Immigration Overhaul Set for 2010
Don’t worry: We figure Lou Dobbs will be back on the air somewhere by then. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said that the Obama administration will push for a path to citizenship to some 12 million illegal immigrants as early as next year. Napolitano said she feared another wave of illegal immigration once the economy improves and therefore promised a “tough and fair pathway to earned legal status,” the New York Times reports, including stricter enforcement laws against illegal immigrants and their employers and a streamlining of the legal immigration system. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) will introduce the bill in December. Predicting a big battle ahead, Gutierrez disagreed with Napolitano’s claim that increased enforcement has improved the chances of a comprehensive overhaul. Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) believe they can get 60 votes for the bill.

Why doesn't someone come up with a policy for getting rid of illegals?
They should set up some government sting like they do with criminals with outstanding warrants... They send them a letter that they have just won a car, boat money and to go to a location and pick it up. Then the cops bust and haul them off to jail. Instead of mailing something to the illegals, they can just drive by the corner of a local Home Depot. Then go deport them. And they should heavily fine anyone employing illegals.

This is not a quick fix type solution. We do have to secure our borders,
but not with elaborate walls like the one that separated Germany not too long ago.
1. we actually gave the border control the resources and man power they need
2. We work more closely with the Mexican government to stimulate growth that can benefit both countries.
3. We make the normal immigration process more accessible to make illegal entry less attractive.
I've spent 4 months combined volunteering in Nicaragua and Mexico and for many people it is an act of desperation to leave EVERYTHING behind. Its a huge gamble for immigrants. People here in the United States complain about things that don't exist for some of the people in poorer countries. I think there must be a way that we can help foster progress in at least Mexico and Central America over the next couple of decades if we are really serious about this problem beacuse the status quo is unacceptable.
Obama will pull a fast one on us. He'll guarantee that the illegals' will not be covered under the H/C plan, and then in 2010, before the H/C plan becomes effective, he will
make all of the illegals' in our country legal. That will insure that they will get coverage, and WE will also have to fork up the subsidies to pay for their coverage. I'm afraid that Obama and the Democrats don't care what the majority wants---they have an agenda, and they will get it thru.
Uh, excuse me but what the majority wants is Obama; that's why he's the Pres. You don't just suddenly have 12 million illegals in the country; this has happened over a very long period of time and we can't just make 12 million people leave here. Some of these people have been here for more than 20 years. What we do need is a realistic program on how to stop further illegal immigration and how to make the people that have been here for a long time and who don't have criminal records become legal. No one but Native Americans are anything but immigrants and in some cases, the illegals didn't cross the border -- the border crossed them. Additionally, these people pay taxes for which they gain no rights; no rights to vote, no rights to Social Security, etc. You're making it sound as though every single illegal is taking something away from you and I find that very hard to believe.

Millions of Americans have followed the current LEGAL process to become citizens. There is currently a 'path to citizenship' for the 12 million illegal immigrants - they need to leave the country, get in line, and wait their turn.
There is no need for new legislation. We need to restrict the services that criminal immigrants can access in this country, perhaps then they can see that they should follow the laws of the country they want to become part of.
The process has been in effect for a long time. The circumstances have changed over the yers, ergo, the methods of dealing with that need to change as well. That is all they are trying to do. Well, of course it will mean more Democrat voters to join those swelling numbers starting to join in. I guess that thought would boost the fear quotient in some people.

This is the best way to do it. America must take responsibility for leaving the southern border in a completely porous state for far too long. Weed out the criminals, and give the rest a path toward citizenship; this gives them a vested interest in obeying the rule of law, because they now have something to lose. However they specialize in hating gay people, family planning clinics, environmentalism, socialism, Darwinism, Kennedy's, Clintons, Carters etc. I've often wondered why they spend so much energy "hating" and very little energy in using their rational thought processes towards something constructive. With over 10% unemployment and a busted budget that finds more than just a little bit directed towards illegals it is not only pragmatic but absolutely necessary to extricate them. Forcibly returning them is of course not pragmatic, but creating conditions upon which they can't find employment and therefore eventually decide to return on their own will is more than doable.
As to being morally defensivble... I mean really, they broke the law knowing what might eventually result. We're not locking them away, fining them, or hurting them in any way. We are sending them back to where they rightfully belong no worse off than the day they illegally entered our country.
Sorry neverlate, you like the President Bush whose failure on this issue you so lament, are not conservative if you believe in thwarting the rule of law -- one of the underpinnings of our Constitution and system of Government.
I think the illegals were aided and abetted by the politicians and big business. So, if we are going to go after them, we should also go after their accomplices. Also, there are reasonable tenants in our law, such as squatters rights, statutes of limitations and such that make a good legal argument for finding a middle ground. I am not suggesting that they should be able to "jump the line," but there is someway to make them earn residency and atone for breaking the law.

Granting amnesty is far more than invoking some kind of statue of limitations. A statue of limitations type of amnesty would invoke no penalty on someone who stole a car. Amnesty for illegals would be more like not only not prosecuting the car thief but also giving them legal title to the car that they stole.

We need a commonsense immigration program dedicated to hard annual quotas and a general amnesty. But one can be sure that the simpleminded lib-versus-con split of Washington will torpedo this obvious idea in favor of an obscure, ineffective, watered-down new policy.
The hard annual quotas make sense, but the numbers need to be much smaller and comprised solely of people with skills and education that can instantly be a net beneficiary and contributer to our society. We need to stop importing poverty -- we have enough of our own already.
Amnesty, as always, is a horrible idea. We tried it on a large scale once in 1986 and have enacted over a dozen miniamnesties since that time. As Dr. Phil likes to say, "How's that been working out for ya"? Not good of course.
We just need attrition through enforcement -- primarily at the workplace. Problem solved.

The government has too much information about us know, you want to give them another form of monitoring thru federal identification, which I am sure would include fingerprinting and possible DNA sampling along with full photo documentation.
And of coarse the fact that you would have to have a permenant residence listed, and it would have to be updated if anything changes or you will be in violation of the new "federal identification statutes" which would be overseen by the new "federal identification enforcement branch" of Homeland Security. Anybody that crosses into the U.S without proper paperwork is illegal --and is committing an illegal act. They are , right there, criminals.
My taxes are being used to teach 'anchor babies 'at my local school... my taxes are for people that have been born here not for illegals.... 60% of my taxes go to the local schools. 60%.... that's a lot.
I can appreciate people that are poor and have problems ... But it isn't America's problem... It's the problem of the country they came from. America cannot take upon itself the problems of the whole world... Hasn't it done enough for the world already... without taking in illiterate criminals... and, yes, they are criminals.
Jay walkers are criminals too. The only difference is the penalty for jaywalking is appropriate. The penalty for trying to escape poverty by coming to America without the proper paperwork is not.
Well, even tho you "understand" how they are trying to escape poverty, etc., you would still deny them a better life. It seems to me that you are breaking the law of humanity and perhaps that's why the illegals don't mind breaking the law of man. The law of humanity supercedes the law of man any time, any day, any where. What would you do if you were being denied your basic human rights? I'm still confused as to what "TAKING OUR JOBS" means. If they live in America, and they have jobs, and they pay taxes, and they use government resources such as public schools... then what is the difference between an "illegal immigrant" and a citizen?
The only time that someone "takes a job" is when jobs are offshored to other countries. Then they have one of our jobs, but don't contribute back to our country.
Oh there you go again, HELLYEAH, spoiling the pity party for the paranoid reactionary crowd. Listening to them scream about how all the good jobs down at the slaughter house have been stolen right out from under their noses; and how our economy is being undermined by the poor guy who cleans up the tables down at the greasy spoon, who is paid as poorly as the single mother waitress, but doesn't get any tips; yep this is a chorus of the deep thinkers.
These deep thinkers are the same ones, who take pride in being able to look directly at the "inferior" human sweeping the floor, while they gorge on their Mac-fries and greaseburgers. They get a kick out of seeing the poor man avert his eyes from their steely gaze. In this fashion, they remind themselves of their "superiority" to the little brown-skinned guy as they hustle back to their cubicles to push their paperwork around.
I do not have the answer to the problem of people coming into our country without proper papers, but have a hunch that any truly viable solution will have compassion as it's foundation.

The same pathetic people who championed big business for years are now complaining about loss of American jobs. Mitt Romney was in the business of downsizing and cutting American jobs that will never return. American corporations have been sending jobs overseas to cut cost and those jobs will never be seen again.
Now the huge financial corporations have hurt our economy through greed and lack of committment to America. As a result, small businesses have closed by the thousands and even more jobs have been lost.
Don't blame illegals for filling in jobs that no American will take.
