Kidnapped Girl Reappears After 18 Years
To the extreme relief of her family, Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was kidnapped from her family at age 11 in 1991, has emerged alive. Dugard, now 29, spent the last 18 years in a set of creepy backyard shacks behind the home of her alleged kidnapper, convicted rapist Phillip Garrido, who allegedly forced himself on her and fathered her two daughters, now 11 and 15. Garrido and his wife were arrested for kidnapping and conspiracy, and Phillip is also being held on rape charges. Garrido was caught after bringing Dugard and her children to a parole meeting. Garrido, meanwhile, told Sacramento television station KCRA 3 that people should wait to hear from Dugard because she'll tell "the most powerful heartwarming story." Garrido's brother called him "a fruitcake." The Telegraph reports that in recent years, Garrido became convinced that God was talking to him, inventing a "headphone amplification system" to help him focus the voices in his head, and claiming to be speaking in "the tongues of angels."

WTF?
senorpastry
this is the most ridiculously offensive and insensitive comment I've ever seen on TDB. I hope for your sake you're not serious.

Do the amish use computers ?

I think that was his point.
I think Katherine Jackson is trying to do the same think with MJ's kids. The overexposure related to news could really damage the kids, especially the young ones who appear to have always been in that shack and nowhere else. The reference to a different location where there is a strong spirtiual community is not a bad idea.
I know from my personal experience living in a small town was the best thing for me.
There may be a good chance many people haven't even read the news there. It is amazing how many people here do not read the news.
And the teeth is another good point.
I would guess they will be put some kind of clinic to deal with what happened, then let out, and will have to integrate possibly with the help of some overworked social worker.
Janotec
You claim that in these two states, there is a greater likelihood of other occurrences of kidnapping and raping for 18 year-long durations. Show this data. If you can't, you're guilty of slander.
perrycindy
I have lived in both states and there is no such thing just beyond crazy that is.
roadhunter
Well, until Janotec replied, I was going to say how ridiculous the original comment was, but Jano's takes the cake for stupidity.
exploora
I think his point was these two states might be able to offer some sanctuary and a controlled environment to prevent psychological damage from all the news related to their case, and the shock of what actually happened to them in the shack, and added to that the feelings they will feel when they see how other people live. I am thinking especially of the two girls who have never left the shack. The mother may actually get stared at a lot if she is that recognizable. That might happen for the rest of her life. So if I understand the comment right, that was the idea, to go somewhere where the environment is controlled. And this idea is not far fetched. Katherine Jackson is trying to do something similar. Now MJ's children are going to be enrolled in a school, and if I understand it right, more of a controlled environment than a public school would be. And those three kids will be stared at a lot too.

I think Vermont qualifies too
perrycindy
You know people in KY and West Virginia do have television sets and watch the news to.

Thanks to wendy murphy for chastising/logically refuting the fellow who makes light of sexual offender registry.

Yahoo News has an AP article better than the one in the New York Post.

It's a pathetic/happy day for her. What a sad but beautiful creature she must be, now.
I hope her readjustment is smooth as can possibly be.
seagoat
Who the fuck are you people?
perrycindy
What i wonder is why now? Was this the first chance to get away or had she been so brain washed that she thought these creeps were her home? Makes ya wonder?

I wish our society could allocate more police time and money to identifying and catching sexual predators as soon as possible.
Too often they go on for years, victimizing young boys or girls, and they aren't permanently incarcerated until it's realized they're serial rapists.
Saphes
Personally, I think we should go straight for the castration zone...remove a few personal items of the perpatrator, say from two maybe three dozen offenders, and the sexual assault and rape cases in this nation will drop at such a rate, Fox news wouldn't know which story to report first. and thats saying alot.
drevilo
For the first time I agree with you periscope. There are just too many liberal judges in this country. Those "goody two shoes" judges have the mentality of "Feral pigs." The perdator in this case is reported to have wanted to teach at UC Berkley. I am sure that this "ultra liberal" seat of intelectual despair would have eventually put him on their payroll. All the weird comments made by the teens on TB are uncalled for, and just plain beneath the scope of thee blog pages.
treetracker
Don't blame the judges - they don't write the laws. Go to your legislators - start with your state rep. Get the laws changed so it's strike one and you're out. These guys, unfortunately, seem to be perpetual predators. And that term needs to be well defined by law - one who commits rape, incest, etc. And they should be locked up so they can never do harm again. No possibility of parole.
nortonclybourn
There are already plenty of laws against these offenses. He was finally caught because the justice system was monitoring him. Where he was "reported" to have "wanted to" teach is not particularly relevant, nor is there any basis for believing that any school is in favor of child abuse.
nearenough
If the beast Garrido had submitted to the death penalty in the first place this would never had happened, an innocent person would have been able to lead a normal life. Remember this guy was out, free on parole, for rape and kidnapping. I though kidnapping was a capital crime, but I guess it only a misdemeanor now. Also Charles Manson is always up for parole. I guess he's next.

Public hanging is way too humane. They knew how to do it in the middle ages -- you don't just kill them, you do it slowly and in a humiliating, agonizing way, liking drawing and quartering them. They had an sanitized version at the end of Braveheart. You hang them but don't kill them or allow them to lose consciousness, then stretch them until you dislocate all their limbs and tear their ligaments apart, then you cut off and burn their private parts in front of them, then disembowel them, then finally cut of their head and put it in a public place on a spike. The point is that they not only physically suffer but have to watch themselves be humiliated by the crowd observing their mutilation. Since most psychos like this are also control freaks who have exercised total control over their victims, that total lack of control and being made the object of everyone's ridicule as they are literally "reduced" and caused to scream for mercy is psychologically even worse than the pain.
amanda07070
citivas, you ARE him then. I'm all for killing him and ALL child molesters. But if you long to see someone tortured, you have a tortured mind.
citivas
I think you took me a little too literally...

This horrific kidnapping should open up everyones eyes. We can no longer allow sexual predators to be released in society and not wear some kind of tracking. In this day and age of computers, it must be possible. It has been proven that they cannot change and yet we let them walk freely among our beautiful children.
The face of this beautiful girl is all we need to demand this of from our law enforcement at the highest level.
treetracker
He had a tracking device from what I understand and a parole officer who visited him at his home...he just didn't go in the back yard to see what was going on there.
It's been reported a neighbor told her husband there were children living in the back yard and that "it was not right," and he told her it was "none of her business."
Few people want to get involved and speak up or help someone these days. How sad for our communities. We are no longer neighbors - we are strangers living next door.
djanimaequeen
I agree 100%. I watched a safety video on predators for a self defense class and they interviewed a convicted sex offender who himself said that he cannot be rehabilitated. These people are more than a danger they are a plague infecting the most delicate and important part of our society: our children. It makes me sick that these animals can violate the rights of children but expect to be protected by privacy laws. I say all bets are off. You act like an animal you get tagged and hunted down like one.
hfb1053
The kidnappers needs to be in prison with no possibility of parole and put in genpop. They'll meet their justice there.
citivas
Except the system doesn't work that way. He had already been convicted on multiple counts of rape and kidnapping, one of which was a 50 years to life sentence and still got out after 11 years.
perrycindy
You know lots of us do have televisions and pay attention to the outside world in the state of KY.
sanquiz
Exactly. I live in KY and read this site every day, along with the comments listed here from all over the world. I find this remark by the first poster very insulting.
theBUSHdemocrat
I can't imagine what Jaycee's parents and other family must be going through right now. How agonizing.

This guy is a piece of work:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/6103102/Jayce e-Lee-Dugard-alleged-kidnapper-launches-bizarre-defence.html
But don't you worry. With our liberal stance against sex offenders, this guy will be out in 2 years.
periscope
Sure it's always the "liberals" fault with morons. Maybe if the "conservatives" weren't always cutting taxes so much, there might have been money for the police to pursue this sexual predator menace 18 years ago! He will be charged with kidnapping and rape. I doubt he'll ever see the outside of a prison again.
bobj72
YOU FOLKS ARE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING............. This young woman, Jaycee Lee Dugard has suffered, inhumanly and been exploited sexually since her pre-adolescent years (for 18 years) at the hands of a child predator, maniac AND likely his wife, too. And NOWHERE in your discussion is there a sustained expression of indignation for the acts, compassion, sorrow or hope for the victims and their well-being now and into the future. The topics of your discussions are insensitive and disgusting!
Saphes
The outrage sets the degree of compassion and anger, without question we are all on her side..that goes without saying a word, we all read into that.
Thank you.
