sanford's defense by making up lame excuses after he has broken what THEY told us was the "most sacred" vow to God. I used to think the Democrats were the only spinless ones, but I've come to realize that Republicans are also spinless when it comes to following their OWN stated principles. Do as we say not as we do. Indeed.
Our God fearing governor was SET UP by the DNC and that MEXICAN TRAMP and anyone who thinks otherwise should be slapped upside their heads with the Good Book, New Testament,of course.
You make a lousy troll.
Keep trying.
okay. But I'm not really all that bad at it.
Uh, this is going to be called "political correctness," but you should know that Argentina is maybe 3000 miles from Mexico. Just FYI, ALL people south of the border are not "Mexicans."
PC, you say? I say it's just courtesy. You don't call your Austrian forefathers Polacks, do you? And it also shows the world that American citizens are not all xenophobic, ethnocentric little shits.
The man is clearly unfeeling, unhinged or both. The fact that he cannot think past his "feelings" for his mistress and have any empathy towards the wife and children that he betrayed speaks volumes more than the affair. He left the state without reliquishing his powers (in case of an emergency like an evacuation) and there was no living soul in the country who knew where he was. As if that's not enough, he give these long, tearful, rambling interviews about his soul mate twisting the knife in the heart of his wife and children. He has no empathy right now for anyone other than himself and the mistress. It is not good for his state or his party to keep bragging about his epic romance but he cannot or will not think of others. Did you hear his answer to his SC senator when he was asking his to resign? "What you need to understand is this is a story of true love". The guy has lost it. He is clearly unfit to lead right now.
Thank you.
