Graham: CIA Lied to Me, Too

Bob Graham
Alex Wong / Getty Images

When Speaker Nancy Pelosi claimed on Thursday that the CIA lied to her about the use and nature of controversial enhanced interrogation techniques—the same techniques that could implicate the Bush Six as war criminals—opponents rolled their eyes at the excuse. But now former Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Bob Graham (D-FL) says the CIA hid details from him, too. In an interview with the Huffington Post, Graham said the agency misled him on the number of times they waterboarded and when they briefed him on it. Graham explains that, when the issue "started to resurface," he asked agency officials to confirm how many times they briefed him on torture. They gave him four dates, but after Graham went through his personal records and disproved three of those dates, he said the agency admitted their mistake and confirmed that he had, in fact, received only one briefing. Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia has also disputed the accuracy of the CIA's briefings records. The CIA has, so far, declined to respond to other publications' questions on the matter.

Where are the rest of the people from Congress to back up Pelosi's story? Or are they all going to leave her twisting slowly, slowly in the wind?

roger...........um the CIA does not brief the whole 435 person congress--that's about a stupid expectation for the CIA: they might as well public the briefing in the newspapers if they're to be expected to brief the whole Congress.

Only the top leaders (majority and minority) and relevant committee chairmen are briefed. Graham was head of the intellegence committee or its senior minority member for years.

Graham wrote a book about the manipulation of intellegence to induce the nation into the Iraq war. Read it, it is chilling. He appealed to his colleagues to read the intellegence estimate on going to war before they voted to do to war--it was kept in a locked White House office and the Senators would have had to actually go to the White House and read it. Very few did. Hillary Clinton voted to authorize the war without reading the estimate as Graham begged her and all her colleagues to do.

What you have here is a he said, she said situation. Since our Congress operates on partisan finger-in-the-wind only evaluation of every issue, what you should do is decide what position serves your preferred party's electoral interest best and bend all information to suit that preference.

It is the American way.

1 - Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Bob Graham
2 - Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia

3 - The CIA has, so far, declined to respond to other publications' questions on the matter.

Don't you see the pattern here, roger37??

Ok the CIA lied but it was because Dick Cheney forced them too and now it goes back to the beginning.

It's funny Neocons must have "count on the Dems not being willing to investigate one of their own." LOL we don't care about party when someone broke the law.

I think is should be said "we SHOULDN'T care about party when someone broke the law." Partisanship is so deeply eroded into the American psyche that we tend to choose the side we're on and bend all else to fit that choice.

I think you are arguing to closed minds.

Erudite engagement. The opposite of non-partisan objectivity is seeing all through the lens of partisanship.

Out not their be a name for that outlook? Can we call it "squiggyism?"

This torture is the ugliest American policy since the internment of thousands of Japanese Americans during WWII.

If Pelosi knew, like REALLY KNEW, and didn't object, then she should pay the price.

BUT she should not pay as high a price as Dick Chaney and his ilk SHOULD pay and MUST pay if we are to truly "move past this" as a nation.

Unless we are all alright with being a nation that tortures.

God help us, some Republicans are. God help us all.

To all of you terrorist-lovers:
Oh please - get over yourselves! You say that 'someone must pay if we are to move past this as a nation' - well, we HAD moved past this as a nation, until the corrupt we-have-nothing-better-to-do-with-our-time haters at the ACLU sued for the CIA photos. This subject WAS all but dead. Open your eyes, the ACLU THRIVES on divisiveness, hate and chaos, that is why they stirred the pot again, they got bored. Until the recent ACLU lawsuit, people were not talking about interrogation photos, they were too busy having their daily love-fest with obama.
I do not believe in torture, HOWEVER, we ARE in a WAR, and one has to be an ADULT about that fact and recognize that war is not pretty. Do you not believe in national security? I do. Do you not believe that the Government has an obligation to keep you, your family, and your friends safe? I do. And that is a very daunting obligation. And I don't think that any President, no matter who he or she may be, can definitively say what he or she might or might not do to protect this country in the face of an imminent terrorist attack or nuclear attack which could potentially mean the death of 10's of thousands of American citizens. Me personally, I feel safer with a President who has a BRASS PAIR, and is willing to do ANYTHING to protect you and yours and me and mine. And I'll tell you what, if that situation ever became reality, God forbid, and the sitting President did not exhaust EVERY avenue to prevent those deaths, guess who would be crying and whining the LOUDEST?!?!????? That's right, all of the bleeding-heart, terrorist-loving liberals!
Look, all I know for sure is that no matter what the leadership of this country is, Democrat, Republican or Independent, the fact is that CAMPAIGNING for the job of Commander-in-Chief is a whole lot different than actually BEING the Commander-in-Chief. So some of those campaing promises go right out the window when you actual KNOW what is going on in the world (all of the DAILY threats against our nation) and what needs to be done to protect the country.
And as far as those who say we look bad in the eyes of the 'international community' - I personally don't give a flying fig what the 'international community' thinks of us, because about a third of the 'international community' is trying to kill us, and the other two-thirds have a nerve being critical of anyone because they all have their own issues. And the bottom line is that the 'international community' is JEALOUS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ALWAYS HAS BEEN, AND ALWAYS WILL BE, AND THEY WISH THAT THEY WERE US!!
UNFORTUNATELY, thanx to obama, we are on our way to being more like them!! Socialism, oh goody.

like-mind

I grew up watching WWII films that showed wartime torture as something The Bad Guys did.

It ocurred to me the other day, though, that any deep research of African-American Studies is comprised of the most inventively heinous torture the Southern Whites were glad to lay on a brutha.

Of course, you'll recall those Real Americans (living in any particular boonies due to Red-Neck Diaspora) heartily yelling out their Hate against N-s and Muslims at those Palin love-ins. Same diff.

Red-Neck Diaspora...........that's brilliant! It encapsulates and describes everything that has happened to my family since the 1930s--going on four generations of us. We are the Hillbilly Diaspora, disbursed from ocean to ocean but still with the Bill Monroe gene in each of us.

Helloooooo! Stop your Madness!! Get the hell out of here! Torture? What took place is not Torture!!!! You are a complete idiot! The SAVAGES that you are concerned about were NEVER TORTURED!!! They were treated too well. Now maybe you should have your memory of 9-11 refreshed. If some terror plot should go down, maybe it should go down in your own backyard with your loved ones then we'll see how you feel about this bogus torture you've been talking about. Hypathetically. What if you found ,God forbid, your Children and Wife beheaded in your home by some Militant Muslims, how would you approach this scum? I can't wait to hear your answer. You are liberal so I won't put anything past you! Even when it comes to finding your family beheaded with my hypathetical question!

nice pics, how about the videos of our guys being tortured and beheaded on the internet, not for what they knew, strictly for who they were and where they are from. The whole story people, not just the bits and parts that appeal to your beliefs and ideals.

And you'd like US to be the ones doing the beheading, is that it?

You can decide. Do you want to be a good guy or a bad guy? Do you want to let THEM decide how dirty things get?

To say others are worse than we are is not a moral argument. We cannot remain a decent people, while being just a bit less horrible than others.

Birds of a feather stick together. Wow, Graham and Rockefeller now remember that they were misled by the CIA too--simply amazing. Nice try, but Ms Pelosi has sunk her own ship with her own words and should resign as speaker. She is no longer an asset, but a liability to achieving the white house's agenda.

The CIA lied to me too! They swore an oath to defend me from all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC. Seems like we have a lot of domestic enemies hell bent on taking this country down. Where will all of you bleeding heart moralists be when the next attack occurs, or a cruise ship/airliner hijacked. You just don't get it..or never will. Defense is the issue. What will you do to defend your family? Apparently, some of the demoncrats on the intell committe were so scared they didn't think waterboarding was enough to illicit information.

You must be one of those 9% Dick Cheney supporters.
Do you even know what they swore on the oath?

http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/pihtml/pioaths.html
Potus:"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

http://inaugural.senate.gov/history/daysevents/vpswearingin.cfm
VP:I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Do you see the part where they say "support and defend the CONSTITUTION of the USA against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
".
Torture is against the Constitution, if you're not protecting the constitution you're not protecting the USA, in fact torture is unamerican.

Now get that trough your brains.

Um.............shortcourse, take a short course on the CIA. It is sworn only to defend us from foreign enemies. Most of us understand that having a covert, domestic national secret police is a Stalinist notion, not one we want here except those too excitable to bother with the facts and the realities.

Just being tough ain't worth much if you go about it being dumb.

Let's be serious. First, for the record, I believe Speaker Pelosi. The question isn't what Pelosi knew or did not is not the issue is she never authorized torture, Cheney did. The Speaker does not condone torture and as for honesty, the Bush administration is well versed on lying to Americans. Bush/Cheney had a very covert way of running the country and how many times did they go behind the backs of Congress and do what ever it was they felt like doing. The CIA is not a source I would believe. They were all Bushites who walked through hot coal to assist him with his agenda. As for CIA operatives, the Valerie Plane leak is still on Cheney's head. I hope the law suit against him is still active.

How about a trade? The Democrats say, "O.K. we'll jettison all of ours who knew about the interrogation techniques about which you Republicans now suddenly seem to be so appalled if all of you Republicans who spoke out in favor of them agree to go as well."We wipe the slate clean and then maybe actually have a discussion of whether or when these tactics can be allowed. Of course, we'd be awfully short of House members for awhile...
