FINAL STRETCH

House Votes Tonight on Health Care

President Obama and his fellow Democratic leaders made a strong push for the House's health-care bill among undecided Democrats today as the party worked hard to overcome controversies over abortion and illegal immigration. With the Republicans voting unanimously against the legislation, Obama and Speaker Nancy Pelosi can only afford to lose 40 votes from their caucus, and they, along with Rahm Emanuel, Kathleen Sebelius and Arne Duncan, spent Friday making a case for the bill with fence-sitting Democrats. They had to negotiate with two dozen anti-abortion Democrats over the question of federal funds paying for abortions through government-sponsored insurance plans created by the bill. The group reached a compromise that will allow the pro-life Democrats to put their amendment to a vote of the full House—a risky solution that could backfire if some Democrats refuse to accept the outcome. At the same time, Hispanic Democrats sought assurance that the bill would continue to allow undocumented workers to buy insurance from the marketplaces created by the bill. The vote is scheduled to occur this evening, but there is a possibility it will be delayed.

Obama blatantly lied to the entire nation when he convened a joint session of Congress and promised that illegal aliens wouldn't be covered.

Its clear now that Obama is a deceiver, fraud, swindler, con artist, cheat, fraudster, storyteller, fibber, prevaricator, deceiver, fabricator, etc.

Why not make it illegal to sell food to illegals? They would starve to death, thus no longer needing health care. Only problem is that Repugs would no longer have a scapegoat.

PLANTAGENET's comments that start "So Obama did lie when he claimed that illegal..." and "Obama blatantly lied to the entire nation..." use Rules # 1 & 3 of THE 5 RULES OF PROPAGANDA --

1) The rule of orchestration: endlessly repeating the same messages in different variations and combinations.

3) The rule of disfiguration: discrediting the opposition by crude smears and parodies.

The other 3 RULES OF PROPAGANDA ARE--

2) The rule of simplification: reducing all data to a simple confrontation between 'Good and Bad', 'Friend and Foe'.

4) The rule of transfusion: manipulating the consensus values of the target audience for one's own ends.

5) The rule of unanimity: presenting one's viewpoint as if it were the unanimous opinion of all right-thinking people: draining the doubting individual into agreement by the appeal of star-performers, by social pressure, and by 'psychological contagion'.

In Switzerland you go to an organization that with euthanize people. If health care reform is not passed soon and implemented expeditiously, the least the congressional Republicans together with the health insurance companies, can provide a similar system in the US. People who are suffering and cannot afford or cannot get insured do to preexisting conditions will then have a way out with dignity. Besides, it will increase profits for health care insurers who will no longer have to pay claims for the terminally ill and for those whose treatments cost too much be profitable.

Said from the horse's mouth:

Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Democratic leaders just emerged from a closed-door caucus meeting that included a personal appearance by President Obama confident the House will pass a sweeping health care reform bill today.

Addressing reporters outside the caucus meeting room just now, Pelosi looked back briefly before announcing what seemed like a deal to pass reform.

It was three years ago today that Pelosi led Democrats to retake the House after more than a decade of Republican control. She said the date was "appropriate."

"It is appropriate that the promise we made [to voters] ... will be manifest today," she said. "We will pass health care reform."- TPM

beautiful day and I'm watching C-SPAN.

The Republicans looked ridiculous as they tried to shout down democratic congresswomen revising and extending their comments. It took forever for these representatives to give support to the bill because it will increase access for things like cancer screening and protect from bankruptcy.

The the democrats allowed one republican after another to get up and bloviate on the House floor against the "job killer" bill; including Michelle Bachman, who said that the bill will "destroy our economic economy". It took less than half the time and allowed the debate to move forward and on to other business.

It seems like only the Democrats are trying to promote civility and expediency in carrying out the people's business...

What exactly were these people doing in those months that the Senate was trying to get their bill out of committee? Couldn't they have worked this stuff out? Now they're wheeling and dealing last minute nonsense just to meet another artificial deadline which produces yet again another bill that isn't the final bill.

These are the people you want running healthcare?

Have you forgotten that there were 3 separate health care reform bills passed out of 3 different House committees?

None of them were identical, and now the differences have to be worked out. Trying to get enough votes seems to be forcing some changes too.

By the way, our government already does a fine job of running 60% of our nation's health insurance - Medicare, Medicaid, and VA health care. I would be happy to have the government run all of it.

Only Republicans seem determined to protect the profits of the insurance industry.

I see the Republicans are united and the Democrats divided on this legislation.

If this were a GOP-controlled Congress and the reverse situation were at hand -- unanimous Democrat opposition and only 80% GOP support -- the media would be calling it "divisive and polarizing".

Now that the old, elite forms of media are wasting down to nothing, many people have said we need to find a new term because "Mainstream Media" clearly no longer applies. I think "Teabagging Media" is apt. After all, we saw how the WH press corps jumped to their feet when Obama entered the room, after remaining seated every time Bush came. And we know given their 96% Dem loyalty that it would have been more appropriate for them to have fallen to their knees and opened their mouths. They're "Teabaggers For Obama".

I see the Republicans as monolithic and the Democrats fractious on this legislation.
It's remarkable that the Republicans aren't more highly criticized in the media for being in such "lock-step-mentality," or is it just the fear that the Special Interests will withdraw their monetary support and the right-wing loonies will designate any Republican who has a conscience (like Ms. Scozzafava), as a "RINO?"
The Republican Party continues to be a national failure, fraud and disgrace.

legislation is like making sausage the process is nasty but the outcome isnt bad

the public option has been significantly watered down, so much so that the money has to come from premiums collected and not from taxpayers at large.

this is a huge compromise that was made possible because of a vigorous national debate, so instead of hating on your opposition work with them, there were legitimate concerns with the original public option and they were addressed.

good job america!

I hope those voting yes realize what they are doing to this country. health care will move from 16% of the economy up to 21%. This will suck jobs out of other sectors and will lead to a shortage of qualified people in the health cre industry, thus further inflating health care and reducing quality.

The Republicans may be the party of "no," but the Democrats are fast becoming the party of "no jobs." This bill is, at best, reckless, at worsem, pure insanity!

I use pill and condoms to be doubly sure. If you are irresponsible then all problems are you own fault.

This is not about what you use, you must think you are super stud, the ultra successful impregnator. Women are perfectly secure with birth control, thank you very much.

I do so at my girls request. Just as i would fully be responsible if anything happened. So i am careful. Not to mention i think if anything of that sort happened her lovely father would shoot me.

I wonder what pushing this bill trough is going to cost America?
i wonder if a person from mexico that is in need of health care will come here and become a burden on this country?
i wonder why we are being lied to?
i wonder why abortion and illegals are now in a bill that we were told by the president they were not? it reminds me of Bill Clinton waving his finger at us saying he "I didn't have sex with that girl" funny politicians
but some still believe them
my momma always said if you lie once you are a liar

Sorry, but abortion is NOT in the bill, besides abortion was already out because of the Hyde Amendment. Stay informed.

Addtionally, health care in Mexico is not costly as it is here. I was not a burden in Mexico because it was affordable.

the Conference of Catholic Bishops couldn't support the compromise put forth by Indiana Rep. Brad Ellsworth to create an independent monitor to make sure that insurance companies didn't spent public funds to pay for abortion, and a number of wavering Democrats wouldn't sign on to the plan unless the church endorsed it

That is no new news that the Catholic Church was the dealbreaker, but as I said it was already a done deal with the Hyde Amendment, but the Republicans wanted more and therefore the Stupak amendment, and that is when the RCC ok'd it.

I am not sure if your concerns about illegal Mexican immigrants swarming across the border for our healthcare are well founded.
Mexico has a complex delivery model one that is privately and employee-employer funded as well as a government subsidized public healthcare system .

Public health care is provided to all Mexican citizens as guaranteed via Article 4 of their Constitution. Public care is either fully or partially subsidized by the federal government, depending on the person's employment status. All Mexican citizens are eligible for subsidized health care regardless of their work status via a system of health care facilities operating under the federal Secretariat of Health.
