The Final Days

George W. Bush's approval ratings might be among the lowest ever, but the president still has a loyal cast of supporters in one place: the White House. And, Byron York writes, it's because Bush is a good guy who is intensely loyal to his current and former subordinates (with the notable exception of Scott McClellan). Bush gained this loyalty by running a tight ship at the White House, where, even as the pièce de résistance of his presidency floundered, he remained confident and steadfast so that the White House staff would also remain upbeat. He's also quick to defend and compliment those closest to him, like current Press Secretary Dana Perino, who says of Bush: "One day the president called me and said he’d heard I’d had a tough briefing, and that no one wants to stand up there and be a piñata—but that I was doing the right thing and he was proud of me. I have a ton of examples just like that.”

The man has been one of the worst (if not THE worst) President in our history. On almost every front both domestically and foreign, we are in terrible shape because of President Bush's policies and decisions.

So, his staff loves him - who cares?

Those that voted for him - TWICE. If you believe one man steers the nation you are seriously delusional. He may seem to be an idiot - but making him the fall guy is the easy way out!

This helps to confirm my opinion of President Bush. I really can't stand him as president, but if he invited me out for a beer or to a BBQ, I'd be there in a second. Seems like a fun, down to earth guy, just not appropriate as a world leader.

Maybe he and his staff can now start a doomed oil company and keep the love alive.

The notion that a single individual is responsible for all the problems in this country - let alone the entire world, would be laughable if it wasn't so sad. Bush haters will remain Bush haters not because they hate the President, but because they carry within them an internal bitterness that is easily channeled at a figure they know nothing about and have never met. Hatred is the most irrational of human emotions, and the most dangerous.

So what? A lot of war criminals and tyrants are generous with their minions. Hitler loved his dogs, Caligula made his horse a senator....

No, I'll remain a Bush hater because I rationally hate Bush. I didn't LIKE him when he first caught my attention during the 1990s SEC investigation of his insider-trading shenanigans (the SEC said "yes, he did it but he's the president's son so..."). My dislike intensified as I became familiar with his dishonorable military history and his campaign's treatment of John McCain in 2000. All of that was before he became President and presided over an administration that has been an arrogant and unmitigated disaster in absolutely EVERY VISIBLE endeavor (or lack of endeavor). What, exactly, is there not to hate about this guy? The fact that he treats his bunker staff well doesn't mitigate a damn thing. Irrational my ass!

I am sure Bin Laden could not have imagined that his actions would have snowballed into such a massive catastrophe.
