Fredo Speaks

Alberto Gonzales has decided to insert himself, on New Year’s Eve, no less, into the running for most tone-deaf political statement of 2008: “I consider myself a casualty, one of the many casualties of the war on terror." Gonzales, or “Fredo,” as he was known to President Bush, gives The Wall Street Journal his most extensive interview since he stepped down as attorney general in September 2007. "What is it that I did that is so fundamentally wrong, that deserves this kind of response to my service?" he asks. "For some reason, I am portrayed as the one who is evil in formulating policies that people disagree with.” Gonzales said he is writing a memoir "for my sons, so at least they know the story." He does not yet have a publisher.

Nobody thinks he formulated anything. He was a waterboy who was uninhibited by a simple and necessary concept of lawfulness in performance of a lawyer's duty.

He's writing his memoirs? Of what? The brief periods of time he can actually remember?

A casualty of war? Does he have all his limbs? Was his body battered with shards of hot metal? Did he spend months or years away from his family, not knowing if he'd see them again? This is a disgusting use of metaphor, for which there is no justification. This statement insults every soldier who ever made any kind of sacrifice for the sake of the oath that is taken to defend their country. SHAME ON YOU ALBERTO GONZALES!!!!!!!!!

What a disgusting and self-serving use of the word "casualty." I hope to God that this man was simply speaking without thinking, but I suspect that he actually believes this.

"Have you been drinking tonight, sir?"
"Please step out of the car sir." ...

That has to be the only explanation

How could he write a memoir? I heard his congressional testimony. He claimed he remembered nothing.

Other than the facts that Gonzo is a dedicated liar, that he has no respect for or understanding of the Constitution, that he did parrot anything that Cheney et al told him to say or do anything they told him to do, that he apparently has no sense of shame or respect for himself and his reputation, and other than the fact that he has no morals, I don't see anything wrong with him.

A disgrace to his country, heritage, family, and the very concept of justice. Rot in hell.

What a jerk. He makes hay as Bush's chief toady, supplying legal cover to all kinds of unconstitutional behaviors, then claims he is a casualty. He belongs in prison, convicted of war crimes based on his role in torture and domestic spying. Fredo belongs right up there with Brownie for a heck of a job.

I agree,
-The true purveyers of evil aren't the architects of the deed, but the ones who have sense enough to know better, yet sit idly by while the transgressions occur. If you're in a mac truck that knowingly plows through a crowded plaza killing dozens of people, just because your foot isn't on the gas and your hand isn't on the wheel doesn't make you any less culpable
