Facebook Breastfeeding Scandal

Is a picture of a baby suckling its mother's breast obscene? If there's any areola showing it is. That's the stance Facebook is taking, and it's not going over well with users. A group on the website called "Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene!" has picked up more than 82,000 members after mothers reported having pictures of themselves and their children removed from the site. Facebook claims the only pictures removed were those that violated its terms of service, which stipulate that photos showing a fully exposed breast constitute sexually explicit material. Angry mothers have staged an online nurse-in by posting thousands of breastfeeding pictures to the site. A Facebook spokesman says: "We agree that breast-feeding is natural and beautiful and we're very glad to know that it is so important to some mothers to share this experience with others on Facebook."

i think breastfeeding is natural and a wonderful thing to do.
but i just don't understand the need for women to take pictures of themselves breast feeding - let alone publishing the pictures. i know for me, when the time comes, it will be a very private thing.

This is just another example of people obsessed with themselves and that what they do is of great interest to everyone else. Yes, breastfeeding is a normal thing, but so is going to the bathroom. Who needs to see that?

I couldn't agree with stevedenver more...Breastfeeding is NOT a sexual act; it is the loving bonding moment between a mother and child that nourishes the child while providing vital nutrients and antibodies. That is why these women wish to share these moments with their families and friends. And, these women are not taking pictures of themselves, but rather, fathers and other family members are snapping these pictures (I imagine these pictures are taken with pride and love, not sex on mind).

Besides, in a day and age where one in four teenage girls has an STD, the answer is not to censor sex, but to discuss it. Or are Americans simply more embarrassed talking about sex than they are talking about the epidemic of STDs striking our youth?

I haven't had the blessing of motherhood yet, but when and if I do, I have every intention of breastfeeding my child(ren) publicly, if necessary, and I will to do so with the pride and love of a new mother, not hide at home or in a public restroom in order to feed my children.

The Baby Boomers have created a generation of prudes and social misfits. What was good for them is not good for us.

The moral "framework" that they have attempted to engineer society into is corrupt, perverse and COMPLETELY incapable of dealing with normal social issues.

A pair of tits in public .. GO TO JAIL. A pair of tits on facebook OMFG the antichrist has come to take us all to hell. May no person look upon a womens breasts ESPECIALLY with child attached - a bit of nip - AAAAAAHHHHHH RUN RUN OMG OMG OMG OMG ..

Seriously folks.. its a pair of tits.

Of course there is nothing wrong with breastfeeding.

There is something wrong with the legal system in America.

If Facebook allows the photos then some parent is going to sue because their child sees the photos. They aren't discriminating, they are protecting themselves.

I don't know why they don't just say that.

Davidpaul,

Breatfeeding can not be compared to going to the bathroom. Yes, they are both "normal" but breastfeeding has significant health and emotional benefits for children. Does it truly offend you to see such a photo? While, I persoanlly wouldn't choose to broadly share a photo of myself nursing, I certainly do not find the photos offensive and I think banning such photos sends an awful message.

I get the logic of Facebook's policy (nipple or areola = oscene) but they need to apply some common sense. Breasfeeding is not obscene -- its one of the best things you can do for your children.

I have seen a lot more offesive things on Facebook
