Italians: Cancel Jersey Shore

At least it’s not Growing Up Gotti? UNICO, a national Italian-American service organization based in New Jersey, has asked MTV to cancel Jersey Shore, its upcoming reality show depicting Italian-American beachgoers that is set to air on December 3. The show bills its subjects as the "hottest, tannest, craziest Guidos" who "keep their hair high, their muscles juiced, and their fists pumping all summer long." UNICO says the show is "trash television" that relies on offensive stereotypes and highlights bad behavior and violence among renters at a Jersey beach house. An MTV spokeswoman said the show continues the channel's history of documenting subcultures and youthful rites of passage, adding that the Italian-American cast "takes pride in their ethnicity."

Why don't the Italians just put a hit out?

All Italians are mobsters... right?

but... its not a stereotype if its members of its own culture they are documenting. A stereotype is a portrayal of a type. These guys are exactly what they are. Maybe UNICO should tell the participants not the production team to cut it out. We would all appreciate it.

I live at the Jersey Shore. Believe me, stereotypes were created for a reason & the summertime is full of them here.

Having spent a few summers down the shore back when I lived in Manhattan, I can only say why limit the cast to Italians? It seems to me every other house on the beach had its resident assholes. Fistfights were common, especially in the evening, and sex on the beach wasn't limited to vodka, peach schnapps, and orange and cranberry juice.

I don't blame them but I think the average East Coaster differentiates between our Italian American brethren and the super-geld blow back, spray tan, fist-pumping, Jaeger Bomb-drinking, wannabe gangster scourge of the Jersey Shore that is the so-called "Guido." This classification is certainly not limited to Italian American progeny, but mainly consists of young men who watched the Sopranos one too many times and thinks himself "hard."

This is pretty funny! I say let it air and the crap will sort itself out. Let's take bets as to how long the cast (males?) will stay out of jail for assault charges once the show gets a few shows under it's belt.

I trained in the USAF with jr. officers from the Italian Air Force. After getting to know them we tried every trick in the ethnic insult trade to get their dander up. Nothing worked. The only response we'd get is something like a mild, friendly, "You son of a beech."

These Italians were proud of their heritage. Try an ethnic insult on one of our "minorities" but not before making sure your funeral insurance is up to date. carleodo@gmail.com

Calling them "Guidos" isn't stereotyping... or offensive?

Would it be if it were about Padre Island and "Tacobenders???"

Or Lake Michigan by Gary, IN and "Coons?"

MTV already has the absolute worst reality shows (and that is saying something!) and apparently aren't above stereotyping in their quest for a new low.

MTV has its audience, right? Those who want to watch can, and the rest can go somewhere else. Fugeddabaudit.
