Conservatives Support Gitmo Move

Could Glenn Beck be next? Three highly respected conservative figures—Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist, American Conservative Union founder David Keene, and former representative Bob Barr—have endorsed a plan to move terror detainees from Gitmo to a maximum-security prison in Illinois. In a joint statement, the men say “the scaremongering about these issues should stop,” and then say the transfer is necessary to “preserve national security” while avoiding “sweeping and radical departures from an American constitutional tradition.” The plan, they argue, “makes good sense,” since taxpayers have already invested in the “little used” $145 million facility.

It really doesn't matter what the out-of-power conservatives say about the move. The closure of Gitmo and the move of the detainees to the US will only occur when Obama quits dithering and actually makes a decision. Obama's FAILURE to close Gitmo as promised, like his FAILURES on job creation, health-care reform, climate change legislation, bringing the troops homes on Iraq, and winning the war in Afghanistan all show that Obama himself doesn't have the ability or the character to follow through on his campaign promises.

You crack me up. Besides always hangng around here to be the first to comment, you really need to oppose Obama regardless of the issue. So if the article had been about Obama annoucing the plan to move them I'm confident you would have railed on about what a terrible idea it was. Instead you condemn him for having not attacked yet and breaking a compaign promise (predicting the future since it hasn't been broken yet). It really doesn't matter what he does, it would have to be wrong to you.

So does all this anger get you worked up or are you just having fun? Hopefully the latter for your sake.

Although I agree with your retort above, I can't help but think Plantagenet is being paid by the Right-Wings to post these Obama hating comments. I say this because, he's always the first to post a comment and when we tell him how much of a cuack he his, he/she never really responds.

I like to use the word dithering in this context, even though it's not the appropriate word for indecisiveness, and even though I've never ever used it before until Dick did. But, since Fox uses it every day now, naturally I must too.

Cliche and rhetoric I heard on Fox
Cliche and rhetoric I heard on Fox
Cliche and rhetoric I heard on Fox
Dithering Dithering Dithering
Cliche and rhetoric I heard on Fox
Cliche and rhetoric I heard on Fox
Death panels Death Panels
Cliche and rhetoric I heard on Fox
Cliche and rhetoric I heard on Fox

If someone disagrees with me (Fox News), then they are a liberal that is a bigger threat to this country than Al Qaeda. Or, if they're a conservative that disagrees with me (Fox News) then they are irrelevant. Basically, if they agree with the president, fuck em.

But then we wouldn't be able to justify the "War on Terror".

Yes, let's stop spreading the lies about those attacks the Government "says" have been happening. Who really believes that all those people died or were injured in New York, or Kenya, or aboard the USS Cole....what nonsense. This "War on Terror" is just a fabrication to subvert our constitutional protections and there is no justification for it.

Fat Freddy you are sooooo right.

I don't believe anything the government tells me. And I don't take, very seriously, the news media which most of the time acts as nothing more than a public relations bureau for the DoD.

The War on Terror is as much of a joke as the War on Drugs. A very bad joke. You might find this hard to believe, but it is possible to fight terrorism without invading other sovereign nations and overthrowing their governments, spending billions of dollars and thousands of American lives or sacrificing our Constitutional freedoms and protections. They are already using the Patriot Act against American citizens for suspected crimes other than terrorism. The government already has too much power. Now, they are trying to use fear to gain even more power. It amazes me how quickly people in this country are so quick and eager to just roll over and hand over more power to the government. Not me. I've got this thing I like to do, it's called thinking, and I'm not a very good American because I like to form my own opinions.

I said, "I don't take, very seriously". I don't necessarily believe MSNBC, Fox or CNN. I certainly don't take any of their "opinions" seriously. I get most of my news from CNBC and Bloomberg. That's the only news that really matters, right? Money? Except for state and local issues. Opinions I get from Libertarian and Progressive Blogs. I read both, then draw my own conclusions. Years ago, I used to subscribe to both The New Republic and The National Review.

Absurdity is the first word that comes to mind when talking of bringing terrorists to America. Gitmo is safe and secure...a long way from the general population.

What a strange coincidence, the crooks of Illinois have also built a prison they can't use. Was it paid by a Federal grant?

Do the politicians in Illinois do anything right? Does the rest of the nation have to suffer their junior Senator in addition to fund prison operations JUST BECAUSE OBAMA MADE A CAMPAIGN PROMISE to close it?

After all, he's broken most of his other promises already.

whitewitch,
I post at TDB because I like to practice my typing by transcribing rhetoric and cliches from Fox and Friends. Sometimes I get tired of repeating only what I hear on TV, so I throw in an occasional irrelevant statement - usually something to the effect of how liberals (ie anyone whom I disagree with) have never done anything right and conservatives are holier than thou in every way imaginable.

Why would anyone be scared of terrorists? Just because their best friends will kill you and your whole family for drawing a cartoon, doesn't make anyone scared does it?

Who wouldn't want to live near that prison? Then the plotters to break them out could move next door to you while they plan the big day. No Place But Illinois! Fine as long as what happens in Illinois, stays in Illinois!!

Again I say... your attitude proves that Osama Bin Laden's attacks were very successful in their overall intent.

Just think... 3,000 people initially die and it changes the landscape of this country forever... socially, politically, and economically. Yet more that 10X that can die every year due to a lack of health coverage and it does not cause near the same kind of effect.

We, as a country, are doomed.

actually according to the the Pulitzer Prize winning website, he's only broken 7 out of close to 500. Hardly most of other promises. I'm sure you'll argue about the legitimacy of the website, but it's always seemed fair to me.

In order to be housed in a federal prison, you must be convicted of a federal crime. Most criminals are convicted of State crimes thus, incarcerated in State Correctional Facilities. People indicted on federal charges and awaiting trial are also housed in federal facilities, usually within or adjacent to the Federal Courthouse, and not the county jail. The federal prison system is completely different than any state system.

If these terror suspects were to be tried and convicted in a NY State Superior Court, they would most likely have to serve their sentence in the Attica Correctional Facility.

I think most Conservatives of a Libertarian flavor, like Bob Barr, do not support secret military tribunals, or off-shore prisons. Similarly, they do not support the Patriot Act. The Patriot Act was meant to fight terrorism, but it is already being used in the War on Drugs. It is my opinion, that eventually the use of these secret military courts would also be used on those accused of crimes other than terrorism, and possibly, eventually, American citizens.

I still stumped as to why Gitmo was created in the first place. Most of the detainees were warehoused in Uzbekistan (worst prisons on Earth). Why did Bush bring to this hemisphere and put them in a perpetual holding pattern (pergutory on Earth)?

If they would have stayed there they could have been dealt with by a military tribunal. As it is now, no matter what the outcome, every is going to be screaming about it.

Let's send them to the ranch in Crawford.

Gitmo was created so that Cheney and Bush could pass the buck on to the next administration, and the next Justice Department. Like you mention, no matter the outcome, everyone is going to be screaming about it, now Cheney can show up on a talk show and criticize rather than be held accountable. KSM was in custody for five years before he was even charged with a crime. Now it's Obama and Holder's problem, not Cheney and Ashcroft's. I like the Crawford idea though, can we dump nuclear waste there, too?

Gitmo was created because we had a lot of terrorist prisoners that would never disavow their desire to kill innocent people. They weren't ever going to be free as a result. Gitmo was a safe place to put these worthless pieces of scum whether they had military trials or not..........they were never supposed to get out.

Then along comes the Oval Office Zero that wants to campaign against Bush for the rest of his life and you get show trials in New York. Then you get smirky people talking about dumping more terrorists in America after Bush spent 7 years keeping them out.

I hope Obama can keep us safe another 3 or 7 years. He already failed in year one and wants to make it easier for the terrorists with this ridiculous decision.
