Judge Refuses 8-Year-Old's Divorce

Amidst Afghanistan’s efforts to legalize marital rape, another disturbing report on women’s rights from the Middle East: A Saudi judge has refused for the second time to annul the marriage of an 8-year-old girl who was wed to her father’s 47-year-old friend in order to settle a debt between the two men (who are “close friends”). The girl’s mother had petitioned for the divorce, but the judge, Sheikh Habib Al-Habib, “insisted that the girl could petition the court for a divorce once she reached puberty.”

Is the 8 year old a slave or chattel...? Except for the fact that oil flows in the region, I would be happy to leave the whole perverted region alone!

A true insight into the mindset of that area of the world. Where are the womens' rights groups? Where are the human rights groups? Nowhere! Unless, of course, they were conservative or republican; then they'd be all over the story.

VinnyB, read the full article. The Women's rights groups and human rights groups are there. Not sure what republicanism has to do with anything but your inability to see beyond american politics.

You're right, lawstudent, I only read the "Cheat Sheet." The full article mentions the Human Rights Commission. Next time before I leave a comment, I will read the FULL article.

When I read news articles like this, I get so angry that I feel like slapping all these men who have bent the interpretations of religious beliefs to fit their own agenda. I think religion should have the basic quality of humanity. If this is your Sharia law, shame on you and your rule makers. There are so many marriages that take place every day that are never reported. In my state in India, there are 850 women for every 1000 men. It is disturbing to imagine how many girls are killed every day, physically or psychologically, to amuse these law makers. It is hard for me to imagine living like so many women do in some parts of the world. They can't leave homes alone, can't go to school, or play sports or marry the person of their choice. I wish this world is a better place for every young boy and girl. I wish......

That has got to be the most chilling non sequitur I've ever read.

Sorry, honey, you're too young to divorce. Come back in a few years.

Ugh!

Very sad and despicable. Yet another example of why religion should have no place in government.
