Iran Sanctions 'Within Weeks'

World powers could put together a package of sanctions against Iran "within weeks," President Obama said on Thursday, after Iran's silence on a nuclear deal. Under the UN-brokered plan, Iran would have shipped 75 percent of its low-enriched uranium to Russia and France to be converted to fuel plates for a Tehran reactor that makes isotopes for cancer treatment. On Thursday, Russia said that Iran had not yet given a final "no" to the proposal, while Obama said that "we aren't going to duplicate what happened with North Korea, in which talks just continue forever without any actual resolution to the issue."

Plantagenet

Obama spends a lot of time pretending the recession is over and pretending that sanctions are right around the corner. Back in the real world sanctions aren't going to happen without China, and China has no interest in new sanctions. China is already breaking existing sanctions by selling Iran finished petroleum goods and investing heavily in Iran to buy oil and develop more oil fields.

Iran has proposed keeping its enriched uranium (3.5%) in a sealed container under IAEA supervision, within Iran, while Iran waits for arrival of 20% U-235 for its medical research reactor.

matthewbenzor - - Why do you call the Iranian negotiators "thugs"? What description do you apply to the moron, formerly in the White House, who caused hundreds of thousands of violent deaths in Iraq? Entirely needlessly, too.

maladapted - - The totally unnecessary Iraq War is costing the US taxpayers at least $1 trillion. What is your guess as to the cost of a war with Iran? $2 trillion?
