Graydon Carter in Bermuda as Staff Cut
While as many as 20 people were laid off at Vanity Fair this week, following Condé Nast’s order to cut costs at the magazine by 27 percent, Editor in Chief Graydon Carter was soaking up some sun in Bermuda, The New York Post reports. "I think it is extraordinary that he let this happen," said a Condé Nast insider. "It says he is not a leader. That he is not in the trenches, that he is profoundly out of touch." Carter reportedly avoided firing employees that directly cater to him before jetting off to Bermuda, though one of the Post's sources excused his absence, saying he had no control over who was laid off. Condé Nast has ordered multiple staff cuts over the past three weeks in addition to shutting the doors of four magazines. S.I. Newhouse met with Carter and Vogue editrix Anna Wintour together (a rare occurrence) last week to discuss the cuts.

Why is the title for a female editor an "editrix" rather then an editorette?

Apparently you are not familiar with Anna Wintour, a.k.a. Nuclear Wintour.

According to Miriam-Webster.com, the word "editrix" was first used in 1950, however, the word "editress" has been dated to1799.

Graydon Carter is a poofter of the first class. Not shocking that he would leave the dirty work for others to attend to while he suns himself at an exclusive destination. His magazine, like him, is a contradiction - glossy, high fashion advertisements fill the pages, while articles discuss the wrong doings of conservatives and big business. Man-created global warming is a favorite topic, however, the haute couture crowd that the magazine tries to appeal expel far more greenhouse gases into our atmosphere than anyone they complain about from things like globe-trotting on their jets to attend the latest fashion show to using hazardous chemicals to make the dyes that color the fabrics used in their clothing. Not to mention the fumes exuded from the planes and boats required to ship these small batches of clothing to the wives of wealthy liberals who wear them. That group is an unthinking farce. Since Vanity Fair can't put out a magazine without a Kennedy inside somewhere, how about a photo of Maria Schwarzenegger using her cell phone while driving in CA where there's a law against it? Something that actually happened.

Why is this different from the way any other business acts in the US?

Conde Nast is in a very tough position right now but I sure hope we don't lose Vanity Fair. It is a very intriguing magazine.

I have to say that they did an expose on Cheney's doings at the CIA during the buildup to the Iraqi Invasion. I would give my right arm to get hold of a copy of it.

Inside Baseball to me, but I can see why it registers with Tina.

I read Toby Young's book about his time at VF and while he comes across as a lazy unpleasant character, there is a ring of truth to his characterization of the atmosphere in VF being a bit like the court of Louis XVI - a world of excess and privilege divorced from reality. That Graydon Carter reacted so angrily to the book, clearly showed it had hit a nerve. It is clear that he has a monstrous ego and does little other than use his position to socialize (eg the annual VF Oscars party) and do little work. If Si Newhouse has any sense - its Carter who should go.
