Hillary's 'Mixed Record'
What's the state of the secretary of State? Time magazine's Joe Klein takes a look at the first 10 months of Hillary Clinton's tenure and finds a "mixed record." Clinton has three traits that could make her term "memorable," Klein writes: Her "vision of departmental reform," her political acumen, and, "most important," her "international celebrity." Those assets combined for a knockout trip to Pakistan, where Clinton made herself available to hostile lines of questioning and gave candid and honest answers to her audiences. But her overly blunt recent pronouncements on Israeli settlements are "perplexing," says Klein, and at this point it's still unclear whether the White House's foreign-policy goals are being advanced. Hillary, Klein writes, "will have to become a more sure-handed negotiator, and, most important, a trusted adviser to a president who knows where he wants to go in the world but hasn't quite figured out how to get there."

We have a celebrity president and a celebrity secretary of state. However, celebrity without substance will leave a legacy of nothing but failures and broken promises.

Hey Plant: while waiting in line at the checkout I spotted a story in the "Globe" which reported that Obama had exploded in rage and Michelle had been reduced to tears. How come you didn't jump on this "story" in one of your comments? It's about the proper level you operate at.
When the administration is capable of defining its position on the peace process, Hillary will be capable of communicating more directly, more persuasively, and more intelligently than anyone else. Mr. Klein should find his way to Ohio, not get a plumbing license, and badger presidential candidates from his driveway. Let the big girls play in the big leagues, Joe. There's plenty of space for you in the minors.
You make a good point jbrendan. Hillary is very bright and once this administration defines where it wants to go, she will be out in the front taking it there. I am pro-Obama but I am puzzled by his lack of action. Too many promises, not enough follow thru.

I really wonder if Hillary would have been as bad as Obozo? Thinking she knows fewer Maoists & Marxists... still, she is in close contact now at State. One saving grace: ol' BJ is usually out of the news, and that's refreshing.
I doubt Joe Kline can get the bus started. Hillary's been out of the country for ever. She's not in the mood & she's miles ahead.

Joe Klein? Really? Is The Daily Beast now competing with the Weekly Standard and the National Review for who can promote the most failed pundits?
While Klein is wrong almost as often as Bill Kristol is, which is quite a feat, at least Kristol stays on one side of the fence. Klein claims to be a liberal, but is an inept center-right bumbler. Klein is bipundit; he wants to claim liberal bona fides while sucking up to the rightwing media and his corporate overlords at Time.
The only problem is, Klein was outed years ago for being the media whore he is. The question is, why does anyone a)employ him, b) read his drivel and c) take anything he has to say seriously?
I jotted down what I thought his column would say based on the headline, and then read it. Not surprisingly, I was right on the money. If I were a sellout media whore, I too could get a job at Time. Well, at least for the next year, until it goes out of business.
Klein states Hilary's "most important" trait is her international celebrity? Do people give a damn about celebrity?
Do people care about celebrity!? In Joe Klein's world--and one could add, in Tina's (it's the same world)--that's all they give a damn about.
Its all a bit surreal. Hilary knows better than to say the crap she says. So.... I have to assume Obama's plan is to play good cop, bad cop.
Since many people don't like Hilary anywy, she really doesn't have anything to lose.
America is totally biased towards Israel and obviously the 23 % of the World that is Islamic is totally aware of it.
Shamefully too is the large presence of Jews in American's Middle East "team" and elsewhere.
Arabs ,Muslim and Christian have to negotiate with Israeli Jews via American Jews negotiating on behalf of the US.

Wanted to ask this question for a long time. If the Arabs want a Palestinian state so badley why don't some of those big landholders unass some of that land and give it to the palestinians and let them set up. Why does it have to be in Isreal's back yard where they can sling rockets etc into isreal??

We had the chance to put a capable woman in the whitehouse and because of that scuzball Pelosi she was sand bagged by the party. I think Pelosi is Obama's Monica. Hillary was much better qualified than big ears but Pelosi knew she could't control her. Hillary wouldn't have kept her ass glued in Air Force one and having her face plastered on TV all the time. Hillary Clinton's qualifications came from her husband and Pelosi is not the reason she lost so please stop your delusional thinking. She ran a bad campaign that's why she lost. She ruined all her opportunities and ended up deep in debt. She started out with all three elements needed to succeed:
1) The most money
2) Name recognition
3) Support of the establishment
You can bash President Obama all day long but what has Hillary Clinton accomplished as SOS so far? Were she Condi Rice, you and the press would be accusing her of being a complete failure.
