Daschle's Tax Troubles
Looks like Tim Geithner isn't the only Washington powerhouse in debt to Uncle Sam: Politico reports that former Senate majority leader Tom Daschle—currently nominated to head Obama's Department of Health and Human Services—owes the IRS more than $128,000 in back taxes over the past three years. Most of that money is owed on a car and driver that were loaned to Daschle, for free, by a friend and Democratic fundraiser. A source tells Politico that Daschle does not plan to end his nomination.

I don't understand why Daschle and Geithner are irreplaceable The president would be wise to just replace these people who don't want to pay their taxes. I've been a Democrat all my life but I am so sick of these kinds of people in the party I could scream. Pelosi, Reid should follow Tom and Tim out the door.
I was foolish enough to believe the Change thing.

At this point, I'm finally beginning to realize how deeply systemic corruption is in Washington. These people don't bother to pay their taxes, or they get or try to get all kinds of freebies from anybody willing to give them something. And fundraisers and lobbyists are willing to give these creeps a lot. With many Americans doing little more than scraping by, our elected officials are cheating this system they created. I pay my taxes. No one loans me a car. I'm getting by, but I'm hardly living the good life. The Democrats should dump Daschle, Geithner, and then start vetting everyone in their party. Just like Wall St. execs, these people can be easily replaced.

I am continually disgusted by the fact that many politicians, celebrities and the wealthy feel entitled to not pay taxes and to receive "freebies." I find it amazing that people with high incomes are given free gifts, meals, transportation, etc. while the rest of us work hard and pay our way (clipping coupons!) and our taxes. These people can afford to pay for these things and don't feel embarrassed to accept these gifts. As for the politicians, why would someone give you something for free (whether you report it on your taxes or not) unless they expect something in return? These people need to rethink their value systems. They should be giving gifts (to charities and the less fortunate) rather than be receiving them.

These people are Unbelievable... I think it is time for a real change not just "words". I think it is time for some new legislation. I think all public officials in government should be required to have annual IRS audits. I think they should be required to pay into social security. I believe there should have term limits after which they may not live or work in DC in any capacity for 5 years.

driving mr daschle !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Think President 'Change', 'We can do it' Obama might be eating his campaign slogan now? Geithner and Daschle haven't paid their taxes and will be in the Cabinet of this Administration. Could someone tell me what makes these people so qualified to do their job when the only clear thing here is their intelligence to manipulate the laws we all live by. No wonder Wall Street and Paulson like Geithner, he'll take care of them just like the last Administration. Think Geithner will have them audited now that he's running the IRS or will he just look the other way and use the ordinary citizen as the example of how he cleans up the loopholes?
What good would an annual IRS audit do when in this day and time it's not what you know but who you know and knowing those who write and enforce???? (selectively) can let you make money.
Isn't the guy at the top of the list for Commerce carrying a lot of antilabor baggage? So Congress will continue to blame the Unions and middle America while they are the ones with the Defined Benefit Pension Plans, Healthcare Coverage for Life, Expense Accounts, a salary they get to vote on and they are suppose to represent the voters? What do they know about the everyday life of the voter?
These nominees should make one thing perfectly clear to the Obama Administration, in Washington, the only change he's brought so far is making the people he believes are the best to do the job, pay their taxes. How many others are there that haven't?
Woodnut is right, the change thing is fading fast. The ice storm in Kentucky should wake Congress up to the fact that the House Stimulus Package does not put enough to rebuilding the infastructure. Thought that was a big change campaign promise but I guess the lobbyists and the trying to make friends is the priority. Real change might be if this government took care of its citizens and quit trying to be everything to everyone until each citizen was taken care of. To be clear, a citizen is a legal resident with a valid Social Security number.

Time for another Boston Tea Party in this taxpayers estimation for this government surely does not represent my values let alone represent my voice or interests. This middle class American pays his taxes. It's the patriotic thing to do right Joe Blow the Scrantonian from Delaware. To all those who voted for this change you can believe in, perhaps its time to wake up and inhale the odiferous waff of fancy steaks emanating from OUR capital. The high dollar inauguration has just started America. And we not talking months, we talking years. The bumper sticker slogans will not put food on the table. Empty promises or fancy havardese will not put fuel in the tank. Political favoritism at its best. Time to hug your bible and guns America as the champagne glasses tinkle with noises of understanding and concern for middle class America.

It is time for the flat tax.
I am no Daschle fan. Cannot stand the man. But if you get hired to a high paying job and get your own car and driver do you consider it a perk of the job, or additional income to pay taxes on? I would considerate it a perk, and would use my time in the backseat to work on proposals, call people etc.
