Laura Bush: Remember Burma

It may be the one getting all of the media’s attention, but Iran isn’t the only country with a crackdown. Former first lady Laura Bush takes to the op-ed page of The Washington Post to draw attention to the worsening situation in Burma where, she writes, “In the past 21 months, the number of political prisoners incarcerated by the junta has doubled.” Two Burmese were recently jailed for praying for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, and 3,000 villages have been “forcibly displaced.” She suggests a solution that might not make her husband happy: “The Security Council has already referred the crisis in Darfur to the International Criminal Court. It should do the same for Burma.”

Brava, Mrs. Bush! What's happening in Burma/Myanmar is horrifying and in some cases is even worse than what's going on in Iran. Glad *someone* is paying attention to tyrrany in places where the people don't have commodities that the U.S. wants.

Why did Laura and for that matter Cheney only speak out after they left the office? Why wasn't the first lady more vocal about a lot of issues on the injustice around the world? She chose to remain silent (at least in public) and on the sideline, as a conservative woman are supposed to be, and missed the great opportunities to really do some good. It's nice that she speaks out now, but she no longer has the platform and the media attention afford to a First Lady. It's a shame. It's like, she'd like to help, but NOT.So I don't have great respect for her. As for Cheney, the narcissist, I rest my case.

And why is Michele not speaking out on this issue?

probably because, like her husband, she wants to do it when it will make a difference.

Again Airiq-
Your argument is a distraction
And completely dualistic.
This item has not one thing to do
With Michelle.
Why do you always do that?

Well cited, jo. I would note that she waited until after cyclone Nargus ravaged that country and it was brought to the world's attention that Myanmar has been ruled by an extra-crazy junta of neo-nazis.

Hell,
"the French foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, suggested that the United Nations should invoke its "responsibility to protect" civilians as the basis for a resolution to allow the delivery of international aid even without the junta's permission.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/08/world/asia/08myanmar.html"

If we hadn't been caught up in Iraq, we could have invaded a country that needs invading!
AND IT WAS FRANCE'S IDEA!!!

I like Laura, she's a good 'ol gal with some sense in her head. Of course, she did help prop up her husband enough for him to be elected to office, so...
