House Votes Tonight on Health Care
President Obama and his fellow Democratic leaders made a strong push for the House's health-care bill among undecided Democrats today as the party worked hard to overcome controversies over abortion and illegal immigration. With the Republicans voting unanimously against the legislation, Obama and Speaker Nancy Pelosi can only afford to lose 40 votes from their caucus, and they, along with Rahm Emanuel, Kathleen Sebelius and Arne Duncan, spent Friday making a case for the bill with fence-sitting Democrats. They had to negotiate with two dozen anti-abortion Democrats over the question of federal funds paying for abortions through government-sponsored insurance plans created by the bill. The group reached a compromise that will allow the pro-life Democrats to put their amendment to a vote of the full House—a risky solution that could backfire if some Democrats refuse to accept the outcome. At the same time, Hispanic Democrats sought assurance that the bill would continue to allow undocumented workers to buy insurance from the marketplaces created by the bill. The vote is scheduled to occur this evening, but there is a possibility it will be delayed.

RECONCILIATION ..............................! get it done.....!
Plantagenet
So Obama did lie when he claimed that illegal aliens wouldn't be covered by this bill.
unsuiatlarge
I hope so. If undocumented workers are allowed to BUY into a health plan they would no longer get a free ride at our emergency rooms. Makes sense to me...
Plantagenet
Obama blatantly lied to the entire nation when he convened a joint session of Congress and promised that illegal aliens wouldn't be covered.
Its clear now that Obama is a deceiver, fraud, swindler, con artist, cheat, fraudster, storyteller, fibber, prevaricator, deceiver, fabricator, etc.
Yup. Obama is definitely a liar.
oaklynne
Yup, Plant is definitely a liar.
piktor
Plant hates him/herself. That's why she/he hates Obama.
Plantkin, YOU LIE !
diamondgirl
Oak, Obama is a liar, all the dems lie, and I am sure we will subsidise the undocumented workers through tax hikes.
Demsdisorder
I'm shocked that people wouldn't want them insured
oaklynne
diamondgirl, give it up.
diamondgirl
Hey Oakbutt, You give it up, you loser. We dont do Socialism in America...
Go get a job and stop looking for hand outs ..
politicalpam
Why not make it illegal to sell food to illegals? They would starve to death, thus no longer needing health care. Only problem is that Repugs would no longer have a scapegoat.
Desertpenguin
PLANTAGENET's comments that start "So Obama did lie when he claimed that illegal..." and "Obama blatantly lied to the entire nation..." use Rules # 1 & 3 of THE 5 RULES OF PROPAGANDA --
1) The rule of orchestration: endlessly repeating the same messages in different variations and combinations.
3) The rule of disfiguration: discrediting the opposition by crude smears and parodies.
The other 3 RULES OF PROPAGANDA ARE--
2) The rule of simplification: reducing all data to a simple confrontation between 'Good and Bad', 'Friend and Foe'.
4) The rule of transfusion: manipulating the consensus values of the target audience for one's own ends.
5) The rule of unanimity: presenting one's viewpoint as if it were the unanimous opinion of all right-thinking people: draining the doubting individual into agreement by the appeal of star-performers, by social pressure, and by 'psychological contagion'.

hey cubic zirconiagirl - that's some nasty "mouth" you've got there. you rightwingers are a little hot under the collar today, chill out.

Said from the horse's mouth:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democratic leaders just emerged from a closed-door caucus meeting that included a personal appearance by President Obama confident the House will pass a sweeping health care reform bill today.
Addressing reporters outside the caucus meeting room just now, Pelosi looked back briefly before announcing what seemed like a deal to pass reform.
It was three years ago today that Pelosi led Democrats to retake the House after more than a decade of Republican control. She said the date was "appropriate."
"It is appropriate that the promise we made [to voters] ... will be manifest today," she said. "We will pass health care reform."- TPM

Although I'm not a fan of Pelosi, I do have to hand it to her if this does pass.
piktor
I sense Pelosi has this under control.
diamondgirl
It will never pass the Senate, you losers
oaklynne
wishful thinking on your part, d-girl.

I foresee some violent times ahead.
I'm going to stay inside until spring.
maspring
Ha!
Hiding will not save you! Our master plan is nearly complete!
We will find you and offer annual check-ups! You will not be able to escape!
Those who resist will be given mandatory dental care.
Once all registered Republicans have been given their high-colonics (to free up their cognitive processes) we will move on to the financial system.
Your rates will come down and become more predictable whether you like it or not.

Hilarious!

maspring - I hope everything you said works just the way you said it; wouldn't that be wonderful?
piktor
Ahhhhhh, Republicans abandoning constipation, yes they can!, for Socialist-mandated regularity. That will definetely clear up their thought passageways. Wether they like it or not!
jaydeekay
I'm not a Republican.
jaydeekay
The violent times I see are GOP loonies thinking their rights are being taken away.
rapierwits
beautiful day and I'm watching C-SPAN.
The Republicans looked ridiculous as they tried to shout down democratic congresswomen revising and extending their comments. It took forever for these representatives to give support to the bill because it will increase access for things like cancer screening and protect from bankruptcy.
The the democrats allowed one republican after another to get up and bloviate on the House floor against the "job killer" bill; including Michelle Bachman, who said that the bill will "destroy our economic economy". It took less than half the time and allowed the debate to move forward and on to other business.
It seems like only the Democrats are trying to promote civility and expediency in carrying out the people's business...
ThinkAgain
Were you born yesterday? The bloviation is just for show. The leaders are behind closed doors selling out, buying votes, spending your money on crap that has absolutely nothing to do with healthcare.
ThinkAgain
What exactly were these people doing in those months that the Senate was trying to get their bill out of committee? Couldn't they have worked this stuff out? Now they're wheeling and dealing last minute nonsense just to meet another artificial deadline which produces yet again another bill that isn't the final bill.
These are the people you want running healthcare?
AlanD2
Have you forgotten that there were 3 separate health care reform bills passed out of 3 different House committees?
None of them were identical, and now the differences have to be worked out. Trying to get enough votes seems to be forcing some changes too.
By the way, our government already does a fine job of running 60% of our nation's health insurance - Medicare, Medicaid, and VA health care. I would be happy to have the government run all of it.
Only Republicans seem determined to protect the profits of the insurance industry.
winston1
R2D2 The Republicans are trying to protect the 85% of people who are against this fradulent health care bill.
AlanD2
Nice lies, Winnie.
ThinkAgain
They're supposed to be paying for this with 300 billion of dollars of Medicare waste and fraud. That's what you call a fine program? It's scheduled to go bankrupt in 6 years (according to everyone). That's what you call a fine program? You don't give a crap about the financial state of the country. What a selfish irresponsible citizen you are!
RomeoHotel
I see the Republicans are united and the Democrats divided on this legislation.
If this were a GOP-controlled Congress and the reverse situation were at hand -- unanimous Democrat opposition and only 80% GOP support -- the media would be calling it "divisive and polarizing".
Now that the old, elite forms of media are wasting down to nothing, many people have said we need to find a new term because "Mainstream Media" clearly no longer applies. I think "Teabagging Media" is apt. After all, we saw how the WH press corps jumped to their feet when Obama entered the room, after remaining seated every time Bush came. And we know given their 96% Dem loyalty that it would have been more appropriate for them to have fallen to their knees and opened their mouths. They're "Teabaggers For Obama".
periscope
I see the Republicans as monolithic and the Democrats fractious on this legislation.
It's remarkable that the Republicans aren't more highly criticized in the media for being in such "lock-step-mentality," or is it just the fear that the Special Interests will withdraw their monetary support and the right-wing loonies will designate any Republican who has a conscience (like Ms. Scozzafava), as a "RINO?"
The Republican Party continues to be a national failure, fraud and disgrace.
perrycindy
don't forget no and beholding to wasp's and not in favor of any women's issues and i could go on and on
RomeoHotel
Yes, perrycindy, it's very telling that those rightwing freaks quote WASPs like Thomas Jefferson and George Washington and never say that Mao Tse-Tung is one of their favorite philosophers and Hugo Chavez one of their most admired foreign leaders!
Wait a minute ... How were Mao and Chavez on "women's issues"? ... Nevermind. Forget I asked. Go back to watching CNN where the quotes about rightwing freak leader Limbaugh are real.
piktor
Republicans have been defined by the media as The Party Of No. The only news here would be some GOPer going rogue and actually voting for the good of America.
spotted
Pik - If even one went rogue, they'd be lucky to live to see Sunday morning intact. Knowing what publicity whores everyone in Congress is though, I wouldn't bet that a Republican wouldn't vote for the bill. They'd be the toast of all of the chat shows.
RomeoHotel
periscope, you didn't get the memo?!?!
The Teabagging Media has been reporting all year on the "Civil War in the GOP" -- where have you been?.
Repeat after them: "The extremists led by Limbaugh/Malkin/Beck are attacking the GOP moderates! Party leaders like Steele/Cantor/Gingrich are the targets! The GOP is simultaneously exploding and imploding!"
Get with the program before you lose your commenting privileges!
I recommend you watch several hours of MSNBC/CNN/anybroadcastnews and read the front pages of the NY Times/Wash Post/otherTeabaggingpapers (where editorials are on the front pages) before returning.
periscope
MSNBC and CNN have pointed out when Fake News, Flush and assorted other media misfits attack Republicans. They also report the "apologies" made by these Republican politicians as they cowardly genuflect to the right-wing media-whores as their party swirls around the toilet bowl.
What the Republican Party needs is another Flush!
joefrat
RomeoHotel - Fantastic! You are my new favorite commentator. Keep up the good work. Don't let these chumps get away with any of their garbage. Did you read what they had to say about the act of Islamic terrorism that was committed at Fort Hood, trying to keep it distanced from religion. Give me a freaking break! These lefty PC liberals are nutcases, and normally I'd be fine with that, except that now I'm afraid it's going to get us killed. May God bless this great nation.
laughorcryagain
legislation is like making sausage the process is nasty but the outcome isnt bad
the public option has been significantly watered down, so much so that the money has to come from premiums collected and not from taxpayers at large.
this is a huge compromise that was made possible because of a vigorous national debate, so instead of hating on your opposition work with them, there were legitimate concerns with the original public option and they were addressed.
good job america!
piktor
This is how the vote to debate the Healthcare Bill went:
242 Dems for (no GOPers)
177 Reps plus 15 Dems against
http://bit.ly/18K8tw
jojo12
Hopefully, the plan passes & with the passage of time we can iron out those areas that are weak. Right now, half a loaf is better than none. Any step toward health care for all is a step in the right direction.
loveyou777
I am not a nut. This bill is just wrong for America and is being shoved down our throats to satisfy egos.I am 65 disabled, lost my healthcare and retirement after 37 years, limited income, had to file bankruptcy and have two members of my immediate household with no insurance.
angels81
If your 65 years old, why are you not on medicare? Also, after 37 years how come your wonderful health insurance company didn't keep you? Without a public option or medicare and because you are now disabled, there is no private insurance company who would pick you up.
RomeoHotel
loveyou777, why do you hate the elderly, the disabled, the uninsured, and the poor?!?!
What did you do -- read the legislation?!? Stop that right now!
loveyou777
what to someone reads the whole bill and spills the beans to good Americans
Demsdisorder
I do have one question. How much will this plan cost the average person? who will not be insured and why?
ThinkAgain
Oh happy day. The tax and spend liberals are back recklessly throwing money at problems they say we're too dumb to even know we have. I'm sure it'll work better this time though.... why wouldn't it?
Demsdisorder
I don't think the House was ever the problem as far as passing the bill. it is the congress and i don't think it has any chance of passing there after the two bills are merged. JMTC.
Its just a shame President Obama didn't keep his promise to support gay/women's rights.

The republicans know that they are liars and losers. Those
are the reasons why this plantagenet is slandering the USA
President. She and the other crooked republicans are also
racists. They can not stand having a black person as a USA
President or a latino woman ( Sonia Sotomayor ) as a Supreme
Court Justice.
This plantagenet and the other paid republicans
( bribed by the stinky USA Health Care Industry ) are against
undocumented individuals. For hundreds of years undocumen-
ted individuals had been the engine of the USA economy. They are the ones that had been doing the work that the crooked
republicans are to chicken shits to do.It is obvious that any
undocumented individual has better morals and guts than any
of those white crooked republican ( bums ) senators.
Who are the ones taking the bribes from the stinky
USA Health Care Industry? The crooked USA republican senators are the ones taking the bribes.
It is time to pass the single payer Public Health
Care Bill as soon as possible. And after it passes this bill needs to be made effective immediately.Otherwise the Health
Care Industry will keep screwing the USA taxpayers.
By the way maspring has the best comment in The
Daily Beast.Congratulations maspring keep it up.

The President said the undocumented people were not in the bill did something change and now they are finely going to be taken care of ? I for one think when they cross the border the are now Americans and we need to respect them and help them.
Hairball
America is known as the land of opportunity but we do have laws.
joefrat
Demsdisorder - FYI, Narco-terrorists have crossed the border from Mexico and have killed more American citizens in our streets, either through what they sell or direct violence than Al-Qaeda ever has. They're not all hard working dishwashers, busboys or construction workers. Get a clue.
joefrat
Sorry Demsdisorder, I just read your other posts. I missed the sarcasm.

Alternate chorus:
Down with the
Stinky stinky USA Health Care Industry
Stinky stinky USA Health Care Industry

What is with the use of "stinky" as their insult of choice? I still can't make heads or tales of it. It's like a 3 year old insulting you.
Thank you.
