Can Hillary Quell Mexico?
What’s on Hillary Clinton’s agenda in Mexico today? The American appetite for drugs may be fueling the drug war in Mexico, but then Attorney General Eric Holder's refusal to reinstitute a ban on the sale of assault rifles isn’t making things any better. Also, Congress has reneged on a Nafta promise to allow Mexican trucks into the U.S., and in retaliation Mexico instituted tariffs on 89 American products, targeting those that are produced in the districts of well-connected congressmembers. Finally, many American communities fear that Mexicans will cross the border to take already scarce jobs even as the U.S. recession spreads across the border.

Americans have good reasons to worry about Mexicans taking their jobs during this time of scarce jobs. The Obama administration has stopped the E-Verify job enforcement program.
I simply don't understand why they refuse to obey the law. If they don't like the law, they should be getting it changed not flouting it.

Assault rifles? I am SO tired of this moniker. FYI: If they aren't coming from here, they will get automatic models from the countries to the south - and if you think it's bad now...oh boy. How bad does it have to get before we start calling these gangs/thugs what they are: terrorists and give all accused a fast track to a firing squad/hanging/etc.

Mexican drug gangs are seriously bad news, but are most certainly not new. What is new is how the media is framing the problem. Words like "dire" and "new front of terror" raise some suspicious hackels on the back of my neck. Especially when I hear that Blackwater (I mean Xe!) is already having meeting with politicians. Having been booted from Iraq mercanary companies, like Xe, are looking for new markets. Makes me wonder how intense this problem is, or if, yet again, the public is being manipulated with fear mongering.

Ok its simple, if Obama wants to look 'cool' to the American people and promote cost cutting/efficiency - all he has to do is back a program to have the US borders (land and sea) patrolled by MQ-1 Predator UAVs. Ok it's a bit 'skynet' but the American people like high-tech warfare, and the idea of 24/7 early warning border patrol systems would probably sit well. That and it shows how the war budget can be used to actually 'save' money for once!

What exactly do you mean by "Attorney General Eric Holder's refusal to institute a ban on assault rifles isn't making things any better"? You modify a statement from the NY Times article, that in itself has absolutely no provenance or bearing on the subject being discussed--there have been no substantiation or proof that the Mexican/American drug violence has anything to do with the availability to U.S. citizens of so called assault weapons. But the New York times throws it in their article, further tattering any of its remaining verisimilitude, and the Daily Beast blithely follows along. It's perfectly alright to have an anti-gun agenda, but do try, as the Times has failed to do, to keep it from your news articles...Keep in mind, also, that the Times is a failing publication, due, in no small part, to its lack of responsibility to straight-forward reporting.

Well I think they ought to send a few platoons of soldiers to the border, fully arm with orders to shoot to kill on sight.
Run that program for a year, and lets see how many choose to sneak across the boarder in their underground tunnels...
And while we're at it, lets drop a few bombs on the boarder to destroy the tunnels, then build the damn wall as was proposed, voted on and signed into law by Bushy boy. Not some cheesy chain link fence!
Then enforce the damn laws we have on the books, let ICE round up all the illegals and send them home and ban them for life from ever re-entering the United States.
Then FORCE all companys to use E-Verify!
STOP all aid to Mexico, STOP letting their inferior product from being shipped into the United States, and STOP shipping US Made products into Mexico....
Then lets see how they react.
Blast the media, does it do any good? NO!
They will always print what they want no matter the situation, opinion, etc.
Take for example Veterans, they lay down their lives to fight a war that our President and Congress chooses to go into, then when they come home the Veterans Affairs say oh, sorry you got hurt, but you're not our problem now.
This has been going on for more than 50 years! Do any of you or the media care? NOT!
So gimme a damn break, shoot the damn illegals on site, send the rest home, FORCE E-Verify and lets call it a day and NO MORE AMNESTY!

We should put troops on the border to patrol 24/7. Good training and good protection. Flood the border with troops asap. We should have complete control over our borders all the time.

"An estimated 7000 deaths"
How many of those are American? I agree with the suggestions of tightening security on the border, because we have innocent American citizens caught in the middle of a senseless drug war.
This threat needs to be resolved first because, WELL, IT'S ON OUR F*CKING BORDER!
What's the difference between "terrorists" murdering people on 9/11 and Mexican drug cartels slaying those in the south.
As far as I'm concerned, it's the same thing!
I'm disappointed in the fact that the media has dulled this issue to an utter silence over AIG giving out bonuses and fixing our economy.
Are the lives of innocent Americans less important than their financial well being?
If their not alive, what is fixing their mortgages going to do?

JD92840: Your lack of compassion for your fellow human beings goes beyond any rational discussion of how to manage immigration, or border control in general, to a very dark place indeed.
The people coming across now are doing so for the same reasons my ancestors came over on boats from Germany and Ireland, over 100 years ago. Your kind hated them, too. The things being said about Mexican and Central American immigrants now are identical to a letter to the things that were being said about my great-great-grandparents. The laws may be different now from what they were in previous generations, but the motivation for transplanting one's self remains the same.
An America that would kill "illegals on site" (sic) is absolutely NOT an America worth protecting. Any solution to the issues of illegal immigration will not come out of such xenophobic, hateful and violent sentiment, but rather out of a broad-based consideration of all of the dynamics involved.

If you think America is not worth protecting with force, you need to get your butt back over to Germany.

America is worth protecting with force, and I absolutely do respect your service to those ends, but that is not at all what we're talking about here.
Please understand the vast difference between rational policies of national defense (which as a disabled veteran I'm certain you know better than anybody) and what JD92840 is calling for.
JD92840 is no patriot, for he has evidenced that he cares not for any of the laws upon which our country was founded. The garbage he spews has nothing in common with the country of my birth. It has nothing in common with the country that sent my grandfathers to fight against tyranny in the Battle of the Bulge. It has nothing to do with anything that made the real USA the greatest country on Earth.
Please understand that I stand with you in supporting the America we do live in, but that I will not stand for that wonderful country descending into a martial law banana republic! I want a solution to the problems of illegal immigration as much as the rest of you, but I WILL NOT STAND for letting jingoistic fear and filth getting the best of our nation!

Pelosi stopped the wall! Reid too. Do you think they are going to send out troops to kill those who might vote for them? Never mind what Americans think. They are putting their party and themselves first! Is this new? No, of course they all do it except this time it is gangs with guns and drugs and they have no conscience! I wonder how Pelosi and Reid will sleep when the gang wars come across the border full force?

I understand what you're saying and JD92840 doesn't need me to defend him but he is a patriot. I would be willing to bet that your ancestors came here legally. And I seriously doubt they brought illegal drugs in with them. And I also doubt any of them were criminals. This is a big difference in what is flooding our southern borders. And we're not just talking about Hispanics. Terrorists from Jordan,Saudi Arabia, and Syria are coming across right there at the Ciudad/Del Rio border by the dozens. We are fast becoming a Banana Republic alright. I truly believe that the average American is getting fed up with the Pelosi-politically correct-bullshit and want whatever action it takes to stop this madness.
mmcgu001
Well how about legalizing drugs for once? Regulate it like alcohol and cigarettes WITHOUT the unconstitutional taxes attached!
uhmmm....SCHIP
hardrain
Unfortuantely the real solution is not one we are prepared to enact. It is the same solution to the murderous regimes in the Middle East. We have cut off their FUNDING. Why do we tolerate nations that harbor and encourage terrorists? Because we want their OIL. Why do we tolerate the Mexican drug cartels? Because we want their DRUGS! End their money-end their power. But that means actually considering legalizing, but no one has the guts to say it, let alone formulate a plan to do it.
Thank you.
