Google to Take on Facebook?

Google, Inc. may already be well on its way to taking over the world of social-networking sites, according to sources in the company. The media giant is reportedly set to expand Gmail to include social networking features such as status updates and media sharing in a layout that mirrors sites such as Twitter and Facebook. Google may launch the new features as soon as this week. Spokespeople for the company have declined to comment on the new features or their launch date.

Does anyone think this will seriously be a contender to Facebook? How many sites have come to include social networking features, assumed "Facebook killers" which flop in no time.

I'm not saying Google's social networking features are going to flop, but they could. Users are proving themselves to be more and more reluctant to setting up new networks, having to go through a process of adding and connecting with friends all over again. It's why things like Facebook Connect were born.

Facebook was born to be a social network. Google was not. Lets leave it that way.
