Is Caroline a Shoo-In?
New details this morning as Caroline Kennedy starts her bid to claim Hillary Clinton’s vacated Senate seat. According to The New York Times, Kennedy has called several prominent New York machers and plans an upstate trip similar to Clinton’s famous “listening tour” to firm up support. Sources close to Gov. David Paterson, who will make the appointment, say that Kennedy is now a “clear front-runner.” “The upside of her candidacy is that the 2010 ballot will read Kennedy-Paterson,” a source told the paper. “David craves national attention and money. If you connect the dots, it leads to her.” A source tells the Daily News, “She is in.” The New York Post reports that Kennedy has the quiet support of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Caroline Kennedy has as much right to run for a senate seat as the current holder of that seat. Hillary's qualifications when she ran was being a former first lady.
Admittedly I am inspired by the poetic prospect of the keeper of the flame avenging the murders of her father and his brother through the display of a profile in political courage doing what is right rather than expedient. But Caroline Kennedy has earned consideration aside from that. She is, after all, a Harvard graduate and graduate of Columbia Law School. She has authored two books on the subject of civil liberties and edited five others. She has done a great job for the public schools of New York City. And she did good work with the confidence of the president-elect when he put her in charge of finding a running mate. I think she will prove to be a very effective senator for the people of New York. And if she does not - well they won't have to put up with her for long. I hope she gets the interim appointment.
Poor Hillary. She really wanted this seat to go to someone she could take it back from later. Caroline Kennedy is young and will sit in it for 25 years.
Hil should have run in Canada where you can sit in the Parliament AND be Minister of Foreign Affairs.
What ever happened to standards or qualifications? Today being a celebrity is enough to get you a Senate seat. First Hillary, then the Messiah. Next Caroline? It's only a matter of time until Simon Cowell or somebody gets a seat.
Hillary was just an ordinary first lady of the White House - Bill and Hillary run away from Arkansas and New Yorkers gave her free pass to become the Senator and run for US Presidency.
CAROLINE KENNEDY was the First Daughter of US President. She grew up with renowned politicians within the family. I believe she will make a fine US Senator, a graceful friend for the poor and classy representative for the New Yorkers.
GO Caroline!
The Federalist Papers make it clear the rich, white men who set up our system of governance, wanted a moat between money, the wealth class, and the hoi poli. They wanted something similar to the House of Lords. They set up House of Represenatives to function as a House of Commens and the Senate became our House of Lords. The Founding Fathers were sure if the moneyed class had a more than equal share in power, it would behove them not to tear down the new democracy. In this day and age, i don't agree with this principle and my husband and i argue this point often.
This is all to say, as things now stand, it makes perfect sense to allow our American Princess into the Senate. She is more qualified than most rich people in public service, brains and poise.
Thank you.
